I've really been doing a deep dive into City Pop recently. It makes me nostalgic for a time I didn't live in and a country I've never been to.

Can we talk about how this song is almost 40years old?? It sounds so modern, so recent. And sure the genre is retro BUT the quality of the sound, the instrumentation and her voice...SO SO modern, my god. This was way ahead of its time

I didn't discover this song on KZfaq. My girlfriend (now fiancee, and she's japanese) asked me if I knew it when started to play in a karaoke, where we went two years ago, in Shinjuku. She sang it quite well although her voice is lower... Even so, I must thank her for taught me this classic, 'cause within a few months I was already immersed in the city pop (and my style has always been heavy metal...). But it's so addictive, exciting, melancholic and warm at the same time, purely from the 80s, a type of music that instantly grabs you.

Omg that would be so cool if there was a continuing story through different MVs! I would love to see that. Unfortunately as others said, this song is actually from the 80s. It recently became so popular on the internet that they gave it an official music video, so unless they do more videos for her other old songs, it probably won't happen. The story of how it became so popular recently is pretty interesting though! It was basically at the forefront of a resurgence in the whole genre of City Pop via online trends, and its influence is now being seen in a ton of current pop music. You should definitely check out some more old school City Pop as well as some newer stuff. Off the top of my head I can recommend ANRI's Last Summer Whisper, which is also sampled in a bunch of great songs such as Jenevieve's Baby Powder and Yukika's Neon. And Tomoko Aran's Midnight Pretenders which was sampled in The Weekend's Out of Time.
