Love, love, love the extra info you always give! Teaching how to recognize stitches helps build confidence in knitters. The more confident the knitter the more enjoyment they get from knitting. Even finding it cathartic, which is a great health benefit. 😉

I struggle with my arthritis and my skinny slippery needles and I haven’t given up just to let you know and I really appreciate your videos so much. I am about to embark on my first pair of socks. I have been watching videos all day, trying to decide which creator to go with. Looks like you win the prize. I have been fighting not to ever have to use magic loop, but trying to knit socks in the round with those shortie Chiaogoo needles (although I love my Chiaogoo sets!) and that dinky cable, well, just watching the videos for those makes my hands cramp. And the less said about 3-4 DPNs the better. I'm an older person who just picked up knitting again last year, after having learned just the basics in grade school (50 years ago).Thanks for the plain sock videos and the pattern! I figured if I could knit clogs, I could tough out a sock. My next milestone was going to be a sweater, but my sweater yarn seems to have gotten lost in the mail, and my sock yarn is here. My neighbor got me back into knitting, and now my house looks like a yarn factory exploded in it. LOL!

This is so helpful. I started a pair of toe-up socks about 10 years ago, but as an inexperienced knitter, struggled with understanding some of the instructions, especially the heel. I gave up. Last week I found a video for a cuff down sock, and decided to try it, but I got extremely frustrated. I think I’m going to try your method... sorry that I missed your knit along.

Hi Marly, so I just finished knitting my first pair of socks watching a different video. The socks fit until I binded off...groan. So I’m going to take them down and start the ribbing another time. I knitted on a 2.5mm circular and I knit quite tight. I think my biggest problem is with the formula and not really getting it. Funny, I actually used the same KROY sock yarn you had in the video, CLOVER. I found the yarn quite heavy, but I’m going to give it another go after Ive watched this video. Thank you.

i have a question on the 9 inch circular. if my sock size is 8 or 8.5 in circumference, but the circular is 9 inches..does it stretch the stitch gauge since you mentioned we should have a tight gauge for socks. I bought one to try it out just knitted in the round. My stitches are much looser compared to the swatch i knitted using regular circular needles..

Question to Marly, I’ve been knitting for a couple years now, so forgive the question if obvious to some. Am I to understand that circulars are the 9” - 12” inch needles and the needles that are longer and connected are called magic loop and are not what knitters refer to circulars? I’m a big fan of Dpn’s, a fan tried and true, it’s what I learned on by following all of your KAL’s, socks, sweater, cheery slippers. Blessings to you and yours.
@MarlyBird

I've been trying to knit socks for a few years. Slipping sts and picking them up is a nightmare. I've tried using a smaller needle and knitting on the tips of the needles, I'm knitting a pair toe up at the moment. I've just finished increasing for the gusset. The sts are nice and snug, so I knit across the first row of the heel turn, I reach the ssk and my sts start stretching and I have no idea why. I have undone so many socks and I'm about to undo another one resolving wraps is a huge headache for me too. I've watched so many videos I'm confused now.

I’m using speckled yarn and like the colors on needle 2/sole stitches better. I haven’t done any shaping yet, so is it possible to change needle 1 to be sole stitches and needle 2 to be instep stitches? If I just knit 1 full round to change needle positions & move the start of round marker, it should be fine right??? Or is there a reason why needle 1 *has* to be for instep/needle 2 *has* to be for sole?? Sorry for the long question. I tried google first but just kept getting sock patterns. And this is my first sock/shaped garment (besides triangle shawls) as a self taught knitter, so I’m not 100% sure what I’m actually doing until I’ve already done it. ~.~

@MarlyBird

Think about the lean of the stitch. Because a “right handed” knitter is working from right to left we do the right slanting/leaning increase first, whereas a “left hand” knitted is working left to right so they do the left slanting/leaning increase first. Does that help?

I’ve learned to do German short rows I knit very very very big and my sock is coming out to look like it’s going to fit Godzilla I don’t swatch because I don’t know how to well I know how to. I just don’t know how to read it and to figure out what I’m supposed to do with it once I’m thing finished with it, howeverI’m already using a size 2 needle how much further down a needle can I go in order to make a better fitting sock or do I use less cast on stitches? I’m so flabbergasted right now I’m not sure what to do first.

At around 20:25, the stitches being put on the cord are the stitches closest to us and the knitter, but around 31:54 the stitches that are being put on the cord are the one furthest from us and the knitter. Does this change the right side and wrong side of the work?

When you rotate the sock you always keep the stitches on the needle closest to you. I did the same thing at both time stamps.

@@MarlyBird I'm sorry, but I still don't get this. What you said here is how I learned Magic Loop. But when you did the cast on and worked on the blue sample, you were always pulling the front (bottom) needle out to work the stitches on the back (top) needle, you continued to do it through the lifted increases, but when you switched to the green sample, you were doing it the opposite direction which is the normal Magic Loop.

Does anyone know if Cloudborn Alpaca Worsted Weight yarn is good for socks? I can't seem to find anything about it. Thank you :)
@CassieDA17
@CassieDA17 4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t use 100% alpaca for socks. Typically sick yarn has 15-25% nylon which makes them sturdier to wear. Also worsted weight will make pretty bulky socks - probably ok for wearing like slipper socks but not good to wear with shoes.

I made alpaca yarn socks. They were and I mean were as in the sense of being no longer wearable, so soft and comfy the 2 times I wore them. The heel got very fuzzy and then I forgot what fiber they were and threw them in the dryer!!!!!😬😢😢😢😢😢 I do think that the heel would not have lasted very long and agree that a nylon and wool combo is better. Maybe you could find an alpaca, nylon, wool combination.

Marly: I need your help. I'm new to magic loop and new to Judy's Magic Cast-on and maybe trying to get a handle on both at the same time is a mistake. I'm usually a pretty savvy knitter, but this is confusing the heck out of me. Here is my issue. In Magic Loop, once you have cast on the stitches and split them onto the two needles, you start by pulling out the Top (back) needle, and then work across the stitches on the Bottom (front) needle, basically resulting in working around the stitches in a clockwise direction (which is the same that would happen is you were knitting in the round as you normally would.) But once you've cast on using JMCO, to work the first round you pull out the Bottom (front) needle and then work across the stitches on the Top (back) needle, basically working in a counterclockwise direction. I've watched a bunch of videos and no one seems to ever point that out. As I was watching this video I saw that you continued to work in the counterclockwise directions when you started the lifted increases. However, when you switched to the green sample to better show the increases, you were back to working in the traditional clockwise direction, pulling out the Top (back) needle to work the stitches on the Bottom (front) needle. Is there some point where that switch just naturally happens? I can't wrap my head around it. Thanks so much.

Marly: I figured it out!!!!. I know I'm not great with spatial relationships. But I got there. It's that when you first do JMCO and the first few rounds, the tip of the toe is facing you directly, coming at you, but once you get going, you naturally shift the tip of the toe down, instead of at you. So it looks like you are going counterclockwise at first with a different needle because the needles are turned at a 90-degree angle towards you. Once you get going the work is shifted 90 degrees back away from you which then resembles the normal Magic loop. No change in direction, just the work shifted in space.

For my pattern it doesn’t matter because it’s purely based on your foot circumference.

Helen if it helps I’m a size 8 women’s shoe and my foot circumference is 9.5”. I’m sure if you look online you can find charts that translate circumference and length into shoe sizes.

Helen, you can make a variety of sizes as homeless people are all different sizes. So I’m not sure how not putting a label on things makes it so you can knit socks. Please explain.
