Get an exclusive look at how Marines are trained to protect 175 embassies and consulates around the globe.
The mission of Marine Security Guards is to provide protection to mission personnel and prevent compromise of national security information and equipment at designated diplomatic and consular facilities. Marine Security Guards will be prepared to execute plans for the protection of the mission and its personnel as directed by the Chief of Mission (COM) or Principal Officer (PO) through the Regional Security Officer.
Congress expects the Marine Corps to be more forward deployed and to demonstrate that it's a crisis-reaction force.
Marine Security Guards do just that.
"In the wake of Benghazi, I think there's an expectation that Marines and sailors will be there and respond within hours to a threat against our diplomatic corps, U.S. citizens or interests abroad." - CMC Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, Jr. at the Senate Armed Services Committe Testimony | January 28, 2015

I grew up overseas in a city with a US consulate. One of my fondest childhood memories was interacting with the Marine guards who would use their days off to spend time with my boy scout troop. The day they showed us the consulate armory was one of the happiest in my life. It's been over 20 years, but I have never met a finer example of Americans than those Marines. Not only did they make us feel safe, they were also model ambassadors themselves. Sgts Chad and Sgt. Chaz - wherever you are, Semper Fi.

Before you want to join to look cool, look up MSG collateral duties, curfews, alcohol restrictions, marine house restrictions, and think about if you want to stand firewatch for 8 hours a day, 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year, and not be able to sleep if you have the overnight shift. I am not saying its horrible, I would still have done it again (prior MSG) but just make sure you look into it because MSG has one of the biggest recruiting programs in the Marine Corps, and they DO straight up lie to you about certain aspects of the program

I have heard that the Marines who "guard" embassies are not allowed to put bullets in their guns. Is that true? What is the point if the guard then? I have also read the book 13 Hours where it says that "local military" is used to patrol the outside of embassies. Is that true everywhere or only in thus instance. We had a cousin die while on duty at the embassy in Belgium. We were told he was a guard but he was army. Later I learned that it is the Marines who guard. So, being Army, he probably had some other job than guard? Just trying to get it all straight in my mind. I respect all branches of the military for the sacrifices they make, especially since it is now all voluntary. Got to tell you tho, my brother was in the Marines, stationed at Yuma. He was a jerk when he went in and a first class jerk when he came out.

This program has its perks. Im completing my third 3 year this month, and it has been an adventure. If you arent a fan of sitting in a box for 8 hours a day, 4-5 days a week then this isn't for you. Ive had the pleasure of serving at Embassies in London and Abidjan, and also at the consulate in Lahore. I enjoyed experiencing new cultures around the world, but the restrictions that come with being Marine, a Security Guard, and living on embassy grounds isn't the most enjoyable, neither is standing in a box for 8 hours. Im grateful for the places I've been able to travel to and experience while working in various countries though, and for the amazing people you meet while working at these embassies/consulates.

The Embassy School used to be at Henderson Hall (Arlington), I rolled thru there when I got stationed at HQMC which used to be in the Naval Annex to the Pentagon up on the hill beside Arlington Cemetery/Henderson Hall back in the day. Their school was very professional and I know they had a very high drop rate. The word was it was the 3rd highest drop rate in The Corps behind only BRC and the Drill Instructor Course. Outstanding Marines.

As kids we would all run behind them in the spray (yeah I know not smart but hey it was the 60's)...when I went thru the old tear gas "acclimation" in Recon in '74, I just walked right through it. 1st FAST 1989 here. Back then it was called MCSF before I floated over to FAST. Camp Geiger was our training station back then after ITS. I think FAST had only been around for a little more than a year. Much has changed it seems but the restrictions still apply. We didn't get a nice ceremony; Just our orders. The M9 just became standard service pistols and I think we were the second cycle to train with them. We are the true history of the Corps and it was a huge honor!! My most memorable thing that happened at one of my duty station, MarDet USS Holland, was putting the Captain of the Ship up against the bulkhead, weapon drawn, for failure to produce identification to access the N. missile chamber after he insisted entry and I gave the 3 warnings. Security Alert when off and when the team blew through the hatch sporting M-9s, M-16s and Mossberg 590s, less than 30 seconds later, it was only then we learned it was a surprise drill. That night the Captain asked me if I wanted to be his partner in a game of Spades with other officers. I then became his personal driver/protection during my last month of duty before hitting FAST. Great way to skate.

At that time, Marines were controlling the gates and I was glad to have them there. So much so, at one base, I was walking through traffic and hollered at them ... "Hey, guys!" They ALL stopped what they were doing and looked at me. I hollered, "Thank you for being here!" They seemed to appreciate it, as they had a difficult job to do.

I am a civvy Security Officer based in the UK in a large multinational Security Company, and I have to say the Marine Security Guards in this video, look very professional, and the training they get looks top of the range, I wish normal security companies provided the same security training/equipment here in England, but then again the cliental that these marines protect are a bit more high profile then the people I protect, but I will do my best to protect them despite having little to no professional training, this basically works because they have that military approach to things, but I see no reason personally why some of us in the industry should not have that same approach to our work, the best guards are the ones who take their job seriously, are good people and the ones who are not corrupt in a sense, basically people who don't disgrace the uniform in an ideal world.

I noticed that they're not training with US State Dept arms now. This is great. When I went through MSG School back in '88, there were some politics involved and we had to train with non-Military issue arms like the SW Mod19 .357, UZI 9mm, Mini-14s, and Remington 870s (although the fleet used 870s at the time as well). We carried these weapons on duty as well.

Question when the suits are purchased for thier detail as they have to blend in sometimes are they out of pocket for the marine and if so are they reimbursed or provided an allowance similar to uniforms or are they paid from Uncle sams pocket?

Not a bad gig. The US Marines are inside . The Armed Private Security Contractors are in the rain and the first line of defence. Look at Benghazi. The Marines pulled out because it was deemed to a hot zone but the poor contractors had to stay. We know how that ended.

If you're an old school MSG Marine you'll remember this: Insert the long extended portion between the body and the upper arm, ensuring the short handle is above the wrist 3 is better than 5!!!

I have been fighting for months to get the orders to MSG school. I have been accepted by MSG and even given a class date. My monitor denies me due to short number in my MOS. What I wouldn't give to become an MSG.

In the UK American Embassey London , Marines are responsible and armed fully within the embassy building and it's controlled entrance points itself not the perimeter , this is patrolled and is the domain of the Uk Police armed diplomatic protection teams (not sure if the title is 100% correct) but I spoke to one who told me that Marines protect everything within the walls of the building . Anmd any shooting to be done outside in the first instance would be done by UK police not Marines as it is officially outside of American responsibilty i.e the UK soil

@@h_oplite they are the best entry level force in the world. Meaning a full branch ,not special forces ect. You can tell by correlating examples in history to the modern marine ,You can use history as an example . The marines are sentinals at embassies, goverment buildings ,white house ,president . Like the Pretorian guard of Rome and other examples . The best trained and most expected to handle a job was used in positions like these all through history like the marines today . Of course the seals are better than marines, of course the spetsnaz are etc but as far as entry level full fledge branches of any military the marines are the best in the world . They are the best full fledged fighting force in the world .

The worst part of the program is having to go back to the fleet when it is done. The fleet, at least my MOS, was kind of dull after that. You get kind of spoiled on the program. MSG Class 2-92

Ok get this 👌🏽 I just got here at Quantico Virginia from itb with no boot leave and our major said we can go on RA for 40 days since school doesn’t start till January! (I’m like it’s too good to be true I haven’t seen my family in 5 months!) but then I get word my orders have been changed and I’m getting dropped from msg :( and going to security forces. While one of my other friend that was suppose to be here got dropped from security forces and went straight to the fleet. Wish I could’ve stayed 😞 would’ve been an easy corporal rank. can I please get an f in chat?
