It has been yet another week of staggering scenes around SpaceX’s Starship development sites. We’ve had fire with a new twist! SpaceX's FINAL Starship Static Fire! But why? Yes, Suborbital Pad B is no more! There have been so many vehicles rolling and views to show, it was hard to even know where to start. Mixed with the continual action and setbacks to dive into outside Starbase. We had Starliner attempting to fly, SpaceX's Extravehicular Activity (EVA) Suit, Starlink - Group 6-57, Group 6-56 & Group 8-2, HyImpulse, and Chang’e 6 Update! What a week!

My guess for the “mystery” ship #26 is that it’s the orbiting fuel depot. Being permanently in orbit means it would need thrusters but neither a heat shield nor atmospheric control surfaces.

Ideal would initially be ship to ship refilling using a ship as temporary orbital storage then later make a more permanent orbital depot that never returns. so makes it harder to tell regarding if one would want recovery hardware for the test articles or not. very hard to not constantly second guess ourselves on this one.

@@jonathanmabardy Look at the tanks they built and are now taking apart. They are essentially Starship sections. To insulate them they built a 12 meter outer shell and put the insulation between the 9 meter tank and the outer shell. The shuttle tank (and Artemis 1st stage is a variant) also is just the tank with an outer layer of foam insulation. They don't need tiles as they aren't supposed to survive a reentry.

It's not easy to have a permanent satellite orbiting the moon, due to its irregular gravity. It's fiddly (=expensive) to maintain the orbit, so not worth doing until there is some sort of permanent base up there. That's why they tend to put up temporary satellites, as required.

hmm whith the venting, could it be they are going to test how venting goes. I also think if chaser and starship should test on ground to be 100% sure it works between the star ship

I have an idea of how to permanently (improve )attaching the heat tiles and prevent them from falling of.. It would require using a wire heated over the heatlimit of the tiles. Then burning the wire halfway through the tile at a 90 degree angle to the midpoint of the material and then moving the wire inside at 0 degrees to a determined position to later secure the tile to the starship. The tiles could then be secured using a wire with similar wire thicknes (heatresistant) connecting steel pins on the outer layer of starship. Hope this makes sense.

I think the hot gas thrusters may be refering not to rcs thrusters, as they planed on doing, but the actual lunar lander mini thrusters at the top of the ship.

Hot gas thrusters were specifically mentioned in the context of NASA's progress update regarding in-orbit inter-ship propellant transfer demonstration. My interpretation is that either the Depot or the Tankers (or both) will have dedicated hot gas thrusters for propellant settling and possibly ullage replenishment (on Tanker), that will fire throughout the transfer process.

@@Spherical_Cow Now that you say it, hot gas thrusters are more efficient than what they use right now so it might make sense for a depot. But also if they would be needed for the landing then it makes sense to demo them during the fueling tests in parallel with them to save time.

You don't need flaps if that ship was going to be left in space. For instance, moon lander would not need flaps, so maybe it will be used for storage transfer testing.
