Manual Engine Start.
welcome back everybody, thank you for all being here and here’s a quick little informational piece on why we do a manual engine start. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that the 3/8 Drive extension when inserted has to be turned in order to manually open the starter valve. The other thing I failed to mention is that, even though the component is on MEL, it will be scheduled to be changed in the coming days. This is due to time on the ground as well as parts allocation, but I tell you wholeheartedly This is not a safety a flight issue. it’s just something maintenance has to do to get the engine running. much like utilizing a ground air cart to start the engine when the APU is inoperative.
And yes that’s totally the HOW ITS MADE soundtrack 😂 all credits to them on the music behind this. I LOVE that show. Probably my favorite 😆
hope you guys enjoy the video, thank you for watching. Have a beautiful day. 🤙

This is not a manual ignition starter. This is the valve which allows bleed air to start the rotation of the turbine. In normal circumstances it's operated from the cockpit.

Can't start without some source of air. That comes from the Aux Pwr Unit in the tail, the other engine or a ground cart. They won't 'crank over' on their own!

It depends on the aircraft and it's age, but the only manual part of starting a modern aircraft is usually just selecting which engine then selecting start assuming the APU is already running. The rest is automatic until the start sequence completes usually once the engine has reached self-sustaining rpm. The engine then accelerates and settles at idle rpm.

In several of your later video's, you've talked about the time you had to do a manual engine start. And ever since I learned how different the starters work on these big engines vs a car, mainly cause your using air instead of electricity to crank over a starter motor. I'm sure the amount of air from the APU must be pretty high to get the starter to crank over the engine. But I am so happy to finally see you stand next to the engine to open the valve manually to allow the engine to start, so freaking cool! I'm guessing the obvious maintenance task is to replace the valve mechanism so it can be used on auto once again.
@StigAviation

It’s actually not that much air, usually 40 to 45 psi to get the starter Turning, it’s the gearbox that does the heavy lifting and starts turning these beautiful engines.

When I was a B-52H crew chief and we had an uncooperative starter control valve we would open the access panel on the engine cowling that allowed us to install a cartridge breech cap for when we did a cartridge start and tap on the starter control valve with a ball peen hammer to get the valve to unstick and open to allow air to the starter. We referred to this as a vibrosonic adjustment of the SCV. We didn't have an APU on the BUFFs so we had to use an external air source like a -60 or a MA/1A.

Performing leading edge de-icing functionality on Citation Ultras. While the crew chief had the jet set at cruise power in the 'compass rose' I had to slide my hands along the wing and engine inlets to see if they were getting warm. The engine inlet check was fun. I would hook one thigh under the trailing edge; hold onto to it with one hand; then slide my other up the side of the cowl until I reached the inlet. Yes no loose items or rings on my hands or jacket/shirt pockets. Jacket zipped up tight if it was cold outside. One time my hand came around the inlet a little too far and I felt suction 'pull' the hand ever so slightly. Yeah, that's right. You don't have to touch the very leading edge of the inlet. The most dangerous thing about the check is crossing under the tail under one engine and hitting your head on the other. Luckily, I would wear a used flight deck crewman's 'cranial' that I bought at a surplus store for exterior checks. At first the other seasoned techs thought I was a geek. However I did start a trend at the service center when former carrier crew members would bring in theirs to wear. Great channel! Thanks for the education.

Most people underestimate the power of the engine. It looks so innocent and harmless, think ohh it’s not sucking that much, right until you get in that specific zone. That hand pull you felt I have felt as well. I call it the death pull. It will snap you into reality really quickly. You’ll respect the engine after that feeling.

Back in the day, we used to do Air Starts on 737-200, 727, MD80’s among other aircraft. We were ramp workers and didn’t need mechanics to do this. In addition to that there are batteries that can supply DC power for at least 30 minutes. It’s really fun doing a manual start on a TF-33 engine, the start valve for that is in the pylon so you’ve got to position a ladder where the low bypass air flows right into you. It’s really exciting when the valve doesn’t close and you have to close it manually. It was always hit or miss, valve wouldn’t open but it would close, valve would open but not close…… and sometimes, it wouldn’t do either 😂

We used to do run ups on 747’s while standing in front of the nose wheels for trim runs. The nose wheels would come two feet off the ground with all 4 engines at part power.

Can you explain the howl noise the engines make when they go over my house during its descent/landing run? my guess would be a compressor but idk.

HA!!!! You mean the one like blowing air over the hole of a bottle! (grin) I kept telling my wife what the hell is that sound. Her response, what sound? Women! Then one time a low flyer really let one out and she said what the hell was that. (sigh) People think I'm nuts then the community board starting getting post about strange noise at night. Blame the Airbus and a hole under the wing that whistles just like the hole on a bottle. It's used to equalize the pressure in the fuel tanks under the wing. The dam irony is this was installed to make air flow over the wings quieter as not to disturb neighborhoods when landing. You can't make this crap up.

So what happens when the energize fails mid flight and the starter valve is malfunctioning? Guess it doesn’t need to be on the MEL after all.

mid flight the engines are still spinning due to the oncoming wind the engines can be restarted in flight

Ok how do you understand when the engine does not need the starter any more , Does the pilot signal somebody in front of the aircraft and then repeated to you standing by the engine?
