The biggest excuse for not dressing well where I live (the San Francisco Bay Area) is the so-called “casual lifestyle”. If we wear anything other than sweats, torn t-shirts or tanks, ragged jeans and dirty trainers, people say “what are you so dressed up for?”. I laugh because many of these people spend countless hours and dollars on things that add nothing to their look, like long fake nails with decals, multicolors, etc., huge fake eyelashes, hair streaked in wild colors and gobs of makeup every day. I concentrate on good, natural-looking grooming, and wearing put-together outfits - why wear ragged jeans when you can wear a decent pair? Also, I am a skirt gal, and my simple, natural fiber dresses and skirt outfits are so much easier, more stylish, and comfortable than the “summer uniform” around here of skin-tight jeans so ragged that the local homeless reject them, with a faded, ragged black tank top and about 7 pieces too many of jewelry. When I get the inevitable daily question, I just say “I’m going out”. Where have all the ladies gone?

For me ,my age (over 60) has been a season of being much more chic and stylish. When I was younger I was more sloppy and casual. I look back at myself in photos and I regret my over casual choices in clothing. Now I have more respect for myself and I invest in taking care of me!

I used to feel that I didn’t “deserve” to wear nice clothes because I was a housewife and stay at home mom, and it was hard to motivate myself to look nice. Now, years later, I realize that everyone deserves to look their best always because it affects self-esteem! Now I try to dress well for myself, regardless of who I’m seeing and what I’m doing, even cleaning my house! It makes me feel so much better to know I look nice for myself, my husband and anyone who sees me!

I had a few years in the recent past, where I felt pretty frumpy, because I had gained weight in my early fifties. Some ladies can look great no matter what their weight or shape. For me it just didn't work, because I was uncomfortable in my own skin. Once I lost that weight, I felt better and now I enjoy my clothes again. Everybody has different excuses, but a lot of women I know dress frumpily, because they are unhappy with their bodies.

Issues with weight and nothing ever fitting/nothing suitable available in the right size is something so many women struggle with and it impacts self esteem immensely so starting with self acceptance and love can make a real difference in someone’s life.

I certainly wish clothes did too! If you need tall clothing, shopping is not fun. You’ll see things, and inevitably be advised to a web site or catalog. Expensive shipping and return costs! Even Amazon has paltry tall women’s clothing. If I ever find a long torso swim suit that has a DD bra style bust to it (not just the size but the structure) I will go crazy buying. Merely adding 3 inches to the leg or arm of a garment does not help when the bust darts are at your collarbone!

Bonjour Marie Anne, Great advice and lovely blouse. One reason why women look frumpy is due to depression. They feel like they do not matter and may have been told or made to feel that way. As a result, unfortunately, they do not care how they look.
@shirleygibbs7440
@shirleygibbs7440 4 жыл бұрын
@WakinTheDeadFan If you're so depressed you don't bathe, as a mental health clinician, I encourage you to see your family physician, or a psychiatrist, about a possible need for medication (possibly an antidepressant). You are likely experiencing other symptoms as well, such as persistent feelings of sadness, loss, feelings of helplessness or hopelessness, fatigue, trouble concentrating, irritability, trouble with sleep, anxiety, excessive innappropriate guilt/ self blame even for things unrelated to you, appetite changes, weight gain or loss without trying to, loss of interest in things you used to care about, avoidance of people, thoughts of death, self harm, or suicide, thoughts that life isn't worth living. Suicide attempts are a clear signal that one needs help. In addition, paranoia, seeing things or hearing things others don't seem to see or hear are serious symptoms of depression. Only 5 of these symptoms are needed at one time in a 2 week period for a diagnosis of Major Depression. Few people experience all these symptoms. Depression may improve or even go away by itself in 6 to 9 months. But why should you wait that long when a medication could help you feel better in a week or two, sometimes less? Depression causes a chemical imbalance in the brain that medication can help. Antidepressants may be needed for 6-9 months, or the need may be for longer than that. You may think I'm out of line or intrusive, or overreacting. I'd rather do that than have you struggle as you seem to be struggling right now. So, please see your doctor if you've been feeling this way for 2 weeks or more. More info is available at www.nimh.gov . Good luck and I hope you start feeling better soon.

Just want to add another comment about age. My mother who is gone now, knew her style. She didn't wear trendy clothes, she wore ladylike clothes that made people notice her. (of course, being startlingly beautiful helped...) But, she would never go out in ragged or worn out clothes. She always wore lipstick and her hair was neat and styled. She ironed her clothes (I iron all the time...). She took good care of them. To this day, I will change my clothes to go to the store if I'm not wearing something that I consider appropriate. I'm glad she taught me well. I turned 60 last November. It hit me harder than other birthdays -but I think it's caused me to look at my clothing more carefully and choose things that will be ladylike and have some elegance. I don't think age matters. :)

I am in my mid seventies, and even now I ask myself whether or not my mother would find herself dressed in my outfit. She had impeccable style. My joke was that she slept in a girdle and stockings. She was an elegant lady even in her late eighties when she was semi paralyzed and a stroke victim. Late in life she wore pretty leisure suits and her hated tennis shoes. Her aides saw to it that her hair was arranged nicely and her lipstick was applied. I hope I learned from this wonderful teacher who was innately stylish. Good grooming was second nature to her. Here's to you, Mammy.

I wear clothes that I love. My sister tells me that I’m flamboyant and I get many comments about the clothing and shoes I wear. I wear clothes that I find flattering to my figure, nice prints and cute shoes. Nearly everyone around me dresses frumpy and some even make fun of me like I’m the only person they’ve ever seen who dresses like I do. I don’t care what they think or say to me. I always have something kind to say in return and with a smile. I have since noticed some of the women dressing better. I think overall That I’m a good influence on them to dress better and to wear the good clothes they have in their closet that they’re saving for a special occasion. I have days that I wear t-shirts and jeans too and that’s ok. Most of the time I’ll put on some cute dangling earrings and sandals with them. I got very ill a few years ago and I was pretty much bed bound. I had a lot of time to lay in bed thinking about all of the pretty clothes and things I had never worn, waiting on that special occasion that was not going to come. Or, if it ever did I would have out grown it. I thought about many other things too. So as soon as I could, I made myself get up and get dressed with something I hadn’t worn. Sometimes it was only a piece of costume jewelry with my pajamas. I realized I didn’t need to go somewhere to wear something that Ioved. I know this is long but I thought I’d share my story. I hope this helps someone.

Bonjour. Here is an excuse: I walk with a cane and have to wear specific shoes that aren’t pointy toed or heeled. I am also looking at an amputation and am not brave enough to wear a dress with the prosthetic leg. A video on being chic with these issues would be so helpful because there just aren’t any around. Others I’d love to see are 1. Bring chic while at the gym 2. Glasses as accessories 3. The top five accessories to help a woman look chic 4. Chic hair. Can an adult chic woman wear a barrette or headband? 5. How to ask a tailor to make your clothes look better 6. Going to thrift shops 7. Choosing a few pieces for whence gain weight, but are losing it slowly. What 5-6 pieces could we buy that we could mix and match? 8. Mixing textures 9. Working around trouble spots 10. Hair color for grown up women. I’m a redhead and getting some white hair and dyeing it looks cheap. How can we all look chic while going gray or white? 11. How to find the perfect: blazer, a line (Not gathered) skirts,) tailored trousers 12. How to find the two perfect colors to pair with our neutrals and how to choose the best neutrals for our skin tones. 13. Small things things like matching hardware on bags and jewelry or other tweaks that work 14. Shopping for foundation garments 15. Belts 16. Shopping vintage 17. Taking care of your clothes 18. Looking confident 19. Chic makeup 20. Perfume for adult women Thank you! 🙂

It seems I inadvertantly posted😖, so here's the rest. I live 100 mi NE of Dallas. Last winter I wore my cashmere sweaters & a leather jacket abt 6 times, sometimes because of a cold north wind at an outdoor event, or the dampness combined with temps in the upper 30's or low 40's. Often I had to change into something cooler when I got home because the temp rose. Did not wear my knee high boots at all! A good leather jacket & maybe a scarf around your neck is usually plenty. I haven't worn my fur coat in about 7-8 yrs! 😖Yes, I still wear REAL FUR when it's cold enough, but it's rarely cold enough! It hasn't snowed enough to close schools in about 4 yr. Schools close if the roads & bridges are icy - we don't know how to drive in ice or snow! Now if you're a "hard core" football fan & attend in the winter, you'll get to wear a little more of your winter clothes ... cause you know how stadiums are. So, if you have to choose between your sisters & your love for fall/winter clothes ... make that tough decision very carefully!You might try visiting your sisters for 3 months tbis winter - Dec through Feb are the coldest months, with most of the really cold weather in Feb! We had 10 days in Feb last yr when the temp stayed in the teens! I stayed in, but my husband had to feed extra to our cattle! It'd help if you have close friends in Colorado or northern states whom you can visit ... often‼ Oh, and White Christmases occur for abt 1-2 days every 25-30 YEARS! I wish you the best in making your decision! That's a tough one!! 🥴🤔🙁😏 💞💞 ♾

I know you may have many tips to overcome this reason and I am sure if you asked your followers they have some great tips too. Some of my tips and tricks are: create a list of what you need or want and always carry it with you, buy at the end of the season for next year, always look through the sales rack, watch the sales flyers for items on sale, if you know of an expensive item you want then save up to buy it, check donation and resale shops and find a style mentor like Marie-Anne Lecoeur to educate and guide you through your chic style journey.

To the middle aged and older women with shorter layered haircuts (I'm one). Short hair that has grown and lost it's shape, looks FRUMPY. Frumpy hair doesn't inspire style. Seriously, consider going even shorter with a chic pixie. Then, maintain it with frequent trims. 'Think' if it's already short, then wear the best, most flattering, short haircut that you can. Define your eyebrows, and have fun with makeup, and, OF COURSE,...follow Marie-Anne and her great advice.

At one time I had most if not all of these excuses plus the excuse of very little money. Some things that changed all this for me were first and most importantly to find my style including body shape and colors. Next was getting rid of clothes that don’t fit my life and style goals. I found a few companies that have my style and usually fit well. I buy better quality by waiting for a sale and buying with a goal. Knowing these companies allows me to buy online with confidence. Knowing my style was most important because buying the right clothes with a plan means needing less clothes and buying clothes that will be used.💕

I think you are right that dressing badly becomes a habit . I've found that only by culling the bad frumpy pieces do I stop putting them on . Through my 40s I had a huge dark grey fleece sweater type top that I threw on over top of everything because of comfort mostly . It was something of a horse blanket that I had to burn to stop wearing . I was really attached to that thing until my son's friend saying to me one day 'my mother has something like that' woke me up and made me realize that people actually took notice of what I had on .

Every morning, I wake up, don my ring, watch, and now earrings! Now to the bathroom, where I wash my face, brush my teeth and floss, then apply face cream, and now lipstick! Lack of time is the excuse for so many areas of our lives (mine included) that we want to improve. Whether eating well and savoring our food, dressing chic, going for a walk, whatever. Yes, in the areas I use that time-excuse ... it is what you say: it is my habit, my way of being and it is comfortable. Time to be uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable. A few videos I would love to see your French Chic ideas on ... chic clothing for gardening, exercise/sport, even cleaning chores around the house. Why? Because I want it to permeate life, not just feel like "Here I dress nice" and "here I dress in frumpy rags". While I won't wear a silk blouse to ruin while digging sweet potatoes, the old jogging pants and frumpy tshirts need to go.

Dear Maree-Anne, your video is all about obstacles and how to overcome them. The real reason is lack of motivation.Motivation matters! What can inspire all of us? It is very individually. Also, it can be internal intention for some women to look on their best ,even they have depression , or no time , or all around wearing differently. They express themselves in their outfits. I've just seen some of them in my family. But not all of women in my family. And for all others should be external motivation, inspiration and support. and inspiration.

I think one reason is that some people think that fashion and style are superficial and impractical and a waste of money and time. And touching on what you discussed, I think some women followed the latest fads when they were younger and kept up with their peers...but then got to the point where it all lost its meaning for them...and they confuse fads and fashion with style.

Awesome video again! I don't know if I would say I was chic, but no matter how busy I am, I take time for myself in the day (once I am on top of my deadlines). I do my skincare, hair styling and put my outfit together. I put a KZfaq video on, such as one of yours, or another lifestyle, fashion or beauty video. I think about what I want to wear and what make up I am going to use (eyeshadow colours, lipstick, etc.) as I cleanse tone and moisturise! I think every woman should at least be doing daily skincare. It doesn't have to be expensive either: being consistent is more than half the battle, while some of the big names offer great value for money, once you make the initial purchase, because the product seems to go on forever. Getting ready does not usually take me very long at all; there is usually very little time for much more than the basics, like eyeliner, lipstick and mascara to match my chosen outfit, but you can change up makeup to transform a look - different colour eyeliner, different lipstick colours... I am 53 and I have never given any consideration to my age: I just want to look right for my day, every day. It will determine my mindset and affect other people's perceptions of me, triggering a whole cycle of positivity. The thing I have had to learn is to be adaptable in my style: being able to use whatever little time there is to pull it together. I am still coming to grips with that. A brooch can transform a coat or top, a hair clip with a flower or diamante can transform your look. So can shoes, a scarf... I think it's a case of having a new vision of oneself, and bringing the outside up to date with the inside. Keep up the great work Marie-Anne! xx

Very useful video today. There's alot of women unfortunately that lack confidence because of a change in their body or as they age, and that's a true shame. Taking a few more minutes to choose a pretty outfit, something in a nice colour or maybe a little lipstick and blush can make all the different in how you may feel.😊🍁

I have a medical disorder where I can swell at anytime. It's called third spacing where fluid builds up in unusual places. My weight swing 20 Lbs either way depend on reactions. I prefer fitted clothing but it's just not realistic at this point. Even shoes are a problem, I can change shoes sizes daily. I am not alone, at the infusion center I see other women like my self. We wear knits that stretch because we maybe different by the afternoon than we wear in the morning. What we do is have hats, turban or nice hair if we have hair at the moment. Many of us can not wear makeup except maybe lipstick. We do wear very nice scarves and we try to look presentable, but it's difficult. We carry nice accessories, we want to look chic, elegant and not ill, but it's hard. The best I can do it have something with a tailored waist in front and elastic and extra fabric in was. I wear an open somewhat fitted vest with it. I have been thinking of ivy abitz clothing since it draped closet on the upper both and is adjustable at the waist, pages with an open fitted vest or Canigan that is close fitting , but can look stretch you Everything must be adjustable as we got through the day. Do you have any suggestions?

True Marie Ann, that happened to me in the 80’ and could never find fancy clothes but nowadays there are many choices. I know brands for younger women, classics outfits, work and party looks and different prices too. Many brands have extended sizes too, however I like some brands that are tailored for curvy women flattering their body and not hiding. We don’t have to wear a burka or grannie clothes anymore. Merci beaucoup for another great video, Marie-Anne! I'd like to let you and other French chic ladies know about an inspiring style transformation I came across on the Internet recently--my fellow Canadian, Pamela Anderson, the actress from Baywatch. Her blonde bombshell look became outdated as she got older, so she cut off her trademark blonde mane and got a pixie cut like yours, and now she looks AMAZING!!! She also switched to French chic style and I believe she looks even more beautiful than ever! Such an incredible transformation 💕 As for myself, I wore a polka dot pencil skirt and blouse out today and felt fabulously unfrumpy even though I've gained weight. I've decided to embrace my curves, not hide them. 😘❤

I always like to look fine because I love myself. You know at the end the person who will always be with us is...ourselves! Even at home you will always find me wearing jeans (never with holes!), a T-shirt (ironed ) or a light sweater or a cardigan when it gets cold in January-February. I like wearing mocassins at home. Sometimes my partner asks me “are you expecting a visit or are you going out?”. I laugh because I have always been like this. If I’m going out all I have to do is just take a scarf or a jacket or a blazer and I’m ready! Some months ago a lady asked my in San Diego, California “are you french?”. That proved I’m learning my lessons! So ladies, follow Marie-Anne’s advice and pamper yourselves because looking chic and beautiful is showing how much you love yourselves and that will shine around you and touch others around you. And even if they don’t follow your example well, then you will be the one shining like a star! No excuses to look beautiful, chic and confident. Love yourselves and invest in you! A bientot!

I use these excuses all the time, or at least used to. I don't have time, I don't have the money. I gained weight (and I'll buy clothes when I loose weight). I finally came to realize that I hated how I look and feel about myself and that life was too short to not overhaul the wardrobe now, with pieces I can tailor as I continue to loose weight. It makes more sense to buy the clothes now and tailor then buy an entire new wardrobe every few size drops! Like you say, lay clothes out before and get pieces that all compliment and match! I have also found that wearing clothes that do not cut me off at the waist (ie a seam across the waist) does much to improve my look. Seams across my waist make me look larger than I am.

Now I don't fritter money on thing that are "ok" I will have more to spend on the quality items I prefer but till now seemed a little too much to spend on my clothes. I often found the quality of clothes I liked in a charity shop but it's hard to select items which you need, when you need them if it's a matter of luck what you find. Also far too tempting to pick up "bargains" such as cashmere jumpers because it's a beautiful garment rather than because it's what I need. I have lots of odd pieces that I like but don't go together or fit my lifestyle. High maintenance clothes are not worn often enough. ( those which need ironing) Perhaps a low maintenance wardrobe would be a helpful video. Cashmere is great for low maintenance. Thanks for all your advice and hard work.

I have always wondered if having a casual work environment causes weight gain & it's easier to be frumpy. This is a good video...thanks for the nudge to get my act in order.

As always good advise. Approaching 70 it is always a good idea to listen to those who are so obviously on top of the game. To be honest watching Marie Anne's videos has also helped me become a better person.

Just found your storee on Amazon, so bought the kindle of plus size elegance. I have pretty good basics, once I get slimmer, and don't want to spend a lot right now, but buy just what I have to have to get by. Have many outfits in storage, including a black silk tuxedo blazer and slacks that I was almost back in to 5 years ago.

Bonjour Marie-Anne, I love your top, very pretty!! You are so right in all you say, it's very easy to forget how to dress well. Most women get married,have a family and perhaps put on weight, then it's hard to slip into a pretty dress or some lovely trousers, it's easier for them to wear comfortable clothes that fit without to much effort. I think most people have clothes for housework, and clothes for going out, not special occasion out, but to shop etc. 😘😘
