this is my favourite scene in the entire film, Marla has always been knocked for her looks, even though she's always been so pretty. and finally someone sees her as she really is, and falls in love with her. to find out she had a long and happy married life with a man who adored her from the first moment is heartwarming

Marla was an amazing character in the movie. This scene was funny and touching in a lot of ways. Sort of the ugly duckling finding her swan moment. I loved at the end of the movie when they reunited and she was unrecognizable. And the scene in the beginning with her dad was priceless.

There are scene stealers, and there are scene AMBUSHES. Don't blame the guy, I'm in love with Marla! this and the finishing school scenes are legit laugh-out-loud no matter how many times you see it. (and realized what an early influence this character was on me, my comedy, esp my comedy characters who are often misfits/ mock conventional women's sexuality expectations etc).

Penny Marshall did a great job directing this film. Tom Hanks is great as always but just watching women be genuinely funny in scenes like this without feeling like it's a cheap setup. Such a great film.
