Design a V-Carved Monogram in VCarve or Aspire - The Easier Method
More down here ↓↓↓ Click SHOW MORE!
This video is geared toward the person who is a beginner with the Vectric Software.
In this video, I’ll show you how to design and calculate the toolpaths to create a custom V-Carved Monogram wall hanging in VCarve Desktop, VCarve Pro, and Aspire using a Split Initial Font.
I’ll show you where I found the font, and show you a couple more downloads available on that website. Then we’ll create and size our monogram initial, then convert it to curves. I’ll show you how to use the Vector Validator to help you identify problems within the initial, then demonstrate a few methods used to fix those problems. We’ll we’ll then add our text, adjust the spacing between the letters (kerning,) then size and scale it. Then we’ll Calculate the toolpaths, and Preview them all.
As usual, if you have any comments or questions about anything I covered in this video, please put ‘em in the comment section below.
On Sunday, March 22nd, I’ll be hosting a LIVE Q&A session, where you can ask your questions pertaining to anything I covered in this video. That Q&A starts at 3 pm Eastern time, Noon Pacific time. Hope to see you there!

Mark, I wanted to drop you a note. Just because I was reviewing.... Thanks again for the help. I am sure I will need more suggestions in the near future. Also...in regards to the vid, impressed to learn about the means by which one deals with the larger letters. Got the split font and fooling with the SVG's as well. (in F360 of course) Haven't my licence for V Carve till the months end :-) can't wait. Using Fusion 360 to attempt some v carving of dxf and svg. So far so good. Wood router folks have to define practically every tool. All v-bits, flat facing type, tapered ball, even smaller endmills. It would be very difficult to simply set the max depth and generate clearing and v bit and toolpath that were derivative of one another in Fusion 360. But hey I am still going to try anyway because I seem to have a lot of time on my hands. I also am a glutton for punishment. Regards

I watch every video. Good job Mark, best videos on the web. Can you do a video on toolpaths for editing/recalculating, attributes, etc, so one can just change a text for example and have a new model to carve without redoing everything.

Another way to reuse something you created in another project file to a new project file, is to open the older file and highlight what you want to reuse and then "copy" it, close the file and then "paste" it in the new file. I do this frequently with bitmap images that I have doctored up.

Absolutely love your teaching style! Thank you sir! Question: why can you not save the letter as a template then add the unique name to a file? Granted you’d need 26 files??? I’m very new so pardon my ignorance

Thanks for this tour of split fonts. Of course I have seen this lettering but knew nothing of the source or nomenclature. They do a very nice job. Currently experiencing much difficulty with configuring my new 2 x 4 table with Mach3 and can only dream of actually making chips. Sad because I have plenty of post ready design It is probably the cheap XHC controller or me or both. I don't like dealing with Mach3 it is neither conversational nor intuitive

I would recommend you head over to the Mach3 Support Forum, join, and ask your questions over there. They're a group of Mach3 and Mach4 users and testers who will be able to answer your questions, and get you up and running smoothly. There are some real wizards over there who are glad to help. You make this look so easy. Hows did you learn so much about this?
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 3 жыл бұрын
I learned it the same way you're learning it now. I watched a lot of videos, asked a lot of questions, got into Facebook groups and various online forums, then got into the software and drew projects. I made friends with people who have been doign this for awhile, and bothered the people who created the software for answers to questions. I made a lot of mistakes and tried to learn from those mistakes. I always practice on scrap materials I get for free before I try the project on expensive materials (I'm super cheap that way.) My grandfather told me, years ago, that there's no replacement for experience, and the only way to get that experience is to do it. Seven years ago, I had never been in the same building with a CNC router. Keep at it. You WILL make mistakes - everybody does. Try to identify the mistake, learn from it, correct it, then drive on. If I can do this, anyone can.

Great information video. I’m pretty new to this but wondering if after making the modifications you could save it as a CVS file then open as a new project if you don’t put the name in it? Just wondering!
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you certainly could. I didn't mention it in the video, but it's encouraged. I would name it something like Monogram Letter Template.CRV To use it, open the file, then immediately Save As... with a different name. That way your template file goes unchanged.

What does converting to cures mean and do? Thanks mark
@MarkLindsayCNC
@MarkLindsayCNC 3 жыл бұрын
When you first enter text, it is treated as a solid, joined object - not as individual vectors that make up the text. That's why it is referred to as a "text object." You are very limited as to what you can do with that text when it's still a text object. "Convert To Curves" converts the text object to individual vectors that can be edited just like any other vector can. For instance, if you want to remove the dot at the top of a lowercase i, you can't do that if it's still a text object. If you try to select just the dot, you select the entire letter. If you convert the text object to curves, you can then select that dot separately from the rest of the letter i, and delete it, move it, resize it, replace it with a little heart, etc... That's just one example, but hopefully you get the idea.
