Why Doesn't My Headset Mic Work & How to Fix it (3.5mm audio cable)

So the microphone on your 3.5mm wired headset isn't working when you plug it into your computers headphone jack? The sound comes through the headphones just fine but your mic isn't being recognized? Thankfully there's a very simple solution to this problem. What many people do not know is there are several different types of 3.5mm audio connectors. In this video I show you how to recognize the difference between a 4 pin TRRS connector and a 3 pin TRS connector, explain what the difference between the two of them is and of course show you what you need in order to get your headset mic working on your PC. Alrighty then, let's dive on in!

@@kehv9373Carefully clean out the splitter with a q-1tip for a minute or two.

If this doesn't work, then rearrange the the two outputs of the splitters to different slots. I'm sure you've tried this already, so try to constantly change the ring alignment every several seconds with the connector and the splitter by pulling it out slightly and pushing it back in.

This has helped me diagnose a 2 year long fight with my microphone. My issue was that I was using an extension so my headset could reach without giving me restrictions on head movement. What I didn't know was that my extension was a 3 pin, not a 4 pin. I even bought, unknowingly, a 4 pin to 3 pin splitter because I have a 4 pin headset jack and a 3 pin mic jack. The extension worked for audio. I now know all I need is a new extension that's a 4 pin. Thank you!

Can someone please please help me? I have the Arctis 7. Using it on PS4 Pro & it uses USB on the dongle... The microphone will not work, but when I go to the settings menu for the mic. test, then I can hear it but as soon as I exit the menu I can no longer use or hear the microphone. ANYONE HEEELLLPPP😢😢

Thank you SO much!!!!! I bought a good microphone a few months ago after years of hesitating, and I was so disappointed that my computer thought it was headphones. I've been on so many forums where people advised to update the drivers but didn't get that the problem was the microphone being detected as a headphone. I found your video when I thought I'd give up and you explained it so well!! It makes a lot of sense now, I just bought a a TRS to TRRS converter, hopefully it will work now! I've learnt a lot and fixed a very annoying problem thanks to you, keep up the amazing work! :)

Thanks for this video! I had a splitter and the mic not working was driving me nuts and it wasn't quite this problem, but you explaining the 4 and 3 pin difference helped me figure it out. The extension cable I was using to give me more room to use my headset turned out to be only 3 pins. I'll be more careful buying a replacement!

This was my problem too, so glad I saw your comment! My headset mic works when plugged directly into the splitter that came with it which must convert 4 pin to 3 pin, but my extension cable is only 3 pin so the mic doesn't work when I use it. So glad I finally got this figured out!

Had a feeling that's what my problem was, built my first pc so I've been trying to learn things and fix stuff. Microphone audio wasn't working but noticed the case had 2 separate ports so this fixed my issue straight away, thankfully had a splitter years ago that works fine. Massive thanks!

I believe this video had the answers I was desperately looking for! Thank you for spreading this nice information, as now my new headset will be working. My issue came as this pc is an all in one, always had troubles with the microphone thing up until now, where I discovered that I just needed a jack adapter to split it so that the microphone could be detected. Always thought that my pc was just garbage, my headsets were all faulty, or that simply I wasn't smart enough to solve this small issue. Thanks again!

I'm so glad this actually worked I've been looking for a solution all day and found this video. I was watching this video and realized that I saw this type of converter when I was testing different mics, so I was relieved I didn't need to go buy one. Also, if you don't know where to plug it in try looking at the back of your pc (the 3.5mm ports were color coded for me).

To help whoever is in a similar situation to mine, I have an headset without mic which can only be used to listen to sound, so I bought a lapel mic to help with input and an audio splitter because my laptop only has one port. When I connected both to my laptop through the audio splitter, the headset worked fine but the mic wasn't working despite all my effort. Thanks to this video, I figured out that the headset has a TRS cable and the mic has a TRRS cable, while the audio splitter is a TRS to TRRS connector, that's why my headset was working but the mic wasn't, so I needed a TRRS to TRS connector to connect my mic to the audio splitter. Thankfully, the mic manufacturer added a TRRS to TRS connector to the package but I didn't know what it was or how to use it until after this video. For those that might be wondering why I didn't initially try using the TRRS to TRS connector provided by the manufacturer, well, I did try but it didn't work and after this video it still didn't work immediately but thanks to the little change I had already made prior to watching this, I was able to see why it didn't work out of the box. The change was that I renamed my laptop's mic called 'microphone (..)' to 'default microphone (...)' so I would know when my laptop is using the default mic or the external mic I provide. Thanks to this change and the video, I now saw that despite using the manufacturer provided connector initially, it didn't work because my laptop didn't switch to the external mic until I manually selected it, also I now know and understand what this cables and connectors are, which I didn't initially, leading to me not being sure of what I was doing. PS: Both the default and external mic were named "microphone (...)' so there was no way to differentiate between them, also my laptop usually switches automatically but in this case it didn't.

Little suggestion here, if you have some sort of modern gaming controller that has a micro usb port on it (such as a PS4 controller or Xbox one) they will have a 3.5mm 4 pin connector on there and you can then connect that via a micro USB to USB connector and get auido from it.

I like the fact how you brought out each and every minute detail in this video. You are awesome. I love creators who think about their audience first. But, I have a strange problem. My headset was working just fine till 4 days back. Now I can hear with my headset but it doesn't recognize my voice now.

This video was SOOOOOOOOOO helpful. I bought an audio kit and it wasn't working with the lav mics I had already purchased. Turns out it all had to do with TRS vs. TRRS. Just needed an adapter. Crisis adverted.

Excellent video. Very informative and accurate. I was trying to use a 4pin in a 3 pin jack and I was getting really mad because no matter what I tried the microphone did not work. Never knew audio jacks come in different shapes.

THE LAST ONE Thank you so very much! Ordered one 3 to 4 pin splitter right now, holy I was racking my brain on why my mic was recognized as a headset no matter what I did. (I have a laptop which has a single input for audio, 4 pin)

this was actually so informative. figured out that my laptop (only one headphone jack) has a 3.5 pin, while my headphones obviously have a 4 pin. looking at a converter now!
