I use these verges very often and they have made a big improvement in there system over the last few years, they used to be garbage but much better now. Although the fixing kit at the bottom is v v flimsy and the little mettle clip pops out of the socket very easily so I prefer to drive a 100 mm screw with a cap on to fix first verge. Also mention when battening up at the top make sure your nail heads are covered by your end cap as on this video the left hand side one wasnt👍

I suppose times have changed along with regulations, and I'm all for it, it is for the better on most occasions. However me being old skool love the look of a well pointed verge! Nice demo.

I agree with you and I would go for a mortar bed with smaller tiles and slates. I reckon with a bit of SBR in the mix they hold down well.

I fit guttering and I'm always been called out to 'guttering leaks' on houses with a dry verge system. The wind drives the rain water under the verge and it streams out the bottom missing the gutter. I normally have to fit a 90 angle and silicone the gap up. NHBC interfering and creating new problems.
@user-tp2ks4ts2i
@user-tp2ks4ts2i 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. I agree with you. The edging stops behind the gutter so any water that gets under slate runs down and rots timber. The edge should have an overhanging lip the same as the slate si water goes into gutter. I would safely say that majority of houses using trim have rotten timbers but wont be seen for ten to fifteen years. Im talking about all types especially valley trim.

Bisby to the rescue again! I thought 'I'll just replace these rotten bits of fascia and soffit' - of course, first thing I find when I get up on the scaffolding is that the mortar at the verge is rubbish and loose. I knew dry verge systems like this existed, now I know everything else about them I need to know. Now to try to source some on a Saturday afternoon...

I use these all the time over the old way but for the first cap I drive a dry ridge screw with the rubber seal in about 100mm from the front and also to fix the ridge cap just a better fixing than a nail

Alot easier than being in the pissing down rain and halfway up to heaven eh Roger? Nice vid. You get any footage of a dry ridge system?

Of course the preliminary step is to set out the roof tile rows so that if you are tiling from one verge to another, i.e. with a straight up-and-over roof, you don't need to cut the end tiles to fit - I've seen many jobs where so called roofers have had to cut the opposite verge end tiles and of course then they are difficult to secure and look wrong. As you lay from right to left of course this only affects the left hand verge. On this video, a right hand verge, the interlock channels are on the underside and don't show. The advantage with this Dry fit system is that with Marley tiles, who don't make a specific left hand verge tile, it hides the ugly interlock channels otherwise visible on the upper face left hand edge

Mate,,your talking a load of bollox, a bedded gable is far more capable of surviving strong winds than these shitty plastic gable fixing,,I have been a slater over 43 years and I know when a gable I’d bedded on properly from the start it will last as long as the roof without ever pointing,, one more thing, that tacky ridge cap should not be exposing the fixing nail,
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder Жыл бұрын
The ridge cap was explained and all the evidence is that bedded verges are not as weather resistant as the dry verge. If you are the exception then good for you but most people bed ridges and verges on really strong sand and cement and it cracks as it will. I have used SBR with great effect but not many people do that.

Good wee video bought them for my garage build only to find it never came with the fixing kit no bother I thought onto internet to 2 of the big online suppliers (their first on Google's search list). Two different prices by some margin £14 & £8.44 so went for the cheaper get to checkout to discover postage was £75 shocking I thought it was a mistake contacted company no not a mistake comes direct from Marley and they set the postage, outrageous how can they justify such postage I could have hired a taxi to go and pick them up cheaper, to say I'm outraged would be an understatement. By the way the other company wanted £90 postage.

Looks nice and neat. I was up our loft today getting the Christmas tree down and noticed a damp patch on the chipboard floor. Turns out the wind is forcing rain through the tile vent. Do we have to have these things, it's a modern slate type tile vent. They look shite from outside anyway and if these things are letting rain on through the vent I consider them a waste of time.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 3 жыл бұрын
I have never liked those flat vents. I had some and took them out for that very reason. The loft is still dry.

I wouldn’t call the ridge cap elegant - i think they look cheap and nasty, they also discolour over time , its another skilled job taken away and replaced with “easy”
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
If you asked me if I would put this on my house the answer is no but on a modern house on an estate of similar properies the one that would look out of place would be the bedded verge.

Best way to do it is pull the cement and verge cloak out, then cut the battens back 3 rafters and add new ones into place so you know you have a solid fixing point🙂

it depends on the angle of the pitch, The manufacturers always give a headlap figure based on pitch. 50mm is common

I thought you had to put metal clips over the end of the batons to stop them splitting.

The clip is an option. There are several ways of doing it. I use graded battons and screws in the end grain.

There's nothing wrong with sand cement if its done correctly with half soft and half sharp sand and cement. It will last longer than this plastic crap in my opinion. There's one thing shilling this dry verge but you shouldn't be saying cemented verge and undercloak isn't any good because it's simply not true. Dry fix ridge is good but I don't like that cheap nasty plastic verge.
@SkillBuilder
@SkillBuilder 11 ай бұрын
Alex When I say it is no good, this is a simple fact. It has been tested extensively and it cracks after a few years which lets moisture creep in. You then get frost lifting the verge and in a high wind the verge will come off. I don't like the plastic either but it stays put in a hurricane. It may be that you can knock up a magic mix but nobody knows how good it is until it fails. This is the problem with the building industry....too many variables.
@Alexxx---101
@Alexxx---101 11 ай бұрын
@@SkillBuilder I've been roofing for 25 years and I know for a fact that a cement verge lasts more than a few years! Maybe they last a few years if some bodgey builder does it in soft sand and doesn't know what he's doing. I'm not the only roofer that disagrees with you, this topic has been discussed many times on master roofers and majority think that you're talking nonsense. As far as your magic mix comment goes, roofers have been putting sharp sand in there muck for years.
