Why isn't My Headset Mic Working & How do I Fix it? - Windows & Software Settings

Having trouble getting your headset mic working on your PC? Between hardware and software there is a lot of different things that could be causing the problem but in my experience the main reason microphones won't work is due to some simple Windows software settings that need to be properly configured. In this video I go over the most common settings and show you how to properly configure them. Usually you just need to adjust a few things in the Sounds settings in Windows Control Panel or in the Realtek HD Audio Manager (aka Realtek Audio Console) to get your mic working. Sometimes you'll need to grant permission in the Windows Privacy settings or simply switch the input device and output device settings in your games or other applications. I'll walk you through all of these in this video and with any luck one of these tips will get your headset mic working so you can game, stream and voice chat to you hearts content. Cheers! :)

@@Will-fs7oz When to the dell website. went to my device. Installed the audio drivers from there. AND MOST IMPORTANT downloaded the wavesmaxxaudio from the downloads list there. and when I got it working and plugged in the headphones, you can pick headset and the mic will work

I find it extremely unpractical that Windows 10 (and other versions of Windows BTW) make it so difficult to fix a microphone sound. All possible sound settings related to a microphone in Windows should be placed at ONE and only ONE single central place inside the control panel. And in there, there should also be a button that says "reset microphone to default settings" that works. We really don't care of all possible settings: all we want is that it works, that's it. Also there should be another separate tab for headphone & speaker with all possible settings, and the settings must be on that page, not some kinds of links that bring us to another page.

I have an A10 gen 2 headset that works fine on my console but I just resent li built a pc and when I use the splitter cable it works. When I try using my microphone on the headset I literally have to shove my mic in my mouth to register it and my friends say it’s low . If anyone can help thank you

ive tried every method in the video and even tried uninstalling the realtek audio driver (which didn't work even after restarting my pc) and my mic still wont work. ive tried every aux port on my motherboard and case as well as a usb connection and even reset my cmos and updated by bios but it still wont work. The settings read the mic as being plugged in but either no input is received, static is blasted at full volume, or the mic receives the output signal coming through the headphones. I've used multiple mics and still no luck. Tried opening the realtek audio control but when the application opens it doesn't load. if you can find the time to help me out i would really appreciate it, thanks.

Hey Maraksot! I learned a lot from your watching your video. However, the problem that prompted me to go down this rabbit hole of "how to fix headset" videos, still persists. My beats solo2 headphones are not being recognized my laptop (new acer nitro.) The prompt comes up asking if its "mic in, line out, headset-phones," etc... And the audio will come in if i select headset. But my laptop seemingly doesn't recognize the beats otherwise, they cannot be found under sound device settings, through the control panel, or anywhere. I know they work just fine, testing them on other devices, and audio coming through via the pc. But it's as if my laptop dislikes beats, cause it's telling me there is nothing plugged in the 3.5 input, while jamming my tunes through the very beats plugged in em. Are these heaphones just incompatible or is there a trick you maybe could share? I'd like to use these as a microphone, and my investigating has been fruit less. Any help would be majorly appreciated. Thank you.

So I have that double connector thing and my headset is called Crusher Wireless Headset. I lost the cords that came with the box but I recently bought the double connectors hoping I would be able to listen to my mic. So far my mic isn't working as intended and my discord is on Input Microphone Realtek R audio and my output is Speakers/Headphones Realtek R. I don't see my headset settings on there at all. So when I want to enter a call I can hear the person but the person cannot hear me. Can someone help? :(

Ok, my computer is detecting my headset "HyperX Cloud 2".. The computer is telling me that they are working correctly but I am not getting any sound out of them. Went over ALL these basic steps even with uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. Still not working. They are not muted by the way. I've tried everything and nothing works! I got the audio adapter, have tinkered with all of the settings, and have admittedly been struggling to update my drivers but idk if that's the problem. I hear audio just fine but my mic won't work, it works on my phone but not my pc, and the weirdest thing is I can hear an echo through my mic and whenever I plug the audio output into the input I can see my mic working, problem being now I can't hear anything.

Ive had a problem with my audio for 5 months, the problem was that my headset did not connect its microphone to the computer. I resolved this problem by reinstalling realtek drivers, and checking the realtek audio console. Aamazing Video!

SO, I Had a Echo problem on windows 10x/11 and I went to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, and Manage Audio Devices. It opens a Sound tab, Then click recording, then disable the same thing that you are using , for example I was using normally Realtek Speakers for Audio Output and Recording and expirienced echo. Then disable and done Thats all LOL. I AM SO DUMB :p

Man I know you get a lot of comments like this but for real, massive thank you to you! Ive had this problem where audio would come in through my headset but my voice was being picked up by the built-in webcam mic (which is terrible) I never get the popup asking for headphones/headset, and it seems to have been on headphones by default. Turns out I could just open the advanced settings in the Realtek console and switch it to headset :facepalm: Many hours I have spent trying to fix it, and your video finally did it. Thanks so much!

ive ran into a problem where if i connect the audio output side of the adapter it works, but when i connect the mic side of it it ends up saying that the headset output is unplugged.. and sometimes its the other way around, do i need to buy a new adapter or is it my pc?

I’ve checked everything my headset sounds fine on my phone and ps4 but for my pc i have to cup my hand around the mic to be audible just ending up with the quality sounding awful what do i do. when i go in control panel i saw that the headset i use which is the blaupunkt bh41 is shown as disconnected. i use a random aux cable i found in my house to connect the headset to my laptop and now it is showing it as if its disconnected. please help cuz i wanna play games with my friends in voice chat and i have to use another app called iruin webcam and use my phone as my mic which i dont want to do

My mic is honestly confusing me really bad it's showing up in my headphones and I can hear audio out of it but when I try and set it to my mic it doesn't show it as an available option. When I went to the window's control panel it popped up but said it wasn't plugged in even though it was. It has a 3.5 mm audio jack and a usb cord but that is only used to have the lights on the headset light up. It was working perfectly fine a few months ago but hasn't been allowing my headset mic to connect since. I'm not sure what is wrong or going on with it.

thank you, this helped me solved my mic problem. think a windows update got me as i had the same problem i checked everything but the one that allows apps to use the mic check box xD thanks for pointing me in the direction

I have try plugging in both mics I've done everything you did and not even the settings app can hear me I have tried different mics and everything and it never works so could you help me out.

Thanks! The Realtek audio console helped me, it randomly muted the mic when it had never done that before. Excellent video.

Oh man, do I feel stupid. RealTek Console had my headset muted, thus making everything else like Discord not recognize my mic, however I could hear anyone speaking, even music. I tried everything and was ready to return it, lol. Thank you for posting this video, seriously, no other articles I read mentioned the Manager.

i have a basic wired earphones and have plugged it into my front panel pink jack. the earphones have a mic and i want to use earphones as both mic and output. how to do this?

I have a pair of Philips bluetooth headset that changes the sound quality, a lot, as soon as the mic is connected in the settings. so a game might sound great without mic, but as soon as i enable the mic, the sound quality is crap. its like it switches mode. and its only if I disconnect the mic in windows settings, that the sound quality goes back up... i don't know how to solve it. there's no software support for the headphones. so im left with windows settings that does not fix it...I don't know what to do. any help/succestions?

same! I plug my headset and the windows pop up ask me what I have plugged, i select mic in and headphones but the audio that is recorded is the same audio coming out of my headpgones
