@@riel4553 Not necessarily. This is how I think it goes. They get people like Marnie. Far gone and at the end of their rope, and indoctrinate them to the cult. They legitimately turn their lives around and grow them spiritually and internally. These handful of people with legitimate problems become the representatives of the cult. But the people they bring in are the ones who pay all that money. So when Marnie says "what price do u put on enlightenment" Marnie doesn't need to be paid coz she's just happy to turn a new leaf, and share the enlightenment with other "lost" souls. Because her story is legit, the target sees that and forks over the money. Eventually the "lost souls" feel found and don't mind spending the money or doing anything cult like because it gives them purpose. Also what's money anyway, the point is enlightenment. At the end of the day, the lost souls have been scammed, the legitimate ones like Marnie become the ropers and enforcers for free and the guy on top sits atop a *pyramid* of money. Not only that, he doesn't have to pay most them, bypasses the govt completely (no taxes) and doesn't even put his image on the line for it. He's a good person without even having to actually do anything good. It all starts on the backs of a few individuals like Marnie. That's my theory

@@jjthe13th The closest I got to a cult/scam, they had a few 'Marnies' on the inside that said things like "pay or don't pay, it makes no difference to me! You're the one missing out!" And then there were the Marnies trying to get in that were told to get the money by whatever means possible. The insiders even said "you don't have any money? You are smarter and more capable than you think!!!! You can get 700 dollars in the next 3 days if you really apply yourself!!! Think of your future!!!" For most people that meant asking for loans. I left when they asked for 200 dollars at the end of the first talk. I just hope I wasn't the only one. A couple of Marnies called me later, worried about me 'missing out'. I heard months later that the outside Marnies were not living their best life, now that the banks were after them.

I tend to agree with this, and I am not totally mad at the arc they gave her, but I will push back a little. The only reason its a tad jarring is because of the email she sent Niko. How she was happy, clean, healthy, with plenty of stuff to look forward to. Never once mentioned a religion, but mentioned her education. While also saying her parents were treating her well. Like she had insane optimism, with little reason not to believe it. If the last we heard from her was getting on the plane, and never got the email from her, than this arc would make much more sense. Of course, things could have happened after that email, but we as the player don't know at all. So its an odd jump of Niko helping her in a serious way, her leaving and giving Niko and the player closure that she was on her way to a fulfilling life. The email didn't come off as simply hopeful, it seemed she had it all figured out. Just to get to GTA 5 and she is completely looney and in a cult. lol But this is the same GTA who did Johnny completly wrong as well. lol imo. GTA has always been willfully outrageous, but the characters in GTA 5 are almost cartoonish in comparison to 4.

Story wise it makes sense she would fall into the clutches of a cult, but there are different routes Rockstar could have chosen for her to tread that makes sense, but they didn't as the overall narrative of GTA 5 is about cynical mockery of life, not of people being triumphant over their shortcomings. Marnie's story writing is sound, I just despise the message of it.
