7:13 Assuming this level of break-down was left to the armorers, US Army armorers would have a small vice as part of their basic manpackable field tool kit, so they always had it. Ideally, the vice would be used with special blocks to ensure the best grip, but you can improvise with tree branches and other stuff, even the stock of a rifle if really pressed for options.

I have a Jorgensen clamp that I'm sure would do the trick, Put it on the tailgate of a truck, somebody stands on the end of the clamp, bam, good enough vice.
@jolly3633
@jolly3633 2 жыл бұрын
If 'not in a vice...' Place the M10 tool into the chamber and close the bolt (gently). Let the op spring provide the pressure to keep the smaller springs in place. Insert a cleaning rod into the same hole you used with the screwdriver, and rotate to lift the extractor out of place. Reverse to reassemble the bolt. Admittedly, the reassembly is a bit trickier, aligning the groove of the plunger takes a few tries, but the whole assembly is laying horizontal. Or just get the $50 tool that does this it for you.

I’m active on the CMP Forums. In rare cases something gets by them. Given the volume they have produced it’s inevitable despite outstanding people and processes At Anniston. That said they have epic customer service and they make it right. Why everyone doesn’t join and get an M1 is beyond me.

In '08 I got my M1 from CMP. Would not accept a loaded clip. Bullet guide was bent inwards. One phone call to CMP was made. I explained the issue and also reported the lockup with the trigger group could be better. This resulted in a free replacement bullet guide and a bag of various parts including a milled trigger gaurd with a good hook. I received all this the next day. 595 bucks for the service grade rifle and peerless customer support. Hard to beat.

@@jjeckerm06 Nothing wrong with an 03A3 and M1 prices are stoopid high because of well, people taking advantage of CMP rules and buying them from CMP for profit. Your rifle is a fine example of US History and a damn good shooting iron to boot. I have two of them, both 1943 Remington. Brownells sells a special tool that holds the entire bolt enclosed in a small aluminum frame and has a lever that puts pressure down to remove the parts. Obviously, the benefit is that that ejector spring doesn’t go flying off the planet! 🤣 anyone who owns or shoots an M1 Garand knows this as well as M1 thumb! 🥴 I honestly believe that the Garand is like a Swiss watch, John Browning was an absolute frickin genius. I can say first hand that I have had several things come from Anniston not exactly right. some minor things, but what I consider major are: several op rods really out of wack, a bolt so packed with debris that the firing pin would not move and a bolt that did not close on GO gage. I have either been able to correct the issue myself or they gladly took it back and made the correction, so they still are the place to go to, but I wouldn't take any rifle directly to the range without a good inspection, cleaning and lub..

Love the M14, I have three of them. One of the things I don’t like about it is that the stock fitment will affect the functioning of the gun. The rotating trigger guard latch is really all that holds the stock, receiver and trigger pack together. I bought a replacement chassis stock for one of mine, and remarked how little effort it took to rotate the trigger guard latch into the assembled position. During test firing, after a few rounds fired I would get a failure to feed. I then noticed the trigger guard had rotated out of position. i was able to fab a couple of shims from an old credit card, and tighten up the stock fit. That seemed to fix the problem.

When I rebarrled mine, and asked questions on the CMP Forum, as well as looked online at/from reputable sources, I was told M1 Garand parts were made to be interchangeable so they could be repaired/fixed in the field or back at base. I didn’t have a video when I took the extractor and ejector out to do the go/no-go checks. That one appeared to go a lot farther on the no-go gauge then mine did. I too replaced it with a period correct bolt. I also have the trigger housing that is perilous correct that I’m hoping to someday brave and change over! Thanks again for the video. It lets me know that even though I checked online and hacked and rechecked and rechecked, it reaffirms that I did it correctly.

Ah yes, correcting a Garand. The beginning of a domino effect that may keep you searching for years. Good luck, you’ll need it Mike. Anyone who reads this who is considering attempting to correct a Garand, made prior to 1943 primarily - don’t. You can have a whole other Garand, two, even three, for what you’ll spend IF you find the parts you need. If your rifle came originally with a Type I lockbar sight, flush nut sight, SA GHS stock: forget it and find a 1944 and up to do if you really want to do it.
