BATTICALOA, SRI LANKA - After visiting Kandy and Central Sri Lanka, we drove to the East coast of Sri Lanka, and first to Batticaloa, a wonderful city surrounded by lagoons. Ruzaina arranged for us to meet up with the Sri Lanka Special Forces to cook lunch and eat in their mess hall, but it turned out to be more of an adventure than just that!
We arrived to the Special Forces base camp, and they were already cooking the meal for lunch. But also our plan for the day was to buy a fish and cook a big fish, so the Captain called his fisherman friend, and he had a special type of shark (which is commonly eaten in Sri Lanka) and said it was his favorite. So we ended up getting the shark to cook and share with the entire Special Forces unit. We ended up missing the main lunch, but we had lunch in the General's office instead with the delicious mix of local dishes and the addition of the shark curry. It was a privilege to have this opportunity.
Sri Lankan Batticaloa food - In the evening we were invited to a local home in Batticaloa to eat a typical regional Batticaloa Sri Lankan food meal. The meat blew me away with the flavors and ingredients, and it was my first time to eat mountain knotgrass, which was delicious.

Mark is a nice guy . He’s always with his family traveling all over the world . His experience with different cultures and food lives with his family which is very special. Every time I watch his videos I always get educated on different kinds of food and the different cultures of regions . Your success comes from the type of person you are . I’ve never heard of Sri Lanka in my life until now. Sadly, with the bombings i did hear about this place in a very negative way, however mark brings in the best way to show a beautiful place with beautiful people who share their delicious food. I now know more of Lanka thru the people and food . It’s been a pleasure seeing all the videos of Lanka thru food in a positive order and very educational as I mentioned earlier. My blessings to every single person in Sri Lanka . I promise to learn more of this beautiful place in another way , now that I was able to see the food side , thanks to mark. They are so generous, open their doors to total strangers and labor for hours to serve them a home cooked meal that more than likely they themselves have no access to every day. People are awesome!

I was in srilanka days before the attack happened . Regional camp that you are having lunch is not Sri Lanka Army. It is Sri Lanka Police Special Task Force. You are right they are very respected in the country.
