12-time All-Star & 3-time Silver Slugger Mark McGwire was in the room where it happened. As the San Diego Padres hitting coach, Big Mac helped pitch Shohei Ohtani on playing in San Diego. Big Mac talks about proposing SHO-time play the outfield, and how "effortless" baseball's biggest star is making the game seem.

I don't think there's that much mystery to why Shohei chose the Angels for his first MLB club. A combination of Mike Trout being on the team, no DH in the NL at the time, and the southern California conditions, also closer for a visit to his homeland. I'm glad he did that. Most MLB clubs would have tried to force him into choosing between hitting and pitching. We've been able to see what a superb talent and very focused athlete can do if they decide to excel at both. Maybe only Ohtani is capable of that, though I'm sure others will try.

DH was the main reason he didn't go to an NL team because to play the outfield daily and pitch is too much for the human body! Ohtani has played all but 2 games this year and has admitted to being tired lately. There's 0 chance he could play outfield and pitch too without being too tired and his body breaking down. I'm hoping he goes to the Dodgers next year because he'll still get to live basically the same socal live and they consistently make the playoffs. Teams have been barely pitching to Ohtani since the all-star break and especially since toronto intentionally walked him so much. I think he has 20 or so solo homers too, otherwise he should have 100+ rbi by now. I can't wait till he goes to a team where they can't focus on getting Ohtani out and pitching around him!

Count the amount of intentional walks he received on those weeks before saying something like that... Teams haven't been pitching to him lately and has literally zero protection on the lineup... his "decline" isn't because he's tired Compare him to Matt Olson for example, who has Acuña, Riley and Albies and I would say that 70%+ times he steps on home plate there's a player on base
