PORTO, PORTUGAL - Porto is one of the sandwich capitals of the world and today we’re going on an ultimate Portuguese street food sandwich tour to show you some of the best sandwiches in the city!
Huge thank you to Taste Porto (tasteporto.com/) for taking me on this incredible tour - they are the best! Thank you André Apolinário and Ricardo Brochado, it was amazing to hang out with them. Check them out for incredible food tours in Porto.
Here’s everything we ate on this Porto food tour:
Casa dos Presuntos “Xico” (maps.app.goo.gl/s8FzyXEkCbG9d...) - This place is famous for their Presunto - a Portuguese dry cured ham, and their Salpicão - Smoked sausage with wine and paprika, which was fantastic.
O Astro (maps.app.goo.gl/Wt9YkkMvTFr6K...) - Legendary family run restaurant known for their Bifana - a classic Portuguese pork sandwich, where the pork is thin sliced and poached in their special chili laced oil and seasoning.
Cervejaria Gazela (maps.app.goo.gl/mRHkeocdLXX8x...) - The Cachorrinho is sometimes referred to as the Portuguese hot dog, but it’s much different - it includes bread with butter layered in sausage, hot dog, and cheese and then griddle fried and then brushed with more butter and drizzed in piri piri oil. It’s something truly amazing!
Casa Guedes Tradicional (maps.app.goo.gl/hMp8VVUD135Pa...) - Continuing on this Portuguese street food tour we stopped at yet another legendary sandwich spot to try their melt in your mouth Sandes de Pernil - Roasted pork sandwich.
Casa Expresso (maps.app.goo.gl/tDFFKwKrhdL6A...) - We then headed to Rojão for their famous braised pork sandwich!
O Golfinho (maps.app.goo.gl/AfJqMWvBopt3Y...) - Finally on this tour we tried the king of all Portuguese sandwiches - The Francesinha - which is a massive sandwich filled with meat, cheese, and drenched in a secret sauce. If that’s not enough, you pour fries into the gravy - it’s one of the world’s greatest sandwiches!
Thank you again to André and Ricardo from Taste Porto (tasteporto.com/)!

I ate at the original Gazela the day that Anthony Bourdain passed away. He was a big influence on me going to Portugal and I remember feeling heartbroken walking in and sitting down at the bar. The guys poured me a beer, passed me a sandwich drizzled in that amazing chili oil and with the first bite I felt a warmth and comfort I will never forget. With tears running down my face one of the cooks asked me if it was ok, I responded yes! Then I just said Tony’s name. The cook pointed over my shoulder at a picture of Anthony sitting in the same spot I was sitting and we laughed and taped icy cold glasses of beer in his memory. It was a moment I will never forget.

actually one of the key ingredients in an explosively good dish is to keep it simple, not overcomplicate things....even the best chefs in the world will say the same on most dishes, there are exceptions of course, but as a rule of thumb, keep it simple..

@@silver_surfer88 the food in Portugal is good, yes, but I have a feeling of stopping in time, not experimenting anymore, the old doesn't need to cease to exist for new things to come, I think that's what makes Portuguese food not have as much relevance in the world, it's lacking innovate, and a little marketing

@@dnkroz_music There's plenty of new restaurants around Portugal that combine older recipes with and ingredients to make new dishes that didn't exist for example 20 years ago. These places are not tavern type "street food" yet the food is exceptional! Italy for example is far more bound by tradition and stuck in time than Portugal for food yet it is consistently considered atop world food rankings... Undeservedly in my opinion.

I'm Portuguese, so I want to add some things: We usually cook the collards in the caldo verde. Serving it raw, I guess it's something specific from that tavern. On the pot, at Casa Expresso, there were papas de sarrabulho and he said they're made with meat, not wheat. It's a type of porridge made with pig's blood, meat and corn flour. I'm a big girl and that was enough food for a couple of days. 😆 I don't know how you do it. I'm glad you enjoyed our food. You made me very hungry! Welcome to Porto, everyone!

I miss Europe so much. This video made me cry. Those sandwiches are such a work of art!!!!! There are people in the U.S who can make such sandwiches. UNFORTUNATELY, the average person in the U.S has no appreciation for such luxury. Which means that the world of sandwiches in the U.S is in limbo. It will take years for the average person in the U.S to be like the Portuguese seeing their food as a national treasure. Micah is such a grandma magnet. Ying has been so welcomed where ever she goes. You, Ying and Micah have been developing an extended family on an International level. Your videos are helping people adjust to the idea of travel. When friends of mine ask me who to watch, I point them to your videos. When my friends came back to the U.S, they told me that when they would drop your name, their faces light up, and my friends were treated so well. This makes your videos sort of a letter of introduction.

Mr. Wiens, once again, you hit a grand slam with this great video. I have had the privilege of knowing Portuguese people throughout my life. And eating at a 🇵🇹 restaurant growing up in the DMV. The Franceshina in one of the greatest sandwiches ever!! Had it once. Loved it!! Definitely wanna visit 🇵🇹 someday!!

What a great tour you did! I'm from Lisbon, Portugal, but my heart (I mean, my stomach) belongs to Porto. I really love the food and the people from that city, I used to catch a flight all the time (20€ for both ways) by myself, just to go visit the city. I made really good friends and keep the sweetest memories. I wish I could get a bite from a sande de pernil right now.
