The mission is to collect several samples of rocks, drilled cores, soil, etc, from the Martian surface. They want to find out if any signs of E.T. life can be found in the samples, pretty much just ancient microbial life. Most of the samples came from a dry lakebed that was fed by rivers at some point millions of years ago in Mars. The samples are sealed and stored internally in the rover, waiting for retrieval by a future mission that will bring them back to us. They don't want to take the risk, however small, of a tiny piece of plastic from Earth containing bacterium, contaminating even a single sample, they are all pretty much priceless. If in fact that tiny shred of plastic was to be found inside one of the sample containers it would be useless for the purported study. They really don't want to take any risks whatsoever of potential sample contamination.
