Yes, he did beat her. Their is no excuse for that. I am glad she divorced him because he went on to better himself. He quit drinking and went to anger management and psychotherapy. If only he had done that before he met her. They might have had a chance.

A quote goes by saying “Her marriages didn’t work out because Joe DiMaggio found out she was Marilyn Monroe, and Arthur Miller found out she wasn’t Marilyn Monroe.” I think Joe was sad over Marilyn wanting to be in the publics eye all the time and yet when she changed and moved to New York she turned back into Norma Jeane and married Authur Miller, and Authur Miller wanted to marry the sex symbol. I don't think she really was understood. Maybe if the world was happy with who she truly was and let her be herself it would of been a whole lot of a different story.

*_She was who Arthur Miller wanted her to be. He Wanted her to be stay-at-home wife & Mom and Not a big Movie star._* Marilyn was not all that different from her Persona. She just was Not a dumb Blonde. She was a very Soft Spoken, fun and very smart girl who read a lot of books. Those who knew her well knew that about her. Had Joe DiMaggio been nicer to her their marriage would have worked out because he really did love her as a person; just too jealous & insecure. He did change his ways and looked forward to their second chance. She would've lived for many years into old age like the other leading ladies. Lauren Bacall, Betty Davis, Shelly Winters, Katherine Hepburn... etc.

@@margo1218 Well....."beat her up" is severe. I think he smacked her around a bit (which is NOT ok) in the heat of that arguement regarding Seven Yr Itch. She had the confidence to leave him, so she did, but they stayed very close. She also stayed in close touch with DiMaggio.s son. In those days, it was one thing to shake a woman by the shoulders and "remind her who.s boss" but she didn.t need that shit bc she probably knew that kind of behavior could lead to black eyes and fat lips. All that aside, i know he regretted what he did. In fact there was "talk" that they were gonna get back together a little before she was killed. My assessment of Joe DiMaggio is that he was obsessed with Marilyn, not in love. There was even an alleged stalking incident after their marriage ended. He didn't like that Marilyn was seeing another man so he tried to break down her door but it turned out to be the wrong place.Hes lucky he didn't get arrested. Also one example of his abuse of Marilyn : he grabbed her by the hair and dragged her back when she tried to get away from him during a fight . He showed classic signs of a domestic abuser- sending flowers and being lovey dovey after a violent encounter

I agree. DiMaggio was scum and is made into a "hero" because he was a great baseball player. He could have killed her in those incidents. Miller was also scum because he bullied Marilyn emotionally with his pseudo intellectual faux superiority. IMO he was a crap writer who was given too much credit for purely political reasons. At least her first husband James Dougherty wasn't abusive. He was just a bit too dull. The incident you mentioned included Sinatra, who may or may not have had an affair with Marilyn, and the rumor was that she was in bed with Lili St Cyr. I'm not trying to be woke or anything but perhaps Marilyn, who seemed to have been bisexual, would have been better off with a female life partner.

So very sad. I think we'll never know the truth about JD and MM's private life but if the stories of abuse are true then Marilyn was right to divorce him and they should never have been re-married. Interviews of photographers about Marilyn, are so very interesting and tend to paint her in a very good way. George Barris stated that Marilyn did not hate her husbands, she loved them, but they just did not understand her. This seems to be true, but I wasn't there'. Joe does deserve serious credit for being at her side when she had great need, even if he did hit her in the past, which is truly Wrong. Yet it reveals a lot about him toward her. I sense that if he had been way more supportive for her in their marriage, it would have been far greater for both of them. If only that had truly worked out for them. Maybe then she would not have got mixed up with the Kennedys' later on, and lived a far longer life and made more films that I have no doubt we would have loved.

He beat her up after the iconic scene in The seven years itch. He wanted a little italian wife. He shouldn't have married Marilyn Monroe if he wanted that. His career was over, hers was worldwide. He couldn't accept that. Did he help her towards the end? He did. But I don't very much like guys who beat up their wives. Do you?

yes, absolutely believed he loved her. But he still beat her up because he couldn't stand her filming the seven years itch. He wanted an Italian housewife who stayed at home and sat net to him in front of the television watching sports together. Well, then he shouldn't have married Marilyn Monroe. But I agree that he did some ery good things for her when times got relly dark.

If you read up plus watch some of the interviews with Joe DiMaggio's first wife, Joe was emotionally abusive, very controlling with his first wife.. He even beat Marilyn up twice that she spoke of, people suspected that there were more incidents. Marilyn had worked too hard to get where she was, Joe wanted her to give up the career she had worked to build. He wanted her to stay at home with him, make spaghetti & meatballs, have babies. She had a career! lol. He truly loved her, he just had too many issues that no woman should have to tolerate. The only time one person should try to change another is when one of them is a baby with a dirty nappie & the other is the mum or dad.

Only Jesus knows who are really his, but since both never professed their faith in Jesus its pretty easy to assume they are in Hell. Its a sad reality if they did. As a Christian that should break your heart every day knowing that there are people who are going to hell because they reject Jesus. Should also give you a desire to spread the gospel.

Don't know if sensuality ate her up (She came and gone before I was born), but her obsession with vanity and fame really did her in. Plus Hollywood has been neck deep in drugs for over 100 years, and its really easy for someone famous to get them. In the end those got her whether by accident or on purpose. Its really easy for a women to use sensuality to get famous in Hollywood, and to her sensuality came natural. Marilyn was not a girl, she was a woman, the industry treated her as an orphan girl when she was not, she had a father and knew him (Martin Edward Mortensen) also a mother, two brothers, etc, etc. Hollywood needed her alone, orphaned, defenseless and stupid when in reality it was the opposite. Marilyn was not a woman to marry anyone, she was a woman who prioritized her career and her pleasures that included parties, unconventional get-togethers, and lots of men in her bedroom. She wasn't ready for a husband, ironing shirts and raising children, so she told Joe with facts ... Joe was the only man who really loved her, the rest was lust and spending moments with the sex symbol that Hollywood has created and that would be immortalized when he died in full swing.

The only thing I personally know about Norma Jeane/ Marilyn Monroe came from books, KZfaq, and internet. All I can factually say is she was beautiful, a great actress, and she sang well. The rest is my speculations after reading about her. I believe she was a truly wonderful but lonely hurt person. I am happy for her she was able to do something in life that she loved, at least at one point in her life. That was to be on the big screen. I am so sorry her life became so difficult for her in Hollywood. I feel she was the most exploited female actress of her time and shame upon all those who did that to her. I have read many nice compliments to her by other female actresses of that era. Whoever ended her life was a horrible person. Yes, I believe she was murdered.

I heard many years ago that Di Maggio wasn't a very bright person and that the Paul Simon song Mrs Robinson had to be explained to him, that the lyric mentioning his name as a tribute to him,and not something dishonorable as he assumed. As for Marilyn or any other person who starts life out with so many disadvantages, it's nearly impossible to help such a damaged individual.

There are several errors in the facts stated here. Marilyn was put on uppers and downers by her team early in her career, it was a common tactic in Hollywood in that era and the horrible side effects and addictive properties were either unknown or simply disregarded by the studios. Look at Judy Garland, she suffered from the same dependency and for the same reason: they wanted these women to “crank it out”, as Marilyn herself put it. The Hollywood machine didn’t care that these women would suffer as a result. So when the narrator said she was turning to those things, it wasn’t something she chose. By that point, it was an addiction to substances that kept her working, only she couldn’t ever sleep, and the insomnia combined with the drugs threw her into a horrible spiral. There was little evidence that she was a heavy drinker, but she did drink champagne. Point is, even some alcohol will be overwhelming if combined with those meds. Secondly, she was far from hopeless at the end of her life. She was on an upward swing and was making plans for the future. That’s not the behavior of a suicidal person. Even the coroner deemed it a “probable suicide,” which is an absurd combination of words & gives no certainty. Yes, Fox had fired her from Something’s Got To Give, her last unfinished film, but she was renegotiating with them. The circumstances of her death were incredibly mysterious and confusing, so it’s wrong that this doc makes it sound like she simply spiraled without Joe. Her home in Brentwood was her own, not bought for her by Joe, either.

He wasn't a gentleman. Many muscles, not much brains. If you're not supported by your man in regards to goals and aspirations, he doesn't belong in your life. That's the mistake men used to do back then. If a woman has a passion for her job, you support her. Period. She was broken inside, but she was no damsel in distress. She knew what she wanted to accomplish. Is this so hard to understand? Damn those misoginistics who can't stand having a talented and driven woman by their side. The loss is on them. And he certainly lost the game. I agree that he felt super guilty, and realised he screwed up his marriage. I'm sure he lacked communication skills, just as most of sports celebrities.
