Love it or hate it, let's Marmite cake it! Mrs Barry is the biggest fan of Marmite, so I thought I'd treat her today to something a bit different. I tried out two absolutely bizarre Marmite Cake recipes, one sweet one from a recipe suggested on Discord and one savoury. Now I'm no Marmite connoisseur, so it's over to Mrs B for this taste test!
For more crazy recipe tests, check out the Barry Tries playlist: • Barry Tries Playlist
If you want to get involved in the conversation and support me while doing it, the Discord server I mentioned in this video is something all my Patreons get access to! Join now at / mrbarrylewis
If you're brave enough to try the Marmite cakes, the recipes are below:
Savoury Marmite Cake Recipe
250g plain flour
1 tbsp baking powder
200g mature cheddar cheese, grated
4 free-range eggs
125ml olive oil
100ml milk
1 tablespoon plain yoghurt
1 (large) tsp Marmite
Large pinch of salt
Freshly ground black pepper
For the topping:
20g butter, melted
2 tsp Marmite
The first step is to grease the tin, you’ll want a 20cm round cake tin for this recipe. Now put your plain flour and baking powder into a big old bowl, then add 150g of the grated cheese in and reserve the rest.
In a jug, mix together olive oil, milk and yoghurt - this will look a bit weird, but trust the process, folks! Whisk up your eggs in a big bowl, then add in the black pepper, salt and Marmite. Now slowly add in batches of your milky, oily mixture, whisking as you go.
Add in the cheesy, floury combo and whisk until it looks a bit like a coffee cake mixture. Then finally sprinkle the remaining cheese on.
Bake in the preheated oven (180C/350F) for about 30 minutes while you make the topping.
The topping is pretty simple, melt together the melted butter and Marmite. Poke holes in the top of your cake using a skewer then slather on the topping. Serve and…enjoy?!
Sweet Marmite Cake Recipe
Ingredients
100g sugar
140g self-raising flour
10ml baking powder
2ml salt
125ml milk
30ml butter or margarine
2 extra-large eggs
Topping
60g butter or margarine
45ml Marmite
25g finely grated cheddar cheese
This cake uses something called “cake flour” in the recipe, which when I’ve looked it up seems to be self-raising flour, so that’s what we’re going with!
This one starts a bit differently, we start with sugar and “very large” eggs - it truly is a real cake recipe, folks! Beat these together.
For this step, the recipe suggested doing it in a pan on the hob but I used the microwave on little blasts. Heat up your milk and butter until just under boiling point.
While that heats up, fold the flour, baking powder and a shimmy of salt through the egg mixture. Finally fold in the heated up but not boiled milk and butter.
Spoon into your greased tin then bake in a 180C (350F) oven for about 40 minutes.
The topping again here is very simple, melt together the butter and Marmite (here’s where the Marmite finally comes in!), prick the cake gently with a fork, then pour over. Sprinkle the shards of cheese over the top and serve warm!

Oh @MrBarryLewis, we (South Africans) appreciate your willingness to try Marmite Cake. I personally don't like Marmite, but prefer Bovril. The sweet version of Marmite cake is well known and much loved, the savoury version I have never heard of before. Marmite/Bovril is an excellent source of B vitamins and I know of many people that stir a teaspoon full in hot water for a source of energy. Snowflake is a brand of wheat flour that is sold as both All Purpose Flour and then you also get the Self raising flour in the brand. Next you should try our traditional South African Milk Tart..and then Bobotie. But be warned, just like our 11 Official languages, you will find many versions of milk tart and bobotie.

I'm South African and my mother-in-law made a marmite tart. I think the cake you are going to make are the same or very close to it. Her recipe had a bit of sugar in the batter. It was pretty good. Edit. It is the same as my MIL's marmite tart, but she either put it back in the warm oven after adding the cheese or she put the cheese on before the marmite drizzle, because her cheese was more melted into the cake part.

Hey Barry, we had Marmite in the house when I was growing up and I hated it. When I went flatting, my flatmate introduced me to Vegemite. That I can tolerate. It is not nearly as strong when applied sparingly. I usually only eat it with cheese though. I don't know if you can get it in the UK but it would be interesting to try perhaps.

I keep meaning to try marmite; it's not exactly common in my area, but there's usually a British section in the major grocery stores with things like marmite, jaffa cakes, Yorkshire tea, and some very nice jams. I know it'd be good in small amounts as an ingredient - it's basically salty nutritional yeast - but I honestly don't know whether or not I'd like it spread on buttered toast. The general idea of marmite cheese bread sounds delightfully savory, though.
@mytimetravellingdog
@mytimetravellingdog 10 ай бұрын
It's great. Just have a very tiny amount on hot buttered toast to start with. And when I say tiny I mean tiny, almost certainly less than you are thinking. Almost every single stock photo of marmite toast you get when you google marmite on toast is wrong and clearly done by people who don't eat marmite on toast. You want to make the melted butter on toast colour go from bright goldeny of buttered toast to slightly darker goldeny as it mixes with the marmite not covering it with marmite. At that level it really brings out and enhances the flavour and sweetness of the butter giving it much greater depth while also getting the marmite taste. Very minimal amounts on toast etc so it adds and enhances the flavour not just dominates it is probably the best way to eat it (and I will eat it from the jar), certainly for a newbie. It also doesn't have the sort of cheesiness of nutritional yeast. It's powerful salt and umami. It's got more in common with the taste of soy sauce than nutritional yeast (but it's still quite different to that),it's similarly strong and like soy sauce you want it to add and accentuate not dominate flavours most of the time. And marmite has a smoothness and almost sweetness to the taste vegemite (the australian equivalent) does not, that stuff is saltier, sharper and rougher in taste (we have very few ways to describe taste so I don't know if that makes sense).
@tildessmoo
@tildessmoo 10 ай бұрын
@@mytimetravellingdog To be fair, I like peppers dipped in doenjang, which from what you're saying, I might call kind of like Korean marmite. It's... well, so soy sauce is basically the brine from pickled soy beans, and doenjang is what's left of the soy beans themselves after six months to a year of fermenting. So, yeah, marmite is the remaining solids from fermenting beer, doenjang is the remaining solids from fermenting soy sauce, definitely not the same thing, but pretty similar in concept at least. Huh. Now I want to see if I can swap out the two, doenjang on toast, marmite stew. Now I really have to try marmite so I can have a baseline for experimenting!

South African here. The sweet sponge concoction is called a tea scone in our house. No idea why, but I got the recipe for from my mother-in-law and that's what she calls it. As someone who doesn't like Marmite (it's waaaayyyy too salty and strong for my taste) I do like this cake, but we use way less Marmite (our recipe calls for 50ml of Marmite, so we drop that way down). Also, in SA we have something called Bovril which is similar to Marmite, but less salty and sticky. We often use this instead and it tastes great, but there are Marmite lovers and Bovril lovers and people are divided on this topic. 😂

What part of SA? I spend most of my time visiting Clarens, FS. Marmite is manufactured from brewery ingredients such as yeast and is vegetarian, Bovril is made from beef stock. I grew up with both in the house.

Bovril is British too. Unlike Marmite, which is vegan, Bovril is beef extract paste, so basically super condensed beef stock with yeast extract added. It can be used as a spread but also added to many dishes for umami boost, or as a hot drink.

Hi Barry, love your comical vids, always watch and look toward to new ones from New Zealand, Hmmm, this latest with Marmite is something else, In New Zealand we have marmite made by Sanitarium from a yeast extract, I personally prefer Vegemite which is Australian made product by Kraft, As for British Marmite, have tried it when we have been there and it taste disgusting so not our cup of tea😄

Cake flour is actually low protein flour that's great for cakes as they produce a lighter cake as a result of the lower gluten content

Marmite(/Vegemite/whateverelseitscalledintheworld) is 100% a flavor that if you grew up with it, you love it, and if you didnt, you hate it. I was very much thinking the same sort of thing as Mrs. B when the first one came out of the oven: "It looks like cheese bread".

Just a heads up, I'm an American and did not grow up with it. A foreign exchange student from Australia let us kids try it and I've loved it ever since. I have 2 jars in my house as we speak. I prefer the flavor of marmite over vegemite but the prefer the consitency of vegemite over marmite.

I tried marmite a year ago for the first time and liked it very much. The proper way af course, toasted bread butter and thinest layer of marmite. Tried it because of this channel

Did you know Barry, that the Australian Vegemite (completely different taste to Marmite but nevertheless a rival) was almost called "Parwill"? Why? Because Marmite, but Parwill!!!!!!! Fortunately,. wiser heads prevailed and the world was spared this Dad joke ...

Where do you get sponge flour from, Barry?? Been looking at some great South African recipes but been unsure of what to use in place of their cake flour!

I'm South African - not sure where Barry saw it, but cake flour is not the same as self-raising flour.... you need to add baking powder when using it.

With the utmost respect Barry, I can safely say that those cakes look absolutely awful 😖 😂 I'm definitely not a marmite fan but I'm so glad Mrs B loved them, well one of them a lot more. Plus, we all got to see some hilarious facial expressions from you eating it!😂

Cake flour is low gluten extra fine flour. Self rising flour has baking powder already in it. Totally different things.

I dont know if you guys can get Tescos Yeast Extract, we have it in Ireland its not only cheaper than the real thing, but I swear tastes better than the real McCoy. Its also easier to spread & darker in colour. It tastes like Marmite did a decade r 2 ago, even IF they say it hasnt changed!
