In this video we discuss the topic of slow and mid-tempo double bass. This one is for you if you struggle with controlling your upper and lower legs at tempos up to 140 bpm.
Make sure to follow the full workout video, download the workout clicktrack and guitar pro files here: www.drumtechniqueacademy.net
Just follow this simple ten minute workout and repeat it over and over again.
Also don't forget to first start out practicing that technique on the floor. Once you are able to do that then it's time to also incorporate ankle weights.
And when you got that down it's time to transfer this motion to the pedals.

for the longest time all i ever got from anyone was "just practice youll get better" but youre the only person thats ever gone into this much detail on what muscles to use, or not use, and when to use them. youve helped me so much to correct mistakes ive made for years, and im able to practice longer without pain. im shocked at how quickly im improving because of you. thank you!

I’ve been watching Marthyn’s videos here on KZfaq for a couple years now. Besides the amazing things he has done for the drumming community as a whole , which I have probably thanked him for several times already. I just can’t get enough of his accent! LMAO 😂 it’s like you have your own little personal “Drumming Einstein” to give you tips and reminders as to which muscles you should or shouldn’t be using. I don’t know why, but it still cracks me up every time! Much love from Canada!

I realised after being on and off focus with training the longest time of my life, that I will only use my calves for every tempo. The only thing I change is the motion. On slow tempos till 100 bpm I am using a big ankle motion and the faster it gets the smaller get the motions. I tried every technique there starting with shins and hip flexor. With the hip flexor I started to have serious backpain after some months. I am 6,4 tall so after years of fucking up I realised that the sheer weight of my legs are enough to get a proper beaterswing and on high tempos when I switch to only ankle motion I leave my leg just resting on the pedalboard and raise my heels.

The way I worked on this (heel up like Simon) and I have a long way to go was by playing Blood of Kingu by Vader again and again... it has a faster part that gives you a good break and then its back to the full leg motion. I'm trying to go to flat foot, my left leg just has to do that for some reason so at the moment I'm practicing that on the floor mostly at work. People in the office know what I'm doing but it looks strange all the same ;) Edit: oh yeah moving the seat up a little helped me too.

I had a similar problem a long time ago at a slightly faster tempo (150-165bpm), what I ended up doing was practice the song "Sail into the black" by Machine Head. I skip 4 minutes in and there's a good double bass section of 12 note groupings (164 bpm) that I kept practicing over and over again.

Great video I'll try this tommorow Btw marthyn have you dealt with the issue of not being able to control the pedals when using a e-kit pad? I started using kd10 a month back and I have almost lost my foot control which I had developed on bass drum. Also there was a 5month break where I didn't have access to a drumkit but I was air drumming and tapping feet on the floor every now and then. Thanks!

I have the same problem: With an edrum kit the beater hits back way harder and sometimes even bounces back and creates an additional silent hit that i don't want. It's so hard controlling the beater on a edrum kit. I have a rubber pad for bass drum. I think think it would be easier with a mash head.

When i practice on my pad its running pretty well but on the Real kit im stuck..it feels so umcomfortable big Problem is that nobody can help u through this 😥 i d say that pedal settings and seat are more important

I had this same problem, going from practice pad back to my drum kit. What worked for me was playing on that kit even if it was uncomfortable, spend enough time on it and it will become comfortable. It's literally just a matter of time on the kit.

Hi. I'm Chad. Been watching from day one. I want to say that I know I can't or won't affect your life, but I can say that you have positivity affected mine. You are the most even keel and personality consistent musician/person I've never met. But feel as though I have. I love how you have taken an approach of being the master of your craft. That you are well aware that mastering the craft of double bass drumming with all the new and not so new yet new techniques will be filled with hours of videos that most will feel like not watching or watching completely. Taking nuggets from someone who has been doing this at it's elite level before there was a platform like KZfaq and still doing it while using KZfaq as an extension of your ability to teach. I could have been as good as the best of the best. Fastest of the fast. Technical and precise. I have come close to playing at the level of a pro extreme metal drummer. I just allowed bad decisions and the continued use of bad choices to get in my way over and over. I love the musicality that just the additional kick brings to any type of music. With two all is possible. With one. All is unattainable. It just can not be done. Example: Nobody is going to play let's go with , Becoming, Pantera's Vinnie Paul's masterpiece of footwork in my youths opinion, without two kicks. Not happening. It has never made sense to me that I know drummers that will not even attempt to learn a double bass drum set. I appreciate your time brother. You put in a lot.
