It is so refreshing to see a married couple sticking together with bipolar. My husband was diagnosed with bipolar & borderline personality disorder earlier this year, after MANY years of alcoholism and mental abuse toward our kids, me and himself. I’ve decided to remain a faithful wife and support him but it’s so difficult to find proper support for us as a couple struggling through this journey! Thanks to our faith in God we are managing. Thank you for this video!!

I really felt that when she said she doesn't even know how to describe her life. I'm married 5 years with my BP spouse and I'm still unsure how to describe my life without giving a HUGE backstory. And everyone's response is about the same, since their brains work with "something's wrong, I gotta fix it", we're always told "just stop it, be strong, just do what you have to do". Feels like an endless battle, by my hope is that it's not impossible.

Mike, thank you for opening your life and normalizing this. The stigma on mental health breaks my heart. My husband struggles deeply but is so embarrassed at the mention that he’s experiencing a bipolar episode. This is very helpful! Thank you both!

I’m married for 22 years to a US Marine Corps veteran and he’s bipolar and he doesn’t want to admit it and he doesn’t want to take his medicine for it and it’s really hard for me and our three children. He’s getting very aggressive lately and very irrational. I pray 🙏🏻

I hope and pray that things have gotten better for your family. I feel your pain and worry. I've been with my fiancee for 9 years. We have 4 kids under age of 6. Just before he was diagnosed a month ago I had to ask him to move out of the home. Its been so hard for our family. He turned to alcohol and is living out of a car. I was adamant about him getting help or we would be done. He finally went to the Dr and is now on meds and therapy. So here I am now educating myself. Your not alone. You will have your moments of strength and exhaustion. Stay in prayer and dont lose hope or your faith. I too will be praying for you and your family. 🙏

Im having a similar situation, I pray for you and yours that you got help. My marriage is crumbling and unfortunately open communication isn't there because he shuts down or lashes out. My husband needs to be checked out again to get on medications again. I won't share all of his diagnosis, but one of the main ones is bipolar. Im thankful for this video and for your response. I hope your husband, you and your kids got the needed help

@Sharyn Riley you’re welcome! So glad we could share our story. First I would highly recommend counseling. Sometimes it takes awhile to find the right fit but it is totally worth the investment. Thank you for this video. I’m going through this with my Husband. Do you suggest a support group for the spouses to help us deal with it?

I absolutely suggest a support group. Call the local NAMI and see if there’s meetings in your area. The tendency is to keep it secret or make excuses. Your taking the right steps.

Thank you for this video, my partner of 4 years has bi polar and has an episode every 2 years or so. Do you have any advice for me as I’m coming to an age where it’s almost time to get married and have kids? I’m in a dilemma as I hear horror stories with people married to someone with bipolar and also I’ve heard stories where things were ok

You’re welcome! Glad we could help. A few things come to mind: 1. Make sure he is committed to his medications and other treatment. 2. Ask if you can go to a counselor/psychiatrist apts with him to ask questions so that you can better understand bipolar disorder. 3. Find your own therapist so that you make sure to take good care of yourself 4. Ask him what kind of support he wants from you when he is having an episode-during a time when he is well. 5. Find a supportive friend, family member, or even support group that you can go to in times of struggle. 6. Remember that stress can make symptoms worse so it may impact some of your future decisions. My husband and I have two kids. He is a wonderful father. I wouldn’t change being married to him for anything.

Angela Howard Thank you so much for your fast reply! I really needed that. I’m so glad you and your husband is having a happy life! My partner just had an episode and is in hospital right now.. I wanted to know if you knew any ways of bringing someone experiencing an episode back to reality even a little bit? Or even calming them down? Thank you so much in advance!

@@nicole46880 I think over time my husband learned to trust me when I said “hey, you are not yourself and we might need to see the dr.” While you are not responsible for someone else’s mental health (this is important) you can show compassion while not allowing their bad day to be your bad day. Educating yourself about the illness is so important. This goes for both of you. That will enable you guys to come up with a plan for how to handle the bad times. Being in the hospital is really a chance to find stability and then it’s back to implementing the plan and making sure to follow up with counseling and meds-that needs to be non-negotiable. There’s no magic answer, but making sure you are stable in your own mental health is crucial.

Christians should never be depressed? Lot of charlatans up there in the pulpit! Good job working through this. Other conditions are also not so evident. Helps us rely on others which is really the truth, but not easy. Thanks for sharing!

My husband doesn’t think he has an illness either. He just came out of a two year long major depression and now has major delusions of grandeur - going to save the world, cure covid with his blood, calls FBI to try to get them to come take his blood so he can cure it. Posting all this to Facebook and KZfaq. It’s really sad, embarrassing, and frustrating…nothing can change his mind. He had meds in the past but now refuses them. Hard to know what to do other than I’m probably going to have to leave him 😔
@scuba6797

@@brittanybossence1151 Well he was probably right because of antibodies but also FBI isn't anyone's friend so going to them for help is the only delusional thing. He should at least be careful not to post anything on FB that would embarrass you, since most of the people on there are friends and family. Your last sentence sounds like you have given up, so there must be more to your story. I pray both of you have communicated and worked things out.
