In this episode we look at the latest rendition of the iconic Marble's Safety Folder. The MR477 is part of the Marble's Black Stag Bone Series. It's a big, hefty folder that converts in a medium sized "fixed blade" Hunter complete with a full cross guard!

My grandfather was a metal hunter up through the 1980s. He found a small black handle made in Japan knife with the fold out guard. Pretty cool knife.

I like these knives. Strange looking but feels great in hand. It Really should come with some kind of sheath. The factory grind on mine was okay, but re-sharpening changed it to a fantastic cutting tool.

I’m waiting for your video on the Rhino Toe! Plan to enjoy it vicariously. Think of the money I’ll save. :) I like the Marbles handle and blade, but not the guards and doodads hanging off it. Still, kinda cool.

@@KnifeChatswithTobias yes, the waiting is tedious. They create anticipation, then thwart it. I really want some sunfish/elephant toes, and all they have in stock is halloween and the black&blue. Surely they’ll offer more....? eBay is getting way too much $ for them. Must try to develop a liking for trappers, or stockmen.

Another fine Kat production. A big folder that will indeed function as a fixed hunter very nicely. I like it! Thank you Tobias for reviewing this knife and have a nice day.

You found your Marbles again, cool dood, t's a Buonita Navaja, with that blade "IT'S WATTERMELON TIME !" If somone doesn't like guards, they can remove'em, it'll take, but a pliers and maybe hacksaw

The design could probably ever made with an even longer blade relative to the hand length if the pivot for the blade cover/ lock were closer to the end similar to where a blade pivot would go if you had a second blade on the far side of the knife. If you handle length was also extended that tiny bit to match the deer slayer the resulting knife would be an absolutely monster.

I have two of these, one from you (MR256) and one that is a Stag cut Bone MR416. Both close and fit well. I put the Stag Bone one in a zipper case along with flashlight and pen and it holds a place in my car. I've only used it lightly a few times so far. Your's is a beauty, luv that black stag.

I have one of these. A very cool design and well made. The swing guard is s little wonky on mine and when I examined it closely I noticed a good bit of blade rap on the edge. But the price was right. I've heard that these were made from about 1903 until the early 1940s. I believe they dropped it from production after America's entry into WW2 so Marbles could focus on their military contracts.

That Knife Is So awkward almost a Misft . That Knife Was Constructed by Dr Frankenstein Bits & Pieces . Has Swing. Guard 💂 .The Blade out Grew The Handle . Looks like Bowie yet It Fold's. The Locking Mechanism its like a door stop 🔴 a Good push Security Is Breach. Too Much Work to work it. That Knife Suffers From multiple Personalities. But Just Because is so Odd. Makes It Unique & A Collectible. Makes it A Keeper !... 👍

Been interested in this type of knife I think that there is a knife with a long blade that folded has about 4 inches the unfolded 9 inches. Saw it in a movie when I was a kid. Don't know what it is called though.

Hello. I have always found this knife interesting. I have a similar knife but no safety features or cross guard. A full third of the blade just sticks out the back of the handle. Definatly need a sheath not pocket friendly at all. Lol. All the best. ... i had forgotten, mine is a lockback. I have just put pics on insta.

It is a fascinating way to make a folding knife. It seems to be something that you might add to a knife collection for a unique conversation piece. I am not so sure it is good choice to replace a fixed blade knife. Carrying one; would be like carrying a modern pocket sword. Many people think big blades are more useful than a regular little slip joint pocket knife is. It might be for some; just not for me.

Would this function without the cross guard? Would it for instance result in the blade hitting the back spring and wobble in the open position?

I wouldn't quite go that far but... I would say it is a solution looking for a problem to solve. However, by 1943, the same basic concept was used by the Army Air Force to to create a machete that actually did solve a problem! So there is that.
