Rock n roll may have originated in America but the collaboration with the Brits is really what gave us hard rock & guitar virtuosos like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck & American Jimmy Hendrix. A great example of that collaboration was American Link Ray. In the early 1960's Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page etc. heard Link Ray's dist power chords on "The Rumble" and combined it with the delta blues stuff they were all playing and voila, heavy hard rock guitar was born.

Mr. Farner makes a valid point. Think of how different things would have gone if The Axis and not the Allies won WW2. All that music that influenced the babies born in the 1940s and 1950 and the generations afterword would've been destroyed on a huge bonfire, the artists imprisoned and forgotten, or murdered. The government approved music would be classical or sea shanties, music frozen in time. Whatever was tame enough not to rouse the teenage hormones. I shudder to think of that grim scenario..

OK ..."Started in America"..sorta... the backbeat;as in blues, which is an African 2 & 4 beat notion;which never existed in American/European music, before;didn't just spring up out of American soil. that's just simplistic, and wrong. BTW,i'm a big GFR fan...

@Starpass - I see your angle of thought, and by today's standards, it's easy to see why you feel that way. During their best years (69-73), GFR was a heavyweight contender!! Their music was hard hitting, with a groove like no other. They were outstanding, far better than they even knew! They could have gone so much further had they built on their original formula, but they instead went towards poppy mainstream poop and racked up the hits, and lost a LOT of their old fans along the way.

@Starpass Oh man...have you ever listened to the album "Grand Funk" by GFR? Are you CRAZY!?!?! These guys played heavy rock music for that time man. Listen to that album, and then give me your opinion. Seriously, you are going to burn for saying that, because you are totally wrong!!!

The Americans created rock and roll but the greatest rock bands of all time are mainly British. Beatles, Stones, Zep, Deep Purple, Queen, Sabbath, Maiden, The Who, the Clash. But Americans had most of the bigger 'personalities, Elvis, Hendrix, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain.

He touched on it Beatles singing " Smoke pot " We'll there's a whole lot more going on behind the scenes of the Beatles and their Involvement w/ the Tavistock Institute out of London . Short story , Beatles were the spearhead for introducing Drug Culture and everything associated with it , Long Hair , Hippies etc etc .... None of it was spontaneous .

The Beatles' songs were "all sung in American English"??? No disrespect to Farner--I'm a fan--but what does he mean by this?

Pegasus because their English accent wasn’t noticeable when they sang? Thats my guess anyway. ✌🏻

They rescued Blues, which was the predecessor to rock n roll...and all the Brits have no problem speaking to the origins of the American players that greatly influenced them...as with the Beatles & Little Richard / Chuck Berry...or John Mayall & Lead Belly and others...both the Beatles and Mayall were playing rock n roll in the 50's. Not to mention the 'Fusion' aspect of the progressive rock movement, which i believe started in UK for the most part . Yeah, USA, birth place, no doubt, and of some of the best...bet it was the rest of the world that 'integrated' rock and roll & the blues in more ways than one .

"Sung in American English"? Please.... All the inflections, the pronunciation, from "yeah, yeah" to "good gawd y'all" that comprises early rock 'n' roll and is STILL present is white Americans / British imitating BLACK Americans!

And also it's from the song I am the Walrus which was on Magical Mystery Tour, not Sgt. Pepper. But hey, he's Mark Farner so I for one am not gonna argue with him.

I love mark and GFR: my first musicassette in 1971 was "survival", fer chrissakes. that being said, it seems silly to diss british rock and to claim ownership for something. UK rock was one side of the coin, the U.S. was the other. as for the beatles "singing in american english"? I beg your pardon: I am the walrus? lovely rita? she`s leaving home? I could go on and on, american english this is not!

I have always been a huge GFR fan, but if Mark is dissing the Beatles for references to pot, that's certainly hypocritical. Just listen to the Live 71 Tour album, where he says "I want to dedicate this song to everybody out there smoking marijuana"... Guess selective memory helped him forget about that huh...!

Farner re-writes history as he likes to do. Blues artists like Jimi Hendrix were a hit in England, first, then America. The USA wasn't interested in the blues until the Brits appreciated it first. Agreed, the rock n' roll form is entirely American, but if you grew up in the mid-late 60's, the bands you were listening to were overwhelmingly British. America made rock, Britain made it roll. "Smoke Pot" is the best he can do for a Beatles lyric ? And he didn't advocate pot himself ? C'mon, Mark.

there are scores of famous drummers who have said brewer was a major influence on their playing (learned to play playing to gfr albums). how many great guitarists have given farner credit for their playing? zero (that i know of). brewer is an infinitely better drummer than farner is a guitar player. no brewer back then, no gfr

Hugely popular trio, selling out stadia, and you're trolling his guitar playing? Ha. Good luck with that strategy. He's a one man band package up there, singing, blowing his harp, funky rhythm chops, and then searing leads. The three of them were perfect together (for a while).

@pretorious700 That is correct also without Country artists there would be no rock as well. When you blend the blues and country you have rock music..
