What people don't realize is that in spite of Nirvana being a bigger band, The Chameleons' influence was stronger than theirs, their sound was unique at the time and so many bands have borrowed traces of it, some of them are more famous than the Chameleons will ever be, but it doesn't matter really. They didn't make music in vain because there are many of us out there who appreciate what they did, and how they did it. They were always to honest and had to much integrity, they could never be huge

Mark pretty much summed up the music industry right here. The level of love I have for The Chameleons is inexplicable, the perfect anti hero band xxx

My whole life - even today - my whole day from inside out is a constant process of things I shouldn’t have to do or say, and things that aren’t at all too much to ask of people. That’s the Chameleons - that’s their whole point. My God - when I had to hustle retail jobs and photo printing gigs in the 80s and 90s I would just sit there listening to “The Price of Grain” by The Sun and The Moon and just feel understood in my pain over not having enough to eat. It was so essential to hear him sing that. They did it for all the right reasons.

It made a difference that the Chameleons retained creative control. When I listen to their music, those moments are very personal. I once stepped into a café where the baristas happened to be playing the Chameleons. Keep in mind, I never heard the Chameleons on the radio or in a public space. I got a bit choked up because of it, and I messaged a friend. No other musicians have that effect on me, and that’s what Mark was meaning to do. The Chameleons never treated me artistically like I was stupid, or like I was part of a demographic, and that’s what I like about them.

That barista has good taste in music. I bet you were thankful they weren’t playing country music!

@@gmar7836 - It’s not that it wasn’t country - many country songs are good - it’s that the Chameleons did right by us sad suburban working class teenage loners & dreamers, and in a way that answered some important questions & made us feel less alone. I think if you grew up a certain way then country music would be that for you. I once chauffeured for a group who went to see a Garth Brooks show in the heart of Grateful Dead country, and as I waited down the road for the show to close I could hear everyone singing along to the last songs. It was a really nice thing, even if I can’t relate to his music on a personal level. I guess you could say that for those of us who were disenfranchised early in life and for those of us who had our futures stolen and had to live in the shadow of the prosperity of others, Mark Burgess is our Garth Brooks.

The chameleons are proof that you don't need to be mega famous or selling out huge stadiums to be a fantastic and influential band. They will always occupie a special place in my heart.

Awesome interview, thanks for posting it. I was at the RPM club for their concert in 1987; I'm proud to say I still have the ticket stub AND a tshirt identical to the one Mark is wearing in this interview. When I wore it the week after the concert my mother pretty near disowned me. Reg's images had that impact. Long time ago, but not forgotten that's for sure.

hearing Mark speak about commercial success or the lack thereof makes me realise why i had never even heard of the band until novermber or december 2014. when i first heard Script of the Bridge in early January 2015 (bought the 2009 Blue Apple Music 25th Anniversary edition for myself for xmas the month prior), my ears didn't know what hit them. i was awestruck by the sound and perturbed cos' it took until i was 33 to know who they were! so thanks to songpop for the post-punk category and all the other great bands such as WIre, GoF, Magazine, The Names et al that i was introduced to!

Dood! same here! I heard second skin on bbc radio and thought, fuck me that is fantastic, is it new? cos if it is theyve hit the nail on the head with the style of the time, no, it was recorded in the 80s. I head that song for the first time on 15.5.2018 then downloaded, their album. I was 36, born in 83

A mi me paso algo parecido: tengo 42. Escuché una canción de The Chameleons en un listado de canciones de bandas de postpunk. Me encantó. Busque a la banda en Google.. esto fue hará 7 años.. y me fui haciendo fan. Hoy soy un camaleón más

The Sun and the Moon was formed in late 87 just after the Chameleons split. The Chameleons put out albums in both 85 and 86. This interview was recorded during the Chameleons 1987 North American tour. Their last live dates until 2000.

"I hope there is a revive of Post Punkism coming out of the UK soon." There is a post-punk revival going on right now. And it doesn't even begin to touch the original movement. I don't think young artists rehashing music styles from before they were born is the solution to problems of popular music.

I think we are saying the same thing. Bands borrow from previous bands...and that is ok as long as it's not a xerox copy, that you add some unique take on the sound. Nirvana had some unique sounds. So what are some good songs from The Sound?

Dude, The Chameleons were about the music. I think that says more. Kurt Cobain had some great tunes but he owes everything to all the punk and post punk bands that came before him. He has borrowed from The Replacements, The Ramones, just to name a couple.

@andywarstar The very noteable difference between Kurt and Mark Burgess is that Mark is genuinely talented. Don't get me wrong. It was tragic what happened to Kurt Cobain but Nirvana has to be one of the most overatted bands ever to walk the arth.
