For me the real time shading is what I need to learn. I'm a visual learner, so I learn more by watching people rather than just teaching myself the best way to do something. So thank you Mark for taking the time to do this video. I promise it has not been wasted.

Patience is so paramount, I had to train myself to slow down when drawing and painting, the results are so much better when not rushed.

One problem is if you're working on something for an exam - like the GCSE art qualification in the UK. You get ten hours - and that soon goes. You think it's a long time - until you try it.

I appreciate watching your work unfold slowly. My own speed is full throttle and I’m making too many mistakes. To watch your carefully gentle strokes come together, giving the picture form, makes me realise how crucial it is to go softly. Don’t be self conscious about your voiceover. You have a rather soothing voice pattern that also helps convey the necessity for gentleness as you shade.

Like so many others, I think the real time is fantastic! My drawing tends to be rushed and while part of that is me, I think watching 100 time lapsed videos contributes to my problem as well because it speeds up my internal clock. Real time video, on the other hand, gives me a specific example of what I can, hopefully, someday achieve. You are literally demonstrating the patience needed to get the results we all desire. This video "resets" the whole pace expectation and that is why it is so truly helpful. Thank you so much! I could write more but, right now, I need to draw something...

THIS IS the way to help us understand your process and learn about your technique(s)! Thank you! Breaking it all down more slowly is inestimably helpful. This video couldn't have come at a better time for me. Now that I've got some basic drawing skills down, the temptation to rush through the shading has been pretty strong, to the point where quality has been backsliding somewhat. Mark, you are spot on for allowing me to look over your shoulder while you shade in real time. Shading is fundamental to a realistic portrayal of your subject and so subtle it's difficult to grasp other than to see it done. For me the talking is welcome and answers my questions as the pop into head as you move along. If a viewer finds it is too much they can always take a break and return later with a fresh perspective. As for me please continue the way you share your knowledge, It works for me.

I greatly enjoy watching you do as much real-time as possible. It gives a much better sense of just how long it takes to produce a quality drawing, and shows that you really do get out exactly what you put in.

First off, this is an incredibly beautiful and inspiring work of art. Thank you soooo much. And as far as time-lapse, I prefer real time no matter how long it takes because I try to draw along with you. That's how I learn. I love the slow shading and commentary. It’s easier to learn and see why you do the things you do. Anyone can put lines down on a paper. But to see how you bring it to life is where the gold lies. This video is amazing and I hope you do many more like it

It's always revealing to watch Mark's video every time I got some real obstacles in drawing. Getting rush in shadowing is always a drawback for me and I did not pay much attention to it before.

I appreciate the real time and the advice to move slowly because I saw details that I may not have caught had you moved faster. I realize that moving slower really does allow you more time to investigate, explore, and do some guess work in order to produce as many shades of gray as possible rather than just the dark darks and the light lights.

This is my first time watching your videos, but I can honestly say that they are very useful. I really liked that you showed how to shade, in real time. Some people just see the finished product of a drawing. They never know the exact time and patience that is required to get an amazing work of art. So thank you for this video!

As far as I'm concerned the Pieta is the most beautiful piece of art ever created. Even your version is so beautiful it's like you're touching a living face. I also honestly like to watch the whole process in real time. Every stroke is interesting.

Thank you so much for this video, it made me see how impatient I have been in the past with drawing and that is why my drawings have never been as good or "finished" looking as they could have been. This is the best video I have found on shading. Most of the other videos I've seen rely on blending tools and I don't use them, so for me this video is perfect. Thank you.

Youre right theres not much you can say but it really helps just being able observe you go through the long process. Helps me bring a greater detail to my drawings when I can watch you do it in real time so I can see your hand techniques and how you place your lines. Ive always had trouble with shading large areas like faces in a realistic style

I really enjoyed your video and the fact that it was mostly real time. There are parts you could definitely speed up but all the information you came up with while at certain stages throughout the process was really good advice. It's more like a lecture in a classroom when you get to watch it real time and you get to match up the info with each step as you go. I like the way you did this video. Time lapse when you don't have anything to say and real time when you do. In any case, great work!

I really appreciate you making a full length video. Shading is personally a rough spot for me. Watching you do this full video has helped me understand the process more completely. I'd say you doing a video of you shading a picture with music and you talking over technical areas would be amazing. The more I see of you shading the more I grasp it. I really liked this video, sincerely. Whenever I'm watching these kinds of videos, I try to catch the moment when the bunch of lines turns into a "real" person or thing. It's almost magic when the drawing starts to "live". I've struggled with some realistic portraits so far and I know how much time and effort does the shading take, even if it's as far from perfection as mine. The video gave me (or rather reminded me - I've looked through numerous shading tutorials so far) some useful information. But most importantly - it reminded me to be patient with all this. I'm aware that impatience is one of my biggest faults while drawing...

I definitely get why you use time lapse, but then again a video like this one once in a while is really helping! I always tend to think that professionals are able to achieve good results fairly more quickly because they have practiced more and know the technique so much it's almost a reflex, but it's now obvious that there's no going faster, you just have to sit there and work patiently. Thanks for this video!

I find it helpful while learning to do pencil art to watch how you draw and shade in real time. So, I'm very glad you shaded for part of the video in real time. As far as whether you need to talk the whole time or play music if you think you are running out of things to say, I think whatever you decide on that is fine. However, I don't think it is awkward at all if there are times when you are not talking for lack of anything to say. I think we are here to learn, and you are actually telling us things just by drawing even when you are not talking. Thanks for the video.

I find these videos incredibly helpful! I've been watching your youtube videos since the very beginning and I absolutely love them. I'm not a fan of time lapse, personally, because during the time lapse I can't really tell what you're doing as well and I miss stuff. So, to see the videos without time lapse is super helpful to me.

I love this video! It is the perfect timing, I am taking a short drawing class, and yesterday we started shading. This was very helpful. I realized I just need to slow down. I am also working on mindfulness, this is great for that, also very relaxing. I did like the way you divided the video.

Mark, this is one of my favorite videos of yours! Shading, tone, and contract are so important. It was very helpful to watch it in real time and understand how long it takes and how patient you are. I think it's fine to have silence at times, so please don't feel that you have to talk the entire time. I've seen other videos where an artist draws in real time and splits an entire drawing into three or four videos with lots of silence. That works just fine for me. I appreciate your time and effort in making these videos for us! Thank you! - Esther

markcrilley I think it was a pretty nice thing i don't know but probably you could do some "long" video's with at the start you could sai (after the drawing edited into the video) on whitch parts of the video you say somthing and what happens during the video as an exemple: a 4 houre video (probably 2 or 3 parts if youtube stops you on this durations) and say at the start somthing like: "the first 1.5 houres are sketching/linework* a special comment about that thematic is at the 27th minute on this way people who don't want to see the sketching/basic lineart will just skip that part and go to the one they're interested in even if there is just music i think every artist who relly want to get better will watch you carefully how you're doing it so they could notice things like how you hold your pencil without commentary and if they want to hear the *special advice* they'll klick to the place where you said it, and if they're interested to watch you doing that stuff they will skip to / watch that part again
