In various cultures throughout different time periods the son has been seen as the important one, either because women weren't allowed to do anything anyways, or because a son was the only one that could carry on the family name since the female would take on the husbands name (and in some cultures, their family) and if one had only daughters this was seen as the end of your family line. This is why when China had a law about how many children you could legally have without paying an extra fee, a lot of baby girls were either killed or left to die on the roadside or given to orphanages with the family hoping they could have a son and carry on the family bloodline and surname. Within the western world, girls were seen as expensive as the family had to pay for the dowry if they wanted their daughter to have a good match, and would often have to pay for the entire wedding. This specific tradition is often seen carried on even in this day and age when the brides father traditionally pays for everything, although more recently the groom and grooms family have started stepping in and helping pay also. Until women started working/voting/etc in the eyes of the world they were often seen as little more than young housewives good for nothing more than doing first a father then a husbands bidding and keeping a happy home. The story isn't the greatest I will admit, but it has some merits and you can't just say a father scorning their daughter when there wife and only son just died is poor writing. There's a reason this and other tropes are often used tropes after all.

The original stories are horror.

99% of the time the original version of the childhood story was full of horrific details that modern companies decided to greatly tone down to turn it into a story or movie. For instance, I had a book of Scottish stories for children, and in one, the mother ate ALL the stew she was cooking, so asked her son to come over to she could brush his hair. And it literally said “And she brushed his hair, then slew him.” As if it was so commonplace and ordinary it needed no further detail, and the rest of the story was convincing her husband they were NOT cannibalising their son despite the fact he was like “Is this our Johnny’s finger?” And many more stories that were even worse.

@@MalachiLper my favorite one is The Pied Piper because it's both needlessly dark and somewhat based on a true story, the story is very simple, a man comes along and exorcises some rat demons from a town in exchange for money, when the time came to get his payment, the townspeople basically cheaped out on him and told him to fuck off, so in response, he kidnaps all their children, oh, and I forgot to mention, the Piper exorcised the rats by leading all of them into a river drowning them, and it’s heavily implied that the children got the same courtesy as the rodents, but that isn't the craziest part, the craziest part of all this is, it's actually an event that happened at some point in time, during the 16-1800s, more than a dozen or so children from a village just… vanished.
