Fun fact: That Tiger (Tiger 131) was real, captured by the Brits in 1943. Its the last operational one in the world, and the first time a real Tiger has been in a movie since 1950. Almost every time you see one in film its a mock-up built on top of other tanks,the one in Saving Private Ryan for example was a Russian T-34 with prosthetics.

I hate to be that guy but, the opening line "US tank crewman suffered staggering losses" is a myth. US tanks (mostly the sherman) had some of the best crew survival rates of the war, especially compared to the germans or the soviets at around 3% dead. Before the introduction of wet stowage, shermans burned at roughly the same rate as the german Panzer IV (the sherman's german equivalent) (about 50-80%). Afterward shermans rarely caught fire at all in comparison (10-15%); granted this is most likely a combination of both the wet stowage decreasing the chance of an ammo fire and the fact that they physically moved the ammo in the tank to a location that was less likely to be hit, thereby making an ammo fire via penetration near zero. And as a side note the whole "It took five shermans to kill a tiger" is also a myth as well. The smallest unit of tanks in the US Army was five. So when they sent tanks out it was in groups of five or more. That and do you know how many times the US encountered tiger 1s in Europe? The answer is three. The first time the shermans won, the second time the pershing lost, and the third time the tiger was being loaded onto a train and got blown up without much of a fight. Edit: To whoever reads this, please don't mistake my above rant for anger or me be a @$$hole. I love Fury as a movie and Kit and Kira's reactions to it, but the inaccuracies that it perpetuates really grind my gears and I hope my rant will in fact make people interested enough to go and research this stuff for themselves instead of just parroting the common talking points that everybody just "knows".

They only fought the Tiger 1 from Normandy to the end of the war 3 times, they saw more tiger 1 in Sicily. It's also why they didn't want to upgrade to the 76mm in Normandy even though it was available months prior. Edit: To whoever reads this, please don't mistake my above rant for insult or me being a meanie. I love the Sherman and all who loves tanks. Praise the tank god. :p

@@shanejones6541 Depends if SS. The SS could only accept volunteers; all the conscripts went to the regular Wehmacht. That's why the SS recruited units of volunteers from occupied countries, as a source of bodies who could fit the physical requirements from outside the German population. The Waffen SS was officially a seperate army to the German army, because they were the Nazi party's private army. The kid could be a volunteer straight from the Hitler Youth, but still having human feeling in him to let another kid go.

Former Air Force Security Forces here. Our training is straight out of Army infantry training. When I first had that. Holy shit I'm at war thought My first deployment, I was in Kuwait. Sitting in a bunker with a 240 as overwatch on our search pit. A car took a wrong turn, sped up. But stopped maybe 5 feet from where I start engaging. Ended up being a confused TCN. After I got the all clear, I immediately lit up a smoke and had that oh fuck me moment "this is real, I'm in Kuwait in a bunker with a machine gun with orders to shoot to kill if a line gets crossed." Haven't really thought about that in awhile. Was interesting to have that dug out of my memory bank thanks to your conversation. Also, thank you for your service Marine.

The SS German soldier that left Norman alive had his own reasons. Not sure but several possible reasons. Mine are: 1) Drafted/Conscripted to fight at such a young age with little or no combat experience. Aside from that, he may not be fully committed to their cause/ideology. Meaning he wasn’t mentally driven deep enough to make him a fanatic patriot. Given it’s end the of war already, he probably only a had short period of military training. 2) Thinks that Norman had seen too much horror & that they may share the same feeling. Both just want peace. 3) Having a pure heart compared to the rest of his fellow servicemen. I quote “True courage is about knowing not when to take a life but when to spare one.” - Gandalf It just reminded of that scene so much after seeing that. 4) Didn’t see him as threat cuz he thinks he’s no soldier. Not a trained professional one so to speak. Can tell if you know body language.

If I remember right, they've been aware of the mental effects/trauma of combat for a very long time, it just went by different names from one era to the next and no effort was made to treat it like it was damage to be fixed until psychological treatment was more developed and less stigmatized by society. In the Civil War they called it the Soldier's Heart and in WW1 it was Shell Shock. I think it was referred to as Battle Fatigue in WW2.

"What was your 22nd birthday like?" well, my 22nd birthday was in 1986, I was serving in the Navy and my ship was overseas. no specific details, just that we were anchored 5 miles off the coast of Oman in the North Arabian Sea (I served on a repair ship that serviced the warships). The Cold War with the U.S.S.R. was still going on, and that's all it was. this was also around the time the movie Top Gun came out with a very young Tom Cruise starring in it, and we all went ham on that movie!

Hi there CR-MTV, thank you for sharing this with us all. This movie was a cut above, as I see it anyway. I wanted to address your debate as to why the German soldier lets Norman alone, as he was hiding underneath the tank. If I'm being honest here, I have no idea as to why that particular Soldier would have done that. However I think the reason for it in this Movie is pretty obvious, to me, and I believe that the purpose of showing this was to instill upon the audience that even within the war-torn Enemy, there still resides some semblance of Humanity within. Even when at War, if we reach deep enough, we will find that our enemy's are not so different than ourselves, but more like the other side of the same Coin. Often, it will simply be a difference in Perspective. I think this is to help us to understand that often our enemies are not so different from ourselves. Anything that we have felt, or even thought, our enemy has probably experienced as well. Whether that be Love, Hate, Anger, Peace, Sympathy or Empathy, it makes no real difference as we are all fundamentally "Made From the Same Cloth." (Who knows, under different circumstances, we might even be Friends?) Again, Thank You for sharing yourselves and your Channel with us all. Please keep on doing what you're doing. Awesome Movie. too. So, until our paths cross again, I hope that you and yours remain Well, reasonably Happy and... Keep Smiling... Cheers...

So there's your next movie to react to, since the young lady hasn't seen "I.G." and its scalps. The Browning .50-cals were so reliable and powerful, they were incorporated into US fighter planes and on the tanks, as seen here. In answer to her question about a soldier worrying about death on the battlefield, I'd refer her to Captain Ronald C. Speirs' statement to Private Blithe about being brave in battle: "You've got to realize you're ALREADY DEAD."

Horses were pretty common for transporting supplies in WWII, across all nations. Especially when it came to invading the Soviet Union, it's such a vast territory, there was simply not enough vehicles for the logistics. So you took whatever you could, be it horses, captured horses or captured vehicles even if you didn't have spare parts for them. People have been taught that WWI and II were pretty modern, a lot of steel and machinery but all that stuff was still fairly new, and the transition wasn't as complete as it is today. They still used millions of horses back then throughout the various fronts. Very good movie anyway, at least for visual and sound entertainment, the movie itself is based on a pretty misleading premise though. American tanks were far from useless against German ones on the battlefield, and they certainly were far better in anything else ( maintenance, transportation... ). American tankers also had the best survival rate amongst all tankers in WWII. Also gotta remember that not every German tank was a Tiger or a Panther back then, especially on the Western front. Most of them were Panzer III/IV, StuGs, Marders, armored cars and other captured vehicles, and those were pretty much on par with a Sherman, while also being quite outnumbered. Any bigger German tank would have been met with unmatched artillery and air support anyway.
@patrickholt2270

The Germans had to rely on horses because they had very little oil supply. All the oil fields in the world belonged to the Allies, or were in countries like Persia and Venezuela where the Allies could control where their oil went, except for the Romanian oil field, which could only supply about a tenth of what Germany needed. Germany had a massive program of producing oil from coal, but that was still limited. They could have built twice as many planes and trucks and tanks than they did, but they wouldn't have been able to keep them moving. As it was they had to stop almost all civilian automobile use during the war.

The Waffen SS was an all volunteer force. They had young volunteers, especially by 1944 and 1945, including the Hitler Jugend SS Panzer Division. But because they were the Nazi Party's private army, they were outside the Wehrmacht, and the Wehrmacht controlled the conscription register. To get to be as big as they became, the Waffen SS had to recruit non-German volunteers from the occupied countries. I think the largest non-German national contingent of SS came from Ukraine. That's part of why there's such a plague of neo-Nazis there today, having to be dealt with the hard way by those who identify with the Red Army in WW2. Thank God they never invaded the British Isles, or we'd have that kind of disgusting legacy too. Oswald Mosley would have been our Quisling, and the British Union of Fascist blackshirts would have been put in German uniforms.
