A teenager discovers she's the last person on Earth.
MARTHA is used with permission from Christopher Haydon. Learn more at bluebirdproductions.com.au.
Martha wakes up one morning and gets ready, listening to music, brushing her teeth and cramming in breakfast like any other day. But this is no ordinary day. When she leaves the house she shares with her mother, she realizes that everyone has disappeared, and she is the last person on Earth.
Martha doesn't quite know what to do, spending her time wandering and listening to the last message her mother left on their answering machine. But then she finally encounters the one other person left on earth -- and discovers they are connected in a way that will alter their existences forever.
This intriguing, resonant short drama -- directed by Christopher Haydon, written by Iona Firouzabad and produced by Alexandra Blue -- is equal parts dystopian mystery and coming-of-age story. With exquisite cinematography and camera movement, it has the sweep and propulsion of an existential sci-fi thriller, while the discernment of its performances and writing unfurl a rich set of themes that pay off with a profoundly moving, soulful ending.
Its dramatic situation sets up a quiet film at first, with just one main character throughout most of the story, who must find her bearings. There is little dialogue but for the recording of Martha's mother, which Martha listens to again and again as the film progresses.
But despite the sparseness, the storytelling feels rich and full, starting with the compelling visuals, which inject both tension and a textured moodiness into the pacing. Thoughtful sound design and a particularly evocative use of music also adds to the drama, giving shape and form to Martha's emotional landscape and the peculiar emptiness of the world.
The film is anchored by a charismatic, compelling performance by actor Shannon Tarbet, who captures both the carefree, confident enjoyment of young adulthood and the increasingly unmoored anxiety of solitude. As she grows more scared, she seems to revert and clings to any reminder of her mother. But when she meets the one other person left on the planet, she discovers something more is going on, and must confront the fact that she must truly leave her family and home behind, both in reality and within.
MARTHA ends with a twist, one that spins the film into existentially profound territory. But while many twists go for shock, this particularly re-skewing of the film's events is executed with more steady sleight-of-hand than surprise. This twist adds a final chord of resonance that unfolds into an ending suffused with tenderness and emotion, as Martha faces the truth of what has happened and lets go of what she once knew to face the unknown. To say more would be to give it away, but it ultimately makes MARTHA into a story that lingers with viewers well after it's over, with feelings of aching, muted sorrow and grief.

When you see that the first time she wakes up, the alarm is similar to the heart moniter beeping and the red balloon was tucked on her bed then her phone was cracked, the mark on her head, the crashed car she sees was her own accident. And she meets that girl standing at the same place as she was standing before the accident. The minute details are amazing.

Both that film and this short film ,like you said, are genius. Everyone worried about curfew and dying and being scared huddled up in the house, meanwhile they’re like “let’s take advantage of this one singular moment that nobody will ever be able to use again, and turn it into awesome art”. Some striking examples of metaphor in dream: the voice Martha keeps listening to is her mum, whose real voice she is hearing repeatedly in her coma state with mum@ bedside, but she can't see her or respond. The vision of Angie keeps popping in her mind; the Toothbrush moment is brilliant- her vision of Angie is competing with her wanting to focus on her mum; she freaks out and tries to push Angie in closet for interrupting her thoughts of her mum, but Angie is only separated from Martha for a second; Martha can't erase her, even though she tried. Actor playing mother deserves recognition for the simple beauty of her performance.

So apparently, Martha actually left the house on that day. On her way while driving, she was checking her phone. While she looked up, she suddenly saw Angie appear out of nowhere and while trying to avoid hitting her, she drove into the tree. The car Martha first saw when she went out after waking up was infact the car she had an accident in. The reason Angie is the only person with Martha is because Angie was the last person Martha saw before being in a coma. At the end, both of them decided to go on a journey. One they would never return. Martha took her last breath and died.

This was really well done. The real story was being told thru tiny details and symbolism so that the audience had a chance to guess it before they reveal that she's in a coma. The red balloon, the wrecked car, broken cell phone, the cut that just appeared and then Angie showing up, etc. It was very beautiful and very sad. The cast and crew did an excellent job telling this story. I look forward to seeing more of their talent. I had some thoughts so, here's what I think regarding some questions in the comments. First the electricity in her mind is still on because that is the life support machine in the real world, it's also why her alarm keeps going off, the beeps were actually from the machine. Second, about the toothbrush that Angie uses that was supposed to belong to Martha's mother; the Angie in her mind only looked like the woman from reality, and she may have been a part of Martha's construct, the part of her that knew what had happened. Either that or she was a guide that took on the appearance of the young lady she almost hit and was there to help her let go. In both scenarios, the toothbrush isn't real, therefore it didn't belong to anyone. It was symbolic of her not being able to let her mother go, and Angie knew it. Which is why Angie used it. It was to force her to accept that her Mother couldn't join her. It seemed that Martha didn't know her in the construct so we have to assume that she did not know her in reality. In that case, she didn't know her name. If Angie was part of Martha's mind, she gave her that name. In the case that Angie may have been a guide or guardian angel, Angie would a derivative of the word Angel. Lastly, when she was leaving 'home' she wasn't just going to another part of the construct, she was leaving the construct to go to the afterlife.

I was in a coma, and obviously I can only speak for myself, it was certainly really crazy. It feels real and I can still remember what they were about. Not all the details but certainly how I felt and what was going on. But while you're dreaming you only have your own mind as a point of reference for what is real. So it probably wouldn't be detailed to an outside viewer because your mind doesn't have to process anything it doesn't need to in order for you to understand what you're experiencing if that makes sense. There's already a lot of science explaining dreams but since everyone is different there's not gonna be any concrete answers, but typically there's certain things that happen that you wouldn't notice while dreaming like, not being able to look at a clock, getting somewhere without actually traveling there, etc. You don't usually notice these while dreaming and when you do it usually wakes you up. It's one of the problems with lucid dreaming, there's a dissonance between the dream world and the real world that once you notice it your body will usually wake you up.

It’s like any of the million possible distractions while driving. You have to have your priorities know your limits. Some drivers can’t drive. Many can’t change a radio station while driving.... I have no problem using cell phone while driving. But now because I have older car/truck I can’t use cell phone while driving. I hit one button “call wife” then push second button, drop ph9ne in shirt pocket. But it’s not legal. In noisy truck I stick phone under shirt on my shoulder. Just because others can’t do anything but drive.

Gawd this was sad. So she killed this girl and herself. The girl she killed rescued her from purgatory. Edit: alternately this was her mind's dying dream created from guilt and regret, and so the girl she thought she may have killed right before she wrecked was conjured into her dreamworld/nightmare. But on some level she made peace with herself and came to terms with her own death. Damn that's pretty sad. Reminds me of Jacob's Ladder.

The films Omleto brings us everyday is more worth than watching full hours movie of the Hollywood . I can’t help but appreciate their hard work and the storyline of these movies are just so perfect and blending with the reality that sometimes you keep on wondering if this is the truth or is it going to be the truth. Coming to this story I had always wondered of how it would be if everyone on the Earth had vanished but their definitely would be a lot more consequences than even thought about. Nuclear power plants could have burst and dams burst open without man power to control however from the perspective of a single woman in one part of the world this was vey interesting. It seems like she was in coma and her subconscious mind was imagining this. Great concept 👍

Yeah as someone who has worked in the electricity industry I could not understand HOW her power was still on - will depend on the system, country - but basically PEOPLE are needed 24/7 - not talking about maintenance, I'm talking about complete cascade failure - of the ENTIRE grid almost *immediately* If people just disappeared, power would literally grind to a halt

@juliaconnell

Oh and dams would NOT burst - not immediately at any rate - most have build in spill ways - some are obvious, others are not - Some forms of generation - like geothermal, coal (urgh) the generation might keep going for a little way - but as i.said last night, at least in my country, the entire national grip would go into cascade failure, requiring black start - a complete & utter blackout almost immediately although the VAST amount of data needed to 'solve' the balance between demand & supply is done with computers - people are still needed in critical positions in real time to keep the electric grid itself running - they're in rooms with high security, boom proof - their building could literally burn to ashes around then and they could still keep working -:plus there are redundancies build into the system - back up sites etc

There's a flip side to this though, there's no guarantee that you'd be the last one to live. Knowing how unfair things are in this universe, it might be someone who wouldn't want to be the last one, while all those who would like to be, would be gone with whatever happened to make everyone go away.

It has been a bit over a year now and she's still in coma and on the ventilator. She's only 28 and has her whole life ahead of her. The family is still holding out hope but there are no signs from the brain. I can't even begin to imagine their pain and feeling of uncertainty. There's probably a less than 10% chance she ever wakes up and even if she does it's unlikely she's be the same as before mentally. Life is cruel and brutal.
