Just Stab Me Now by Jill Bearup. I heard about it when her KZfaq shorts popped up on my feed and had very low expectations but I really loved it! As a romance hater, it was the first book that was advertised to me as romance, that i enjoyed start to finish!

It’s amazing but there are HEAVY content warnings for SA, queer and transphobia, stigmas of spicy work, domestic abuse and family trauma, traumatic birth, stigma of mental illness, and probably 100 other things! It really is awesome but you need to be in a VERY stable headspace to read it. It is not a light read. I definitely don’t recommend it for everyone.

I wonder why March is such a struggle? I had a difficult time in March as well, but I’m in Australia so the weather explanation doesn’t really hold true here - we are coming to the end of summer, and Autumn isn’t really a thing (at least not in Perth), so the days are still in the early 30s Celsius.

The best book I read in March was The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett. It was so good. I read a Master of Djinn in February, and given your feelings on that , plus the on in this video , I think you would like it - it’s heavier on the mystery I think, but it was my first novel by that author. I’m going to try City of Stairs and Foundryside now

With R. J. Bennett action writing I personally get so anxious that I start feeling bad and start avoiding the book. Still similarly to you I enjoy his books overall
@amyschmelzer64455 ай бұрын
I read The Bluest Eye in February. I liked it but I am not surprised that you did not do well with it based on other books that you don’t like. It has a lot of heavy topics. I read Home and Recitatif last year. I liked both of them, but I suggest Recitatif. It’s the story of two women, one white and one Black, who meet as girls and cross paths at various points in their lives. Toni Morrison deliberately does not tell us the color of each character’s skin. It is up to the reader to figure it out. If your copy has the Zadie Smith foreward, please read it afterwards so you don’t taint your thoughts beforehand.

Migrations was a big miss for me too. I felt like some of the concepts of the book, if you take them separately, sound really nice (cute birds, come on!), but the main character was so annoying! Also, I think I visibly cringed at least 4 or 5 times throughout the book, which is never a good sign 😂 This will sound harsh, but I wish another author would borrow the theme and write a similar book, but better, without insufferable characters...It's not your fault, Emily!
