Dude! You posted this video like 4 days after I realized I could probably clean my kicks up if i didnt lean to the side and lose balance when i play. When trying this I can't hold balance without leaning at all if i lift both legs. If i brace myself with my arms its not impossible but its like im lifting a ton of weight with muscles i never used to barely raise both feet at the same time. If i ever reach some goals that give me money ill give you some.

I have the same problem. I cannot lift both of my legs without falling forward. I first thought it might be because me being 6'4". but maybe my muscle is just too weak?

Fantastic video, Marthyn. Question, while playing, where do you feel most of the weight of your body? Does it change between slow and fast tempos? I'm wondering if all playing should come from the core or if some weight distribution is necessary sometimes. Hopefully this question makes some sense? Thank you!

You earned a new subsciber, very usefull and quality informations! I have a question, when playing with pedals i want to have more than 90° angle in the knee because it feels more better,so I put the throne a little bite away from the drums. The issue is that when I play with 2 pedals(bas and hi hat),the toms seems to be away from me and it is hard to hit in the center,or if I do a fast fill on snare and toms it feels strange. What can I do?

From experience I can say; it does. Part of my practice routine consist of full leg motion 8th notes between 120 and 150 for 3-4 Minutes each leg, all while the other leg is raised from the ground. Helped me a lot. Additionally you can practice some rudiments; singles, doubles, paradiddles, paradiddle-diddles with your feet at a slow tempo. Have a set order of rudiments you wanna use and play each one for a minute or two, then without stopping, switch to the next one. Incorporate these things into your practice routine and your Heel-Toe-Game should get much more relaxed!

I have this issue where I get some kind of pain in my right leg exactly in the joint between the hip flexor and hip. It doesn't happen with the left leg just the right. Its kinda hindering my progress and I don't understand where it comes from.

Hi marthyn, how long does it usually take to ”master” double bass drumming? Lets say that you are a less experienced drummer who can play 140bpm 16th notes perfectly. How long should it take to move to 200bpm 16th notes? Thanks

i know you're actually adressing marthyn, but maybe i can help too. i guess it depends on how often and concentrated you're able to practice. dont research so much, practice and try out yourself, what feels good is good usually. but some tips beside. At 180 bpm tempo the motion starts shifting to a different motion from leg to ankles. try to monitor your movement and stay as relaxed as possible most of the time (you can also do some push days). Try to make your movement as clean as possible, accept and embrace the rebound, but try to stay in contact with your pedal all the time. practise at different tempos (more bars at lower, less at high tempos, just as you are able to do). try to increase the duration of what you can do at lower tempos and it will also affect your max speed. put in some rest days (especially if youre stuck), dont lean forward as this puts stress on your knees. If you feel pain, stop for the day and return fresh the other day. if you feel you wont improve, check your motiont and be patient as you will notice your progress over time. you should be able to make 200 bpm in 6-12 months if you really stick to it.

@@ingokolb6871 Well said! I would also recommend placing some mirrors around the drum kit so one can monitor their posture and and general sitting position in real time. If the practice space is too small for putting mirrors around, then recording one's playing with a video camera from the side and front on a regular basis works as well.

Hheawy I already got few mirrors around the kit. They have been helpful and better option than taking videos of yourself playing. With mirrors you can easily watch your playing in real time and not have to watch videos in the middle of practise sessions! Thanks
