I've always wanted to try out a Swing Guard and see if it is a pattern I'd like. I decided to try my luck with Marble's MR109. I figured I'd rather spend under $20 to try out the pattern before buying a $60+ one from Case. A bonus was that this particular knife features the same Brown Stag Bone you find in the Rough Ryder line up. At the end of the day I do like the knife but I'm not sure I like the pattern enough to buy one buy Case.

The Swing Guard pattern brings back fond memories of small game hunting with my Uncle in the early '70s. It was his favorite rabbit knife.

Thanks for the look at these knives Tobias. The Swing Guard in particular. I ordered one a few months back and I had it shipped to a friends address in the US. Now I'm waiting for the CAN/US border to reopen so that I can collect this knife and a few others. I have a feeling I could be waiting quite a while longer. So I'll continue to admire yours for now! Take care!

Another beauty. I’m just glad to see Marbles is starting to move off of etching every inch of their knives. Subtlety was NOT their strong point for a while.

I tend to say ringed when it’s one groove, threaded when it’s 3, 4 or 5 thin grooves, but maybe it’s just me. A nice looking knife, but I can just imagine a British police officer seeing that swing-guard and the cuffs clicking shut! The cattle knife would make a better option.

I just subscribed 🤠 I recently just purchased quite a few Marbles knives . I’m an avid collector and I must say you get a whole lot of nice blade for less . Depends on what you use them for they should last you a very long time . I think they are quite beautiful. I will shoot a video very soon on what I’ve gathered so far . I know there are so many people who just don’t like Marbles because they are just not the same quality as yesteryear …… But then again ……..What is ??!! Stop over some time . Stay safe as always 🤠🙏🔪

@@KnifeChatswithTobias It is a great knife not too snappy a 4. Half stop is good. Good fit and finish one small gap, but extremely usable. I will be getting another. I haven't had enough use to determine how it holds up, but I am pleased.

I had a swing guard knife years ago. It had a seven-inch locking blade, but only a four-inch handle. And a leather belt sheath. You could use it as a short fix bladed knife when it was shut. Good times.

I know the knife you're talking about. I'm not sure it it was originally a Marble's design but Marbles did make such a knife. I also saw them made in Germany. I think they are sometimes called Swing guard or folding Bowie knives. Pretty cool!

I just bought a couple of Marbles knives. IMHO they are very nice knives! I cannot spend the money for a Case when these are so nice; and I don't care where they are made. If I want something US made, I look on the secondary market and get some bang with my buck.

Those marbles knives are really nice. I have a lot of rough riders but never had a colt or marbles, even though they look really nice. I do own a case cheetah and it's one of my favorite case knives I own. I would definitely recommend it! The one I have is in chestnut bone with chrome vanadium blade.

Thumbs up! Thanks for a look at those. The swing guard is an ingenious device- I've never had one so have wondered about them. Do you know why they are referred to as Cheetahs? The Marbles look well made- and the name is storied (safety axe!) I love that cattle knife!
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 4 жыл бұрын
I wish I knew why they were named Cheetah but I don't have a definitive answer. (see my speculation below) I know Case used to engrave a Cheetah on the blade and they gave the knife the name The concept, however is not new and swing guards were extremely popular the last half of the 19th century. I've sometimes thought that maybe in the 19th century, they picked up the name "Cheaters." The swing guards were especially popular among Card Sharps and Prostitutes back in the 19th century. As the cross guard tucks away making the knife easy to conceal, the knives were an ideal "hide out" knife. But it also seems that if the name had been known as a "Cheater", Case marketing department would have exploited that factoid.

I got the green one. Question: Why is the jigging on my knife exactly like yours? Also the front jigging matches the back exactly. I thought this was done by hand. (I'm new to knife collecting) Starting collecting in May and have over 50 brand new knives! Every time I unwrap a new knife it becomes my favorite until I open the next one. The worst knife I own...a $70 Hen & Rooster Genuine Deer Stag 6 blade Mustang. When I first unwrapped it the shield fell off. It was downhill from there.
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 3 жыл бұрын
The knives were assembled by hand. The jigging was done with the stroke of computer key, most likely. Even in the mid to late 20th century most bone jigging was being done on a factory lathe and followed a pattern. The difference is it was being cut with a blade and in some cases a person was holding that blade. Most jigging, today, especially on traditional knives under $100 I suspect is done with a laser following a computer generated pattern. The bone is untouched by human hands unless you count somebody putting in the production line. Once it is jigged, it is cut to fit a particular handle, again following a pattern and by laser. It is then pinned to the handle, most likely by hand and then the rough fitting bone is smoothed my hand to properly fit. This leads to a much more consistent jigging and keeps the cost down. If you only have one knife then it looks pretty cool. But when you have multiples in the series, it becomes obvious that the jigging is computer generated. Some like the consistency. Others are annoyed by it. I have a two toothpicks from Marble's - one in green and one in brown - that I bought ten years ago and the jigging on those knives is exactly the same as those in the Rough Ryder Brown Stag Series. SMKW has cut quite a bit of bone using the same jigging. As for Hen & Rooster ... they're overprice Steel Warriors in my opinion. I've yet to get one that was worth the asking price. I gave up after the third one!

@@KnifeChatswithTobias Thank you for the sharing the particulars. Checking my collection I'm seeing quite a few lathe cut handles -the obvious ones anyway. Kind of let down a bit. Yeah, I bought the H & R on impulse off the TV. Todd Boone mentioned that it has carbon steel. He said, "keep 'em oiled! Have you done a review of the "Blackbeard's Legacy Collection" knives? They were the first blades I picked up, they are what got me started.

I do like the stag bone. That moving finger guard though looks a bit wonky. Did make me go down the Cheetah Case hole, but still that guard. Do like the lock back. But I think I would stick with the copper lock style myself. Thanks again for making me think and reflect
@KnifeChatswithTobias
@KnifeChatswithTobias 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree that the guard seems a little loose. I need to check out a Case if I get a chance and see if the guard is any tighter on an actual Cheetah. But I'm not going to buy one to find out. Hopefully SMKW has a few in stock when I visit there during the summer. It's one thing to buy the Marbles without holding it first. It's a different story when the price is $70+!

Oh I'm not sure it is direct copy. I mean the tang stamp and blade is stamped "Marble's" and there is no Cheetah on the blade. (okay lame joke.) But to be fair the Swing Guard Knives were actually being made before Case was a company. But I think dimension wise this if very close to those of a Case Cheetah.
