The Gyroangle is the line of sight once you have all the calculations done, so when you put it to zero that is when you release the fish as it passes on you periscope. In this case it could have been released when it passed 1/3 of the ship and another one 2/3. Btw, periscope not locked just zeroed to gyro, you were very lucky that hit on the bow, tbh, and that was due to your very close proximity. On your two torpedoes, you launched before gyro to zero and that is why the impact went too far forward, at double the distance you would most definitely miss the target. It is very cumbersome and risky to modify speed in TDC whilst target locked on periscope. You should not lead the enemy ship, instead you make them cross your line of sight.

justlaugh87 there's nothing wrong with sharing knowledge and having a discussion. After all there were indeed mistakes in this tutorial and he pointed them out. The uploader is way cooler than you to pin this msg to let the viewers know what could have been done better.

Am I the only one to see there were 4 minutes elapsed and not 5? Anyway, it would be nice to see the actual procedure written or explained clearly somewhere, Lord of Thunder's comments are a bit murky, and after that I'm not sure what I can trust in the video either. Some parts are obvious, but how the TDC should be handled is definitely not entirely clear.
@matthewwagner40425 жыл бұрын
Lord of Thunder pretty much has no idea what he's talking about... The gyro angle is he angle the torpedo needs to turn in order to hit the ship. The gyro DOES NOT have to be at 0!!!!! If the gyro is lets say 10 degrees the gyro in the torpedo will cause the torpedo to turn the 10 degrees to intercept the ship. When the gyro angle is at ZERO that just means the torpedo doesn't have to turn and will just run straight and go directly forward, not performing a turn. Torpedoes turn just fine, but due to the position of the ship and geometry being what it is... firing at a 90 degree angle on the ship with the torpedo heading directly perpendicular to the target ship means mistakes in the solution are minimized at that position. Also impacting at 90 degrees reduces the chance of a deflection. I could make a video explaining that if you want. If your submarine is not in a perpendicular angle to the ship then you are not going to want to shoot when the gyro angle is at 0, but instead at the angle in which the torpedo will arrive at a 90 degree angle to the ship. You also don't need to lock your scope onto the ship when firing. It is typically a good idea if your firing a single torpedo though. If your torpedo solution is "Correct" then the torpedo should strike the ship where the vertical line, of the crosshairs, is on the ship. Since it's locked on the center it should hit the center. You can unlock and do a manual spread of the torpedoes... aiming one at the center and maybe one more towards the front and one more towards the rear of the ship. It depends on how much you trust your solution and if you want to do a spread or not. You can do spreads automatically in the torpedo computer as well instead of doing a manual spread. Spreads are used because computing a solution is complicated and prone to human error. Getting it exactly right is difficult and gets better with experience. It's not risky to change the speed in the TDC while locked on with your periscope as stated above. The TDC is designed to take input and all you're doing it changing inputs to get a proper firing solution which is what the TDC is calculating. You should put your torpedoes on the fastest speed that has the range to get to your target. If the target is close you want them going FAST as that reduces errors in your solution and can turn a miss into a hit. Steam torpedoes allow for various speeds, but they produce bubble trails that are a give away to the ship that a torpedo is coming. If they see the trial they will perform evasive maneuvers to avoid the torpedo if possible. So typically in daylight, like in the video, you fire electric torpedoes as not to give away your shot especially distant shots. If it's a close shot and they won't have time to react a steam torpedo in the daylight can be fine. Electric torpedoes are slower and therefore more sensitive to errors in your solution though... they're harder to hit with because they're slower. So you have to decide what you're going to do based on the scenario. I, for that reason usually have steam torpedoes in tubes 1 and 3 and electric torpedoes in tubes 2 and 4. Here is a video I made explaining why to choose fast torpedoes. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p95za9OG16yRhXk.html

A little thing about the angles to avoid confusion. From 0 to 180 the bearing is the actual angle, from 180 to 360 the angle is 360 minus the bearing...as you did ;)

Hello Hawaiian_Hero :) I finally managed to mod the steam version of SH5, but I have one question, how come everything is the same for me but the tool helper when you draw lines is slightly different? As in a bit smaller and with different degree markings?

hey guys, i've got a question regarding the campaign and promotion points. i started the first campaign and requested the eastern costal waters mission. i finished it and got some promotion points for that. than i requested the mission on the west. i delivered the spy and shoot some ships two. i finished my patrol but didnt get any points for that. im doing the weserübung right now. after i reconed one of the ports the small symbol on ther upper left of the screen, that showed wich mission you requested disappeard. im afraid i wont get any points for this mission too, although i shoot some ships at narwick. what am i doing wrong? is it needed to request the missions or could i just fo them without requesting? will i get any points for that? i know there is a way to "cheat" those points, but i wanna work it out. would be very thankfull for your help!

Easy way to determine angle on bow (AOB) is to imagine you are standing on the bridge of the enemy ship, now imagine the submarine surfaced where it currently is, now determine where would you see that submarine from your perspective on the bridge of the ship and that is your AOB, put that image into the AOB calculator and you should be good. 2nd method draw course line from target ship directly ahead, then draw line from bow of target ship to submarine position, measure this angle and determine whether the sub is to port(red) or starboard (green)of the target ship, this is your angle on the bow (AOB) which can then be put into AOB calculator.

People who need this level of explanation shouldn't be playing a sub sim. They've got something wrong in the wiring in their heads, and should be on land at all times where they're safe in times of war. :P
@schmitty54617 жыл бұрын
wow nice to see somebody who is receptive to new players...Everyone needs to start some where, Otto Kretschmer wasn't born with knowing what AOB is. This is a very niche type of game/sim and it could use new players. As for anyone that reads that comment, ignore people like this and don't give up It can be very challenging at times and you'll miss allot just keep watching videos like this and real the manuals and eventually it will click like it did for me.

Nice tutorial - hope to get SH5 very soon used to play SH3). One question, when you were plotting on the chart, it seemed to jump around quite a bit, is there a way to center the chart on your location? Like you, I enjoy the math and plotting - sure I will be pausing a lot at the the beginning.

So, the Target Bearing is the Relative Bearing with 0 degrees on the bow, not the Compass Bearing with Magnetic North as 0 degrees ? It is obvious when you are using the TDC/Scope itself as zero will always be on the bow when you look around and the bearing through the TDC/Scopes IS the one displayed but when you are watching a video or perhaps when marking the map in game, it is easy to forget and get confused.
@cyphi4745 жыл бұрын
Why you dont use graphs on right to get speed? Start line at 5 minutes, let it pass 1600 in middle and you get target speed on leftmost column. Its faster than conversion table.

How are you supposed to know when to launch the torpedo? You have to take into account the velocity of the torpedo in order to know when and where the torpedo will intercept the ship
@spacepanda6927 жыл бұрын
Gran Torino this is why you pass all the data to tdc. it will manage the angle of attack of the torp, so that it will intercept the target on the given time
@johngalt9697 жыл бұрын
Precisely. This guy doesn't know what the fuck he's doing. He's trying to calculate a firing solution 'manually' whilst using keyboard shortcuts and using the TDC to calculate the firing solution in the end anyway. If you want to learn how to calculate a real firing solution there's some great WWII tutorials out there used by the Royal Navy that give you a break down of the math. It's not a useful skill in 2017, but it's damn fun!
@schmitty54617 жыл бұрын
This is basically how it is done, some people do it differently, if I am not mistaken there is one way where you just need aob and speed then use the attack disc and enter it to the TDC. The "Torpedorichtungsweiseranlage" as its know was not a "computer" as such more a calculator....It doesn't know the speed, AOB and range of the enemy ship and torpedo speed, you have to tell it that, but before you do that you have to find out what these variables are.....and how do you find theses variables...one way is with trigonometry like this video. www.tvre.org/en/acquiring-torpedo-firing-data Please enlighten us how your suppose to use the TDC without this info then? As for the original comment, simple you tell the TDC what speed the torpedo is going to be traveling at,its pre set here and there are only 2 setting for speed you just select which one.

an actual tutorial that doesn't explain WHY he is doing such things and doesn't really know how the system works. you are just explaning how to shoot STRAIGHT FORWARD in front of you and yet you completely missed the speed reading (almost missed the first torpedo indeed) you are doing a tutorial and you don't even know that torpedos can turn and that's what AOB is meant for? I'm confused about what "tutorial" should mean to you...
