This one dude I met, who owned a $2 million skyscraper condo in front of a major lake as well as property in other noteworthy places, would dress like a total fucking bum while out shopping. Ratty gray hoodie with holes, faded blue jeans, Birkenstocks with socks, unkempt gray hair, non flashy credit card for every day purchases, would only buy stuff on sale. The only reason I knew he was wealthy and powerful was because I was invited to the building by a certain friend. But it opened my eyes to how the powerful remain under the radar and keep their money in check, at a time when I was really into flashing logos and status symbols. They avoid unnecessary attention, both from their enemies and the law. "Wealth Whispers".

Decision fatigue *is* a thing. We make 35,000 micro decisions in a day, and it can be effective to lighten that mental load with something as simple as not having to decide what to wear, especially if you don't care about fashion at all.
@baval5
@baval5 Жыл бұрын
@@pkmntrainerlilly5 If we make 35,000 micro decisions a day, im really not convinced lowering it to 34,996 by not picking your shirt, pants, underwear, and socks is going to change that much.
@DevinCorrington
@DevinCorrington Жыл бұрын
@@pkmntrainerlilly5 This is especially common for people on the spectrum such as myself. It doesn't just end with wardrobe. I commonly eat the same things every day and have very specific routines I follow daily. Zuckerberg himself seems to show many signs of being on the spectrum himself. For some people like me, making decisions like what clothes to wear at a given time uses about the same mental energy as taking a pop quiz. It comes down to having issues with executive functions. Also fashion just isn't important to me. It's all about comfort. Things like tags and certain materials can cause overstimulation so keeping things simple and familiar is comforting for me.

This is also one of those cases where “money talks but wealth whispers” the truly rich aren’t wearing clothes slapped with bougie brand logos or instantly recognizable brand styles, they’re wearing plain looking clothes that cost hundreds or thousands but look like they cost 10’s of dollars. They’re covert and comfortable in their wealth vs people like the kardashians (just as a well known example) who are screaming their money with their clothes. The truly wealthy could walk down the street and you probably wouldn’t be able to pick them out at first glance.

100% this. At the same time, we have something like haute couture - where the clothes being shown are stupidly expensive AND ugly to boot, but why? Because haute couture is ART and you're not supposed to look good wearing it, you're wearing a statement that says "I have more money than you could ever spend in your entire lifetime, I'm wearing the Mona Lisa of clothes". Being rich has a lot of perks, but also a lot of insanity is what I'm trying to say. I do basically the same thing. I have like 20 plain black t shirts and a dozen pairs of identical pants and a half dozen pairs of identical shorts. If I'm wearing anything different it's a special occasion. Just more efficient that way.

It makes sense but I don’t quite get his own reasoning 😂 Like, can’t we just..not make a choice? Just grab whatever shirt’s on top of the stack or at the end of the rack & that’s it for the day. They don’t necessarily have to be all identical for there not to be any oooohhhh such difficult choices (yup) to be made

@@CantTellYouas an autistic person there is a difference for me. I feel way more relaxed wearing the same outfit every day. It’s not just the fact that I don’t have to make a choice though that is a large part of it. Having the same feel and the same look is relaxing. I think many neurodivergent people feel this way.

After dealing with body issues my whole life, I finally got rid of all my clothes, went to Joannes and got 5 black T shirts and 5 long sleeve shirts: each for $5 dollars. I have 1 pair of jeans and 5 pair of leggings. I haven't thought about what to wear for 3 years

Finally, someone else besides me who appreciated that lol. Surprised so few people mentioned that. I guess it makes sense though, seeing as I think the last one closed in 99.. so a very large portion of viewers are too young, so have no idea wtf it is and didn't give it a second thought.. which also makes me feel really old, seeing as "too young" accounts for people in their mid 20's even. Remember going to Caldor all the time with my mom, in Ellicott City Maryland, as a kid.. before it turned into a Kmart. Which I'm fairly certain are all extinct now, too.. (or very nearly)

I get that I want to dress like a cartoon and wear the same stuff every day, I did that with everything but shirts. I had a bunch of Dickies shorts, 24 pairs of socks, and 3 different pairs of shoes I would rotate. I had a few different hoodies and Jnco jeans when cold, but as I hit high school it was easier to dress that way instead of sitting there deciding what to wear everyday.

I have metal band t shirts for special occasions and about 200 Hanes black pocket t's for everyday, and either dark gray or black shorts. Even for winter. I live in NH, so winter I wear knee high wool socks and summer it's ankle high socks.

It depends on what your job is. I wear the same thing every day because I don't really interact with many people (I'm an animal behaviorist). If I need to look professional for clients, I have two sets of the same business casual/still pretty flexible and durable outfit for looking like I know what I'm doing, but easy to wear so I can walk around a muddy farm in sleet being tackled by dogs without being put out. Self expression doesn't need to change every day. My clothes are my favorite brand and style, very comfortable and durable, and my favorite colors.

i guess it's a balance. there are the meaningless decisions you make that have no impact on your self expression that will drain you, those are the ones you should routinize and phase out. and the ones that do impact your expression and are important to you, those are the ones you should be dedicating decisionmaking energy to.

I have the free will to wear the same clothes every day, and you have the free will to not. I wear basically the same clothes every day for the same reasons as the lizard king here, only I don't actually interact with many people professionally, so no one is there to care. I don't want to waste an extra 5-10 minutes of my daily life trying to mix and match a new outfit every day, when my only clients are animals.
