MARS Spanish CETME Sport Preban Rifle Review

Today, we take a look at a rare preban import from the 1960s. Manufactured by CETME in Spain, and sold in the USA by MARS of Chicago, IL; this Sport rifle is of very high quality and shot very well. Shown also in this video are a Springfield Greek SAR-3 (incorrectly labeled as SAR-1 in the subtitle) and Century PTR C308. Speaking of Century, that company has built thousands of CETME Sporters from military surplus parts kits, but comparing the Spanish MARS CETME to one of those is like comparing a Century G3 to an original German HK91. The Spanish really went out of their way to produce a quality rifle for the American market. In the end though, just over 1,250 were imported from 1965 through 1971.

Between 1988 and 1996 I was stationed with the U.S. Navy in Spain at the U.S. Naval Station in Rota, which itself is located on the Base Naval de Rota, which is under the control of Spain's navy and marine corps. Spanish Navy and Marine Corps guys I sometimes worked with used various iterations of the CETME, this one among them. They always had good things to say about their CETME's, but complained about how heavy they were -- overbuilt, they said.

It is certainly reliable and has a softer recoil impulse compared with the German HK G3. This is thanks to a heavier buffer in the stock. Thank you for watching.

Nice video. Point of order, though: it was actually replaced in the mid-80s by the ill-fated CETME L, a 5.56-chambered assault rifle with plastic furniture. I call it ill-fated because despite decent prototypes, the quality of the mass-produced rifles left to be desired (much like the AMELI light machine gun) and the design itself was already obsolete by the time it was issued. The CETME L was replaced by the HK G36. Both models C and L are still in marginal service, mostly for ceremonial purposes.

PatryArmi Fee Yes thanks to HK. And I dare you to prove otherwise and beat me in an argument. The G3 made in partnership with this Spanish organization, and the FN FAL are the same rifle, with some design changes between each model, both were commissioned by German government based on their specifications and and template provided by Mauser. The other Spanish rifles that followed, are based on that project with German government to produce the G3. I am Portuguese and Portugal used the HK G3 as its main rifle for decades

The CETME's roots lay with the STG45(m) developed in Germany at the very end of WWII. After that war, some of the German engineers found themselves guests of the Spanish gov't, and beginning in the early 1950s, they worked with the Spanish engineers at what became CETME to deveop a rollerlocked (delayed) rifle. The first prototypes appeared in 1953-1954, with the Mod. A a short time later. Meanwhile, West Germany was first interested in the FAL, which had been developed by FNH of Belgium starting back in 1947 and based on blueprints dating back to before WWII. In 1955, W.Germany obtained some early FALs, adopting the rifle as the G1 a year later. However for various reasons this arrangement didn't last long, so by 1957-1958, they were in the market for a new rifle. This is when HK & CETME worked together to improve the original Mod. A design. This resulted in the Mod.B which Spain adopted as the Modello.58 and Germany as the G3. Later, CETME would update their rifle to the Mod. C in 1964, while HK would evolve theirs into the G3A3 and so on and on. It is all very interesting and a neat story, cheers.

@@ozarkbeararms8840 I have one of the early Century rifles. When I first fired it, it would double. One trigger pull two bullets fired. The dealer I bought it from had since closed and had moved away. It sat in my closet for quite some time before I decided to get with Century. At first they were reluctant to help me, but when I threatened to go to ATF, they agreed to fix it. Since then, it has performed flawlessly, very accurate and pleasant to shoot.

Never have found firm production numbers for the military's Mod B or Cs. They were kept in service, upgraded to fire 7.62mm NATO. As to standard mag, really there wasn't such a thing back in the '60s. CETMEs used CETME mags, just as G3s used G3 mags, M14s used M14 mags, BM59s used BM59s, and so on. The only half standard might be the FAL, but even there tehre were two different mag designs. At that time, pretty much every nation was still doing its own thing.

The area where the magazine release normally goes is the same part of the receiver that houses the select fire mechanism. In order to be imported this area had to be blocked with a solid block to prevent a relatively easy full auto modification. So the paddle was replaced with a button higher on the lower receiver.

Well you had the 7.62 CETME round originally, but this gave way to a domestic loading of 7.62 NATO in/around 1964. Even Spain's later 5.56 NATO ammunition was made just a tiny bit different from the rest of Europe, but such differences just make collecting and studying these guns that much more interesting.

@Ozark Bear Arms HK is the modern incarnation of Mauser, the CETME model 58/G3 were built on Mauser project, so yes it's HK design, but also CETME cause both organizations co-developed it Both the G3 and the Model 58 are siblings but have their own differences that became more apparent with time, as both companies started making other variations of the G3 and the 58 family respectively. Like the 5.56 version, the HK 33 and the CETME L, that look similar but are different enough to be obvious that are from different manufacturers

OOOOOOOO MAAAAH GAAAAWD!!!! I used these in military service. Loved it. I can take it apart and together with eyes closed. Literally, we trained for that. I was a pretty good shot. We called it "our girlfriends", because we were said to treat it as such, else if it broke we were f*cked. I volunteered for the armoury in my spare time (I was corporal in artillery 105 mm howitzer). Model C, BTW.
