Despite of the small size, Taiwan holds a great variety of breakfast culture from city to city, even from township to township, and it surprises me every time even as a Taiwanese. There's this picture book titled Taiwan Breakfast Map (台灣早餐地圖)that can really help spotting the differences (not sure if the book has an English version though). Hi!! So glad you like our street food!! One quick reminder on 2:28 the text card says 護角餅 but it is actually 胡椒餅(it has really similar phonetic sounding lol) which literally means pepper bun. it’s a small savoury sesame bun, with a hot, peppery and green onion beef/pork filling. Anyway thanks for your video amd efforts :)

Another origin of the name Chicken Roll is that chicken in the Taiwanese language sounds like "the leftovers" and people used to wrap whatever that's left in tofu skins and deep fry them. So in Taiwanese, it's actually "The leftover roll". Another amazing video. Thank you for visiting Taiwan Mark.

Another explanation is that the name "雞捲" came from Taiwanese. In Taiwanese, it sounds like "多ke 捲kueh" which means to put the extra ingredients in rolls. People make 雞捲 to avoid waste.

Well said, Mark! With that being said, you really ought to visit Tainan. As matter of fact, Tainan was the capital of Taiwan hundred of years ago, it's the core of Taiwanese cuisine with more traditional dishes that Taipei does not have. Taipei on the other hand, has more of an international vibe because of being the current capital of Taiwan and more accessible to the rest of the world. But if you really want to discover more Taiwanese dishes, Tainan has a lot more to offer.

@commenter4898
@commenter4898 11 ай бұрын
@@johnyang2 Very different. In Taipei there is pavement on all main streets, and in alleys there is now an area pained green for pedestrians. In Tainan most streets either don't have any pavement or the pavement is occupied by outdoor kitchen and motorcycles, so you have to walk on the motorway. In Taipei the traffic usually follows the traffic rules and would try to yield to or bypass the pedestrian. In Tainan the cars and motorcycles just expect pedestrians to yield to them and often don't follow the traffic rules. Taipei has good public transit, with their metro often ranked world #1 in user satisfaction. Tainan only has some bus lines and they are not very good.

Hi Mark, thanks for returning to your roots. Been watching your videos all the way from when you had long hair and toured around Africa. One of the things I sometimes missed was you sampling popular no frills street food

These are all traditional daily food for Taiwanese . If you expect N super delicious taste , you might feel a little disappointed but it’s ok for its price because all these food aren’t from high end restaurant

I love watching your videos and appreciate how well-researched and informative they are. I just got back from a 2-week trip in Taiwan and I would like to caution your viewers about the Dadaocheng Cisheng Temple (the last spot featured in this video). While I think it is definitely a worthwhile visit to see the environment, the varieties of local cuisine, and the social community happening, in order to order food and navigate the scene Chinese verbal and reading skills are definitely needed. I am Chinese American with a very small grasp of Mandarin, and I could not navigate ordering here. The only stall that was accessible was the Chicken Roll stall which you featured, and those vendors were very nice. The tables in the courtyard are all reserved for specific vendors, and if you can't read Chinese, it is very difficult to tell which vendor it is. They did not seem open to having a variety of food from different places on any table. We were shooed off more than one table, even though we tried to order from the vendor who approached us with a menu. And then we tried to eat our chicken roll by sitting on a side wall near a Banyan tree. We were also shooed off there, somewhat unceremoniously, which unfortunately left us overall with a feeling that it was a hostile environment. We went on a Friday around lunch time and another thing to note is that there are a lot of mopeds moving in and out of the lane in front of the stalls which can also make navigation/safety a little tricky.
