I've just bought 2 of those and I live in the UK. They are about 27.20 Canadian dollars each so about £16.00. you can't complain as the basic knives are around the £8-10 mark. For the extra features it's a win as this kind of knife is brilliant for throwing into a pack, toolbox or back of a car.

I bought one of these a few years ago and have never loved a knife more ( modified the sheath though,;cut the top off the plastic bit and sowed the remainder to the nylon loop). Sold my more premium knives (fallkniven, Peltonen and terävä) and kept this, it suits me more. A very underrated performer in the bushcraft world and a knife you could bet your life on in a pinch. I know SK5 steel is considered cheap but it's so easy to sharpen and so tough, I just can't find fault it.

It is a surprisingly good knife! I used stones to put a true Scandinavian grind edge on it then stropped a convex secondary bevel.... lightsaber sharp. Probably my favorite wood carver and despite the scandi edge, I wonder how it would do field dressing a deer.... 🤔

Thanks for the review, Mark! I've got (as one reactor calls them) "hobbit hands", so handle size wouldn't be a problem for me on any of the knives. This one's price is more back to normal on Amazon in the US, considerably less than the Canadian price - just under $30 USD, so about 1.5 times the price of the GK for me. It might make a good backup, but for now I'll be sticking with my gifted Mora Kansbol.

My traditional bushcraft knives are the Mora bushcraft/companion (here in Europe about 50/22 EUR) but then I found the cheaper Hultafors`s and tried them (GK/OK4= 10/26 EUR) with good results! Now my option for batoning and heavier tasks is the GK (to spare my more expensive Mora), and for the other Tasks I use the Mora companion or the Hultafors OK4, which work very well at a very reasonable cost-benefit rate (I do not see the point to spend more) Besides these knives I usually carry my machete for the big tasks and some Swiss army knife/Opinel for the finer tasks and food prep. I love Opinel for its simplicity! and lately I found a good alternative in the Portuguese Jose Da Costa folding knives (Merendeira model), which are also very good looking!

The GK in the 'bushcraft' edition is the OK1. What you have is the OK4. The GK has been the knife in use for the Bushcraft Association since 2011. I agree the handle of the GK can be bulky for small hands where the handle of the HVK and RFR can be just a bit small for extra large hands. These rubber overmold handles do provide some extra grip that I don't need but are much harden to clean. So to me these OK knives are not worth the extra money but that's personal.

G'day Mark, I didn't realise they had as many models, thanks for showing them mate. No stainless variants ? Well at least there is an option for a larger belt, though I like the reverse clip idea, just longer. A bit extra tang never hurts, but not sure why one would want a ruler on ones blade. I'm with ya, I like the handle material, though whack it on the larger model. Cheers Duke.

You hit the nail on the head, I have smaller hands so the hds handles swamp my hand but the OK4 is just about perfect, I got mine for £15 (30 Loonies) a few years ago which is not a bad price. The paint doesn't flake off the blade over time but does wear down. It's a very reliable knife to stick in a pack, it will do most jobs and won't break the bank if it goes walkabout. If I was ultra fussy the sheath was made of thinner plastic than the dedicated craftsmans knives, why? Maybe they've put this right by now?

Hi Mark, Nice review of a nice knife. However, how does it stack up against the more robust bushcraft knives? Also, like a Mora, it has a stick tang (a serious No-No to the bushcraft Gurus), and no lanyard hole. Also it doesn't seem to be a Scandi grind! Ouch. But, as you demonstrated, the knife is perfectly capable of doing the lighter varieties of bushcraft tasks or work, using appropriate material and not getting overly ambitious. Now, I have a challenge for you! Victorinox has just launched a new dedicated bushcraft fixed blade knife series called the Venture, which I think is a VERY interesting newcomer to the genre! It is a knife which emerged from the skill and experience of Felix Immler (ref) and he had a large input into the various new design features incorporated in the design and production of this knife. Without going into the details, my challenge to you is to get hold of one and do an in-depth test and review of this new bushcraft knife. I'd be fascinated to hear what you think!
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft Жыл бұрын
No need to challenge me. I am already looking to get the new Victorinox. In my opinion, what most "Bushcraft Gurus" are describing is a survival knife, not a bushcraft knife. Thanks for commenting

@@gingerhansen1902 You couldn't be righter, @gingerhansen , the OK 4S is the fulfillment of his fantasies. However, why wait on the North American market to play catch-up, or, go cap-in-hand to Hultafors, when he could just make friends with some online European bushcrafting forumites and arrange to do a purchase and delivery? I happen to know that the Hultafors OK 4S is broadly available in (at least) Poland and Italy. Everywhere Hultafors knives are sold, over there, the market is fully infused and the OK 4S easily and broadly available.
