Fun fact: Because Trinidad and Tobago were a) Bottom of the qualification group, b) On a 6-game losing streak and had a goal differential of -13, and c) Already eliminated from world cup qualification, most of their main players were benched for this game and replaced with young, inexperienced rookies. Meaning not only did the US lose against Trinidad and Tobago, they somehow managed to lose a crucial match against Trinidad and Tobago's B Team. Since this comment has become so popular, here's an extra fun fact: Trinidad and Tobago lost a qualification playoff to the US in 1990, giving America the World Cup's last CONCACAF qualification spot at the expense of Trinidad and Tobago. Alvin Jones' dad was on the losing Trinidadian side, which is why he saw this match as personal revenge.

Im Costa Rican, and i remember that at the time of the last match of the hex, we all wanted panama to beat us so they could advance into their first ever WC (as the relationship between Costa Rica and Panama is very friendly) we were in absolute disbelief when we scored and were actually playing to win, as we were somehow winning with a “B” team against Panama’s best ever squad, when Panama scored their second goal at the 88th minute we celebrated that goal as much as we celebrated any goal in a World Cup ever, we didn’t even realize the US had somehow managed to lose to Trinidad until the next morning.

@@Maqwell Oh don't worry we both agree that there's absolutely no way of happening in regards to the MLS, but I do feel like some sort of implementation of it in USL and/or NISA well at least carry the slack for the development aspect. 🤷‍♀️ I just wish playing for a small club in the US could matter more instead of moving to Wales or something. Even if it's in a weird way like having pro-rel be on and off for certain years

Lmaooooo imagine blaming the US failing to qualify on MLS not having Pro/Rel.
@LordHeadcheez
@LordHeadcheez 2 жыл бұрын
@@Tommicus I think Pro/Rel would work if it's all within MLS. Instead of an East/West conference, have a top and bottom conference. Last three in the top go down, top three in the bottom go up. It's not a perfect solution, but it's a start! That said, though, it's ridiculous to say that the lack of Pro/rel was the cause of this. The completely broken Pay-to-Play youth system in the USA was far more of a factor. Thankfully, that's (Very slowly) changing with increased MLS Scouts.

As someone from the UK what the US team needs is a new manager. Pulisic has literally been through this process and won a UCL for it. Being able to take a different approach whether it be Tuchel-like passive defense into quick counter attack style or Guardiola-esque tikitaka build up play would be really helpful to the aforementioned mentality that the idiot of a former coach waffled about.

sorry I'm only responding to this: tbh Gregg digs his own grave. He has so many options yet plays Lletget and Arriola. I get squad rotation and all but you can't just make 7 changes and disrupt the chemistry away at Panama. I wanna see what happens this next international window and I'll get a better idea cos idk what to think atm. Also dear god he needs to utilize Pulisic better.

Incredible video, god it’s terrible memories seeing how bad of a 6 Michael Bradley was lmao. His form dropped so much when he went back to MLS. I didn’t remember how bad the selection was by Bruce Arena turning it into a MLS showcase. At the time of the Trinidad match there was an in form Jonathan Gonzalez who switched to Mex and Weston Mckennie who weren’t picked. I remember an early Altidore miss vs Trinidad that was huge. There was also no rotation from the previous match. We played a 41212 I think it was and easily could’ve taken off Altidore for Dempsey or something. Even with the selection there was no excuse considering we were playing a team of USL and local Trinidadian players though lol.

The humiliation that followed after the Klinsmann sacking was the greatest thing to ever happen to US soccer. The arrogance of MLS and college soccer, the entitlement of the us athletes, growing up in the pay for play system which fostered the suburban soccer mom orange slices image of soccer, and the old culture/american way of doing things all died in one night on that pitch in Trinidad & Tobago. And from those ashes, something special is brewing.

Bruce Arena, how can anyone consider him qualified to even coach a pro club? He got a joke job at DC United and was handed a roster a toddler couldn't lose with. That somehow made him qualified to coach the NT? He had one chance before, and scored zero points. How was he even considered on an interim basis, if he was all we had, staying with Klinsmann was better.

I do think the USMNT needed this to become better in the future. I mean look at England. They needed the lowest moment against Iceland in 2016 to then develop out of that arrogant mindset. It took getting rid of a lot of older experienced talent like Rooney Hart and Cahill, so the USMNT prove their worth.

Exactly, as an Englishman I respect the hell out of the US national team because we have very similar paths. We use our shortcomings as fuel to improve and now we have one of our best squads and a real chance of winning the World Cup. The US are also having their very own golden generation in the making right now. (All bets are off when we face each other though lol)
