Here's some input from a musician and sound engineer. Her manager is completely right. People are making comments about how she should know her songs and be able to hear anyway, here's what happens behind the scenes to make TV magic for all you viewers. The sound you're hearing on the video is a feed of her backing track and microphone going directly into the broadcasting signal. It's not a mic on a camera that's filming her right there and then. Look at the damn stage. There are no speakers anywhere for any performers to just outright hear the track, which is why they have in-ears. It stops the stage from being full of clutter and looks nicer. Whatever sound system the live audience is hearing it through, would sound awful relayed through another microphone compared to a direct signal. Also, have you ever tried singing at a concert unable to hear yourself then listen back to a video you recorded of it? Sounds awful, right? That's why a singer wants to be able to hear themselves. They risk performing awfully if they can't hear their own voice. Claims about the backing track, I can hear there are vocals on that track but they are BACKING vocals that are on the original version of the song on the CD. A producer will make a mix of the original song where everything will sound as close to the original live and all the singer has to do is sing their part over it, and the backing harmonies etc will sound familiar to the audience. The song would be very different with no backing vocals. If you heard the lead vocal lines exactly the same as the record on the backing track, THEN you have a lip-syncer. Otherwise, no. I completely feel for Mariah and can't imagine anything worse as a performer than to be put in such a horrible situation with millions of viewers watching live. No wonder she had a meltdown on stage. Anyone else would've done the same, if not, worse.

It was both their faults. They (Maria's team) should have been more understanding. She has been in the industry since she was a child. She could have called to cut the lights down to main light. Drop the dancers (as it clearly distracted her). And rip out the dysfunctional ear piece. Kill background sound. And Sing! Sing! Sing! acapella if you have to! Her mic. was working .... That is all she needs. Everyone knows she may not be at her best in the cut down version and with the pressure. But fans DO understand! They DON'T demand perfection from a fellow human. Yes sound team failed her clearly. But I have seen this with other Grammy winners live in person and they cut the excess. And they sing! The show must go on. I know she tried to be kind and I feel badly. But next time. Drop the excess. The singer and the fans will be happier. 👍🏻
