HONG KONG - Today we’re eating legendary seafood in Hong Kong, including the original Typhoon Shelter Crab!
Huge thank you to Virginia for helping me arrange this Hong Kong food tour. Check out her videos @hongkongfoodtours and her food tours: humidwithachanceoffishballs.com/
Ap Lei Chau Market (maps.app.goo.gl/AnU9QghRLHsBT...) - To begin this Hong Kong seafood tour we started off at Ap Lei Chau Market where we bought some fresh seafood before going upstairs to the food court. There’s an amazing restaurant at the top where they will cook your seafood, and it’s as fresh as possible, and extremely delicious.
Hing Kee Restaurant (maps.app.goo.gl/GdFtni2BgX6QD...) - We met up with Eugene, at his family restaurant where. His Grandfather originally cooked crab on a boat in Hong Kong harbor, and they made the original Hong Kong Typhoon Shelter Crab. The recipe has since evolved into a mountain of fried crispy garlic, but to my surprise the original recipe is mainly based on fermented black bean sauce. You have try both versions!
Sampan Boat Restaurant - Finally Virginia we had one more seafood restaurant this time, on a boat with the typhoon shelter of Hong Kong to get a glimpse of the real history.

Spoke to my parents last night, reminiscing about when we lived in Hong Kong (Kowloon Tsai) back in '77 to '79. We lived in a place which I think is now called Beacon Hill, which was off Cornwall Street, though the street names might have changed. We had a 3 bedroom apartment on the third floor of Exeter House, the first block of apartments up quite a steep hill. The fishman would knock on our door most week's on a particular day, carrying his wares on the classic baskets supported by a bamboo stave over his shoulder. He would fillet your fish on your doorstep, with a big smile. The school had a swimming pool, which we would swim in after school most days, given the weather was pretty warm all year round. Lion Rock, Ocean Park, Star Ferries, Dragon boat races in the harbour, lots of great memories, I haven't yet been able to revisit since, but it is definitely on my bucket list.

Hi Sean. It was called Beacon Hill even then! I went to Beacon Hill school and lived off Warwick Road. No swimming pool back then in 1978, but the secondary school, King George V had one!
@SeanHendy
@SeanHendy 24 күн бұрын
@@plr46 St Andrews School was the primary school, (I think the secondary school was St Georges) walking distance from the bottom of the hill, and most definitely had a swimming pool as I learned to swim in it. We might be in the same area, but talking about different things.

From the steamed fresh fish with scallions & soysauce to the fried crabs with garlic saturated with that incredible black bean sauce is out of this world satisfying. The last restaurant displayed had me warming up last night's leftovers because my stomach literally couldn't bear no more lol. Omgoodness!! What a Saturday morning sensation!! This was a outstanding episode on some of the best seafood the culinary world has to offer honestly. Thanks Mark so much for your constant astronomical content us foodies dearly enjoy!! Safe travels & many blessings to you and your family always!! Thanks again my friend!! Cheers!! 😋🦀🦐🦪🍻

I love fish in different cooking styles: baked, fried, stewed, curried and now after looking at this I'll add steamed. I noticed how Hong Kong cuisine seems to used spices and seasoning but it looks to me like a milder flavored version of Asian style cooking.

She replied with………same exact face, same exact reactions and why does he let his family wait so long to eat. She says he’s very selfish making them wait till food is cold to eat cause he wants to make sure the video doesn’t miss his same reaction to similar near eats based off past knowledge by looking over my shoulders 🥺
