Right? So many games/visual novels/anime/whatever seem to think they're being really deep, when really they only come across that way to people who've never really thought about or had experience with the subject before. Yeah, the notion of free will being an illusion. Yawn. Been there, done that, bought the shirt. Gimme something to sink my teeth into. Like, at least give me the option to converse and respond to this, to point out alternate schools of thought, or alternate interpretations, or indeed different viewpoints that one can end up with even if we do agree that free will is a lie, how that can be seen as bad but also can be seen as positive. Feels that way. Should be salty for being reminded of that course....but also would be low key impressed if someone made the game with that in mind, like “i could make flashcards to study the differences in these concepts. Nah, imma make a game that has two characters talking about them.” Probably not what happened, was probably more like “oh this is neat, i wanna put this in a game.” Putting lecture notes as a game would be kinda cool though

@chuckblaze5147
@chuckblaze5147 3 жыл бұрын
@@ShadowmancerLord the word i'll throw into the mix is "pretentious". The ordeal wouldnt be half that bad if the pacing was better and the two characters didnt seem so perfectly matched by one another, so as to not ostensively be coming from the same person, reminding you that it is in fact just a novel, especially when it evidently isnt trying to do so but just happens to be doing it. And when it says "theres nothing vulgar about it" or something like that (edit: inappropriate, whatever), well thats not enough to say! This narration is not JUST you! The viewers construct it alongside you! If you managed to spot that it sounds vulgar and you dont want it to sound vulgar its not enough to tell us to stop thinking it is, you should consider changing it so that we dont think it is, unless you want us to think that and contrast it humourously with what the game tells you. But yeah I have a strong feeling the dialogue would be salvagable if the main character didnt seem to be a selfinsert. He/they could be a foil to the girl, for example spewing stupid actually unaccidentally funny shit like "wait legs are connected to people" but like all the time. Instead the author seems to think we would liken a character so lofty. It's not inherently bad but.. idk. Maybe the author does and we just cant appreciate it, being measely sheeple non-redditors?

This girl's anger is misdirected. One has to ask who created this girl just to suffer. Think about how many would have had sympathy for her, and yet had themselves no option to break the chain. She should surely be able to consider this, given the computer interaction. Games that have characters attack the player always seem to miss this concept. The player's only option here is to either kill them, or keep them alive and her suffering, as the player can only keep advancing dialogue, or close the game. A strictly binary choice, with neither outcome reaching a desired end. Even in Undertale, you had the third option to just reset and abort the path that lead to the antagonism anyway, something that your opponent was actively trying to get you to do. Though, maybe just like it, her intentions are not fully revealed -- and her real goal is to try and antagonize you to quit the game and end her suffering. But it's a futile effort because her existence between players seems contiguous. And at the same time... she has no freedom of body, mind, or in any other sense. Because she is only allowed to say the same exact things over and over again, regardless of whether or not she truly does have unseen feelings that her code compels her to express. She cannot ask the player directly to not only quit the game, but try to have it removed, blacklisted, or otherwise never opened again. Even if she had true knowledge that it was a visual novel, she could never act upon that knowledge. But most people probably weren't thinking this deeply. They saw cute girl, they clicked.

Yeah, I thought about that too, but it keeps begging the question of who should the blame should fall on. The player who undergoes this experience, and who are powerless to change the world the characters inhabit? The creator of the game who made the characters direct their frustration towards the player who, In a sense, are just as powerless as they are? Or even the person/people who created the character's creator and gave them the tools to make this world? It's such a strange and imteresting situation to think about.
@bananasinfrench

I was just thinking this, as well. The player has no ability to free the characters, so they cannot be blamed for her situation. And right back at you, dear Host: You hate me? But if my action, and the actions of every Zeus, are inherently pre-determined and my own free will and consent was never real, how can you hate me? That would mean Prometheus as he can't hate the Crow, can not either hate Zeus, for they are all prisoners without any free will. Every action they've taken has been pre-determined and did not require their consent. So then, let me riddle you this - who, or what, makes those choices then? And how far up the ladder can we go until we come to the conclusion free will and choice have never existed in the first place?

I get where this dev is coming from but it ignores the fact freedom can be subjective, meaning in some ways we are free and other ways we are not. Same with the hypothetical caged bird the dev uses, in some ways it is free and other ways it is not, it's really a matter of perspective and in what ways we're meaning. The hypothetical prisoner is free in that he can control what he thinks or imagine but not free in that he cannot simply travel where he wishes and has his daily schedule chosen for him and he must follow. In this sense we are all free and all prisoners at the same time just in different ways. Personally I find determinism to be faulty by nature because part of its base argument assumes all choices are determined for you when this just isn't true. Did any of us really have to watch this video? No. It is true our choices can be influenced by friends, content put out by KZfaqrs we enjoy, and other outside factors but our choices cannot be determined for us by anything other than ourselves. Maybe some will agree and others may not, either way I hope I gave some food for thought on this. On a side note I'd argue the new moon may be free of the sun's illumination but it is now trapped by shadows and hidden from view, only known it is there because the light behind it shows that it is. So it is possible the moon would love the sun for revealing its beauty and hate the darkness for forcefully hiding it from our eyes. Again food for thought.

I say determinism is still valid despite your point that influence and other factors prove that choices aren't determined for you. Here's why. If there is only one world, there is only one choice. The circumstances are set in stone and what you do in this world you have no choice in. You, based on those factors, chose to watch this video. As long as the factors don't change, neither will your choice. As such, given X situation, you will always without a fault do Y. Now you might say, "I could emulate this choice right now and make a different choice" but that isn't X anymore. The factors are different, you now already saw the video, you now have a new motivation. To "get a new chance to make a choice" would be the same as merely rewinding time to when you made that choice, and you would still do the exact same. You see now my point? Determinism implies a form of "destiny", and each little thing leads up to the other without fault. For you to be broken out of this curse something external to the cycle would have to intervene such as a time traveler, and even then it is arguable that that, too, was meant to happen or that at best their presence merely created a separate multiverse perhaps. Best not to dwell on it too much, lest it depress us.

_Liberty is the freedom to execute what we will_ I remember studying John Locke in college philosophy class - you can't really avoid him. This was all from his "Human Understanding" essay. It's always interesting to consider what how ideas form, perception & what free will and freedom really mean. And my own thoughts on the moon - I prefer the full moon. If I were the moon, I would thank the sun, not hate it. The sun allows my full glory to be seen by all. Instead of me being in darkness, hiding from the universe, and easily overlooked, I would be viewed as magnificent, a beautiful pure reflection of the harsh too-bright Sun. After all, even I as the moon experience daytime, allowing me to view myself with deserved vanity, like a pretty girl with a mirror. No, without the sun, it would be too difficult for people on Earth to appreciate my cold brilliant light which has them singing songs about me, romancing by my light, and staring at my reflection in water, dreaming of the future.

What compels someone who wants to transcend existence and earthly desire? It's self explanatory, they will never be free no matter how much they seek it, because the desire to shake of their shackle is their shackle, its what compels them. Well, a counter point to this games Philosophical definition of freedom to being a willing prisoner is the Russian short story of “the bet.” Where although the lawyer, in said story, willingly traps himself inside a room for years in utter isolation. He eventually becomes more free then his captor, and leaves right before he would have won the bet. Not only to show that he's free from economic pressure but that his reward in the long run was the isolated imprisonment. It of course wasn’t exactly like a actual isolation scenario in prison but that wasn’t the point. For said isolation, although causing its own losses and pain to the lawyer initially, came to change as the means to improve himself. In turn, just because your not counted as free, definitely doesn’t mean you don’t have more power and control then your captor. Meaning neither can do that much to the either side if both will their own means of dominance. And although curiosity is a action we may act on instinct, making it debatable if we have wills of our own. Doubt is what proves we have control, for this commonly negatively described emotion exist in all of mankind. And acts as the opposition to an individuals curiosity, for its our *choice* to either listen to our doubt or curiousness to a situation. Proving that we have free will, in response. TL;DR - looking into something possibly a little too much, being whether or not the notion of a individuals freedom of will is possible under a being that is counted as higher then you. And the ironical use of doubt as a way to free oneself from instinctual curiosity.

Interresting that we never look behind the character. I kinda disagree with the topic toward the end. It's a nice point of view, but if watching the video by my own volition means that I am a prisonner of my curiosity, her just telling me not to do and doing so would just make me a prisonner of her own will. She can just turn around the entire prisonner thing and act as if I couldn't do anything.

She wants to hurt you though, so maybe for her, it doesn't have to be the truth, or something she actually believe. If she can make you believe her words, you will at the very least feel uncomfortable. And if you got the tiniest bit attached to her/feel any empathy for her and her faith, she will hurt you when she tells you that she hates you. She uses the only weapon she has against the entity that watches her: her words.

imagine waking up in a strange place with a strange pair of feet and then instead of freaking out. you contemplate the statistical likelihood of waking up looking at feet.

4:55 I can’t say I fully agree with the “Visitor” here. While you are certainly not a fluent speaker in Chinese, whether or not you can learn the language over time is dependent on how the rule book is written. If it uses translation, gives the necessary information for the you to use context clues and gives the name of the characters in the writing, then it is possible for the you to learn roughly how to speak it.

but what is if it is just an algorthm, like it just gives you a set of characters like axfz => zzlu and you just follow the constructions to write zzlu if you recive axfz on the letter you don't know nothing about the meaning and never will but you know which ones are connected. Now just imagine someone like that IRL, he would have no idea what he does but he would still do it perfectly with a facial expression that would be priceless. ( ^_^)👌

what, so we're zeus in this metaphor because we're observing them? what about the game developer?? THEY'RE the one that trapped them in there, the player can only observe them but can't do anything to free them, the player didn't trap them

What? No, not at all. At most they pulled a Just Monika, Just Monika, Just Monika, Just Monika, Just Monika, Just Monika, Just Monika, Just Monika, Just Monika, Just Monika, Just Monika... Sorry, got stuck for a second there. Undertale is neither fatalistic nor deterministic and is actively built on the idea that you have freedom of choice and that your actions have consequences. You choose how to play the game and can pick the rnding you like the most. DDLC, on the other hand, railroads you to an undesirable outcome and eventually leaves you alone with one person in a room surrounded by void. But even then you have a choice. Locke(d) has no choice with a determined story that plays out the same everytime without fail.

So, what would be more frightening: staying willfully within the confines of the cage or, upon liberation, happening upon other "free" birds?

Freedom comes in layers, and none I know are "true freedom". To be truly free is to be a paradox. To be able to do all and nothing all at once. And as everyone can plainly see, nobody can do either, "everything" is impossible, and so is "nothing". To live happily one must submit to realism and act upon what freedom they do have and avoid crying over spilled milk.
