Coming back after knowing all the lore and seeing the puppet cutscenes makes everything like… make so much sense. Like… after Charlie possessed the puppet, she helped the others possese the animatronics. And when it came to Cassidy, she put her in Golden Freddy, which explains his jumpscare.

Actually lore wise what happened to Cassidy was likely William testing the idea of possession, likely caused by either the death of Charlie and the marionette becoming aggressive towards him after or from the death of CC because CC possesses the golden Freddy plush. He likely noticed the plushies eyes followed him. It's believed that because of the hints in the short stories (namely chicas highschool stories) that it describes how William lured and killed the kids. Cassidy was in the same school as Michael, William showed up, looked for a kid walking home, followed, and then put a bag over Cassidy's head and beat her unconscious and brought her to Freddy's where he had to wait all day for it to close. Then William brought her inside into the secret back room and put her into the springlock Freddy suit. The springlocks went off while she was inside, killing her agonizingly. Cassidy wasn't the first kill though, Charlie was. Charlie is Henry Emily's daughter, and after the death of CC, William blamed Henry and got revenge by killing Charlie after he was passing by the restaurant and saw that she was locked outside. (Kids at the birthday party locked her out) this is seen in give cake. It's believed because of another animation later in the series that William, being basically and uncle to Charlie, was able to lure her away from the doors and windows and then killed her and sped off. There is a lot of lore to comb through but I recommend watching GIBIs 9 hour lore drop.

Because the first few times he did it, it was too late, and given how hard he was panicking, he interpreted this as "Mask entirely ineffective" as opposed to "Mask only effective when done IMMEDIATELY."
