I was about to turn 12 when this tragedy took place. It effected me profoundly. In the hurt and anger I felt I swore with all of the earnestness a child can muster that I would become a United States Marine. I join in 1988 at 17, graduated Marine Corps boot camp in February 1989. I ended up serving with a Marine that was deployed to Beirut. As I watched the news coverage you all became heros to me that day, your loss, sacrifice and dedication to duty changed my life. I'm sorry for what happened and I'm proud of you. Thank you to all of those that were deployed and to the lives of the sailors and soldiers that were cruelly snatched away from us that day. You will always be remembered by me. Semper Fidelis.

I was a young Marine, stationed at Camp Butler in Okinawa. I remember this so well. I remember reading that our Marines were taking sniper fire every day, but they weren't allowed to have ammunition. It was a UN peacekeeping mission. The Enlisted Men's Club was called the "Can't Shoot Back Saloon." Our civilian leadership failed us. Make no mistake. It was the largest non-nuclear explosion in the history of the world. And tonight, there are 2,000 Marines aboard the USS Gerald Ford off the coast of Lebanon, waiting to wade ashore. We've learned nothing. Young men die in old men's wars. Semper Fidelis.

My dad served proudly in the Navy and stayed in those barracks just the day before. He has shared stories with me over the years and I listen to him. The painful memories linger with him still today. I’m grateful he made it home!! I wouldn’t be here if he didn’t. The sacrifice made will never be forgotten!!! Semper Fi Marines❤ Thank you sailors, soldiers and Marines! You went there as peacekeepers and for those who came home, combat veterans!! 🇺🇸

My late husband, Dr. John Hudson, USNR was the medical officer stationed in Beirut with 1/8, KIA that horrible day. Devastating day in history, for our country, for me and my 8 month old son. We will never forget. Thanks to and God bless all our servicemen who helped dig from the rubble with their bare hands to find the wounded and deceased, and bless all those who lived ….they gave it all and some still do. It was a totally untenable, useless and terrible political decision to send our men there to keep peace where there is none.

I was there, I carry those images everyday. Lost some great Americans that day, but I find some peace knowing that those Marines and sailors, gave everything for the duty we were called to do.

Rodriguez 20 yrs earlier on my 19th birthday Pres Kennedy was shot, it was traumatic for the nation, but your experience was very much more personal, I began to weep the second you did in this video. You are also a hero, in that you do all you can to keep the memory alive of those splendid young men as Pres Reagan said, those Marines, Sailors and Soldiers are your heritage I weep again just thinking about you and them! THANK YOU CLP. RODRIGUEZ. I doubt you will ever see this but it comes from deep in my heart and soul!

Today, it is officially forty years. There are no answers, even now, as to why this senseless tragedy had to happen, other than to say it was just pure hate, from people with a misguided, delusional sense of what they believed to be right, when in fact, it was just twisted brainwashing. For the survivors left behind, sadness and questions. How do we express our sorrow to them - over the loss of brothers - senselessly murdered? There are no words and I'm sorry, just doesn't work. How do we thank these men for their service? Thank You isn't nearly enough. As a now Retired Marine, having served for thirty two years, this isn't just a piece of history. This event was the reason I became a Marine. I needed answers to help the nine year old, kid sister, understand why my big brother was never coming home again. Unfortunately, I still don't have those answers and I'm still left with an old, cover and a pair of jungle boots. I remember the last time I saw you, in your winter alphas at memaws house, filling your plate, like this was the last meal, you'd ever eat. You went back for seconds and thirds and I think you could have eaten an entire pumpkin pie yourself, if memaw had let you. Lolol. I always wondered how you managed to eat so much, but stayed so skinny. Little did I know that less than a year later, we would be saying goodbye to you forever. Whether four years or now forty, you have never, ever been forgotten and never will be. I love you Denny. I miss you even today and will until I see you again. RIP Semper Fi.

Man 40 years I got old and yet I remember it as if it was yesterday sad day lost a lot of friends

I was at 29 Palms. A fellow Marine knocked on everyone’s door in the barracks to awaken us and tell us what happened. Never forget.

The wake-up call we are, still sleeping through. They hate us. As a young SSgt at Camp Lejune that day, I wondered, as did many of us, why do the hate us?

I was a 19 year old Seabee , Amphibious Construction Batallion 2 ... unbelievable devastation. Not much is every heard about Beruit, even though 241 died that day.

Rest in Peace Marines and Corpsmen! Semper Fi and my Drill Instructors taught us to never forget this day!

Ooorah Devil Dogs. I remember our Drill Instructors telling about the Barracks Bombing of Beirut. I wasn't Born just yet but glad I learned about it from them. One thing that hit me was when he said "I was 19 then I turned 40" I can relate to that. I was 19 when I set foot at Camp TQ in the AL Anbar Province, Iraq for OIF2. Then the Insurgency, Fallujah, Elections, IED's, Blue Diamond, Ramadi, etc...I came back 40.

I rotated home on 3 July 1983. Enjoying civilian life again until the news broke on tv. All I could do was sit there and cry, wondering why them, why wasn’t I there. Tears again, as I watched this video, a memorial to the brothers lost, both Marine and Navy. Semper Fi!

Kilo 3/8 1984 Got Some !

In 1986 after bootcamp in 85 and field radio operator training at the stumps, I was sent to 3/11 on Pendelton at Las Pulgas. After a few months there another Marine, a black guy (I say black because things weren't the same now as then) was getting out and made a point to talk to me. He had seen that I didn't have a filter between black and white, we were the same to me. He went out of his way to tell me that I reminded him of a white Marine he was friends with that was in the barracks and he had just talked to him the night before while on radio watch during a normal radio transmissions. The Marine telling me this was on the other side of the airfield/airport and didn't even hear the blast he said. (I understood that because after a few months in an artillery unit you learn to be able to sleep thru the howitzer's firing while sleeping at night in the field when you had your chance to sleep) It still kind of haunts me that he went out of his way to talk to me all those years ago about a friend that died during that bombing. Just a memory I thought I'd share.

Mind boggling to me how little news it gets every October 23rd I'm not sure if all of us but I came from Camp Lejeune and none of us knew what we were getting into lost some people lost some friends it's etched in me and it will never go away

I was there with you brother. Long time ago but the pain will always be there.

I deployed with the HS-7 Dusty Dogs as a rescue swimmer on board the USS John F Kennedy. We were supposed to do a West-Pac cruise that year but they blew up the USMC barracks in Beirut Lebanon on 10/23/1983 killing almost 300 of Americas finest Devil Dogs. We steamed full speed from Rio to Beirut in less than a week and stayed on Bagel Station for nine months as part of the Multi National Peacekeeping Force flying around the clock almost the entire time. I logged over 1000 hrs flight time as a Helo crew chief during that cruise. We lost four aircraft from the Air-wing one to Syrian rocket fire and the Indy lost one as well. To all who served and the Devil Dogs on the Beach "Fair wind and following seas" brother's, it was an honor to serve with you all! 10/23/83, never forget.

Brother we just missed being on "The Island" at the same time. I arrived on the morning of August 17 and graduated on November 5, 1982 from Delta Company, Platoon 2071 (Series 2068). ----- Semper Fi!!!!

Was in 97-05 and was in 1/8 from 00-05. I actually took my wife(girlfriend at the time) there to show her the memorial in 2000 the 1st time because 00-01 1/8 was the BLT for the 22 MEU, and we were literally deploying 2-2.5 months after the USS Cole bombing in Yemen. We went to that Memorial together before any of my deployments. Semper Fi and RIP!

I joined the corps in 1987, years later I worked a warehouse job with a guy that was there that told me how he had to dig out friends he went to boot camp with out of the rubble.😢

I remember that day well, carrying wounded off helicopters, set the stage for alot of the issues in that area. Those that survived the blast asked, " why was I spared ". I agree, the reality of life hits you fast, Semper Fi my brothers.

Mossad had knowledge of this attack beforehand and chose not to warn US forces about it. Never forget that or the USS Liberty. Never forget the fallen Marines and Sailors and the survivors.

I was on my second deployment headed to Grenada when this happened. We were supposed to go to Beirut but they sent us to Grenada first and then a week later on to Beirut.

When I heard about it, it made no sense. How could such a horrible thing happen and no one ever thought of the possibility?? Sad, sad day.

We were at CAX@ “Stumps” when this went down. . Crews was on guard and woke us up with this devastating news. Adrenaline pumped when put on Air Alert, readying for some PayBack and when told to Stand Down, the full spectrum of emotions for that reality hit. I’ve a feeling that Gen. Puller has formed one mean ass Brigade. RiP Marines.

Emad Mighnieh is the name of the leader who planned this mission, in that day Emad taught the US army to never put a foot in our home land, the US army retreated from Lebanon after this mission. He will never be forgotten may his soul rest in peace.

I served USMC 1980 to 1984 I was at Navy Base, Washington State when this happened, I remember it well, I of course didn't know any of the young men that lost their lives in Beirut, but they all were my brother Marines, I remember this well, our CO was visually very upset at hearing the news of this bombing, and the loss of life, he served in Vietnam, and knew only too well how it felt to lose so many of our young men, like this.
