Over 23,000 joined in the 48th running of the Marine Corps Marathon on October 29, 2023.
This short depicts some of the sights and sounds of an annual race that has been held since 1976. Runners traveled from all 50 States and its U.S. territories, as well as from many other countries to run the 26.2 mile race.
Known as the “People’s Marathon” and the “Marathon of the Monuments,” it has grown into a favorite among the annual events in the Washington DC area.
Running a marathon is not an easy task because it takes many months of preparation and training but the Volunteers and Marines make it easier with the support and motivation they provide along the way.
The race begins at Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, passes through Arlington, and crosses the Key Bridge into Georgetown, Washington DC. The course passes all the monuments. It then leads to Haines Point, the most challenging part of the race. At mile 12 runners pass the photographs of service persons who paid the ultimate sacrifice in wars abroad and in the War on Terror.
Before leaving Washington DC hundreds of DC residents cheer runners on as they proceed over the 14th Street Bridge and back into Virginia towards Crystal City. It ends where it began at Arlington National Cemetery near the Iwo Jima Statue.
