The Mark VII is an underrated horn. The tenors are very powerful. Really appreciate these videos by Douglas Pipher.

I’ve had my MkVII alto since it was new in 1977, Serno. 267452. I recently had it overhauled. The man doing the overhaul fixed so many things that were wrong since it was first made (left hand pinky table not correctly aligned, bell bow clamp was broken, etc.). It was always pretty good, but now it is simply amazing. I think the MkVII got a bad rap because Selmer France was building them badly, but they were designed really well.

I have a Mk VII tenor in the 262,xxx series, done in a black (charcoal-grey) lacquer with gold lacquer keys. The shop I bought it from also had a similarly finished Mk VII alto. They also had both a Mk VII alto and tenor in silver plate. I’m curious how many of these black lacquer horns exist.

The mark vii only made altos and tenors. Mark VI continued to produce sopranos and baritones until 1981 when the super action 80 came into production. The late Howard Johnson played on a Mark VII baritone.

Interesting that, other than in the video description above, this episode doesn't talk at all about the characteristics of the model, or what makes it different from previous models. I loved seeing the low-A alto in the vid, though. Were there more low-A's made during the Mark VII run than during the Mark VI period?

I also thought it was interesting they used a low A alto in the video and would like to know more. According to SaxPics the only low A altos were VIs, not VIIs.

@@ElieBergsman I'm pretty sure that's not a VI pictured in the video - VIs don't have the oval alternate F-sharp key (they have round ones, like the front keys), and the right-hand pinky keys don't look like they're from a Mark VI either. If we could see the left-hand spatula keys, it would be easy to tell, as the Mark VII's look quite distinctive.
