This is kind of a silly painting - it's not a great likeness - done from a grainy black and white photo historical photo of Charles Darwin. But the idea here is to show how to build up skin tones in gradual layers of transparent washes.

I love the 'evolution' of your painting as each layer builds up 😂. No, in all seriousness, many thanks for this! I'm new to watercolours being an oil painter primarily and it's often said that if one can master watercolours, one can paint in any medium. I'm finding watercolours difficult. Ps: Your portrait isn't a bad likeness at all and is rather good. You've captured Darwin's Victorian sternness. Full of character! Chris (UK).

I love your style. Great demo! I find it hard to know what I should paint in which pass, but I guess that comes with experience.

I’m curious what brand of brush you’re using? I assume it’s sable, really nice sharp point. Nice painting!

I like your way of painting very much, only the opaque white/light colours I wouldn't use. To my personal feeling it doesn't fit to the rest of the painting. Cannot describe really, just a feeling. This video was created 3 years ago, do you use those opaque colours still today? Thank you very much for sharing your videos. You are a great artist 👍🌈

I do! I still mix titanium white, buff titanium and grey of grey with my regular watercolors. Especially in portraits, where I like to make a 'pastel' version of a vermilion and white for some Caucasian subjects. But yes - I do like more body in some colors - this way you can put to put a high-key color down, but still have it be rich and juicy, as opposed to a thin wash. (normally a light color is simply a diluted color - right?).
