Holy crap. I've been a CG animator for 10 years now. My first job that I worked at for 2.5 years I had to do a lot of rendering in Maya and compositing. I always rendered out an ambient occlusion layer from Maya, and I'd fiddle with the settings to make it look good. I knew how to make it look the way I wanted, but *I never truly understood the mechanics behind it* until now. Thank you so much for this well-explained tutorial! I will now be able to apply it better in my digital paintings. :)

Foxy..... what you are playing in Maya render engine is different from what Marco is explaining here. Basically change his "Ambient Occlusion" to "Global Illumination", and you get a better idea. Maya's AO pass computes in a different way.

I really wish that my professors in college had explained this as thoroughly as you did here. Instead, they barely addressed that its how light effects shadows when light bounces and then sped through the rest of the lecture. It would have helped me SO MUCH then. Thank you for this.

Dude. I grew up lower middle class and I saw art school as this fantastic opportunity that was easy to get involved with. I was wrong and I partied and I did my best and I got pretty good but once I tasted success I dropped out. Aside from the debt I never really grasped the concepts psychology. I struggle with them until this present day. I just kinda stumbled upon your stuff here and man I gotta say: Thanks.

IT'S THE WILD WEST OUT HERE. Yup. Light do as it's gonna do. I remember in college one of the most important light tips someone taught me was that right next to every shadow will be a highlight, and right next to every highlight will be a shadow.... Which sounds like utter nonsense but is essentially what you've actually made make sense!

I am legally colour blind ( thought I do see colour, just in an atypical way) and have been a bit scared to paint due to colour. However, the idea of greys blending together makes me think I could maybe get away with it, if I'm careful. Thank you.
