I did four years at the University of Manchester studying engineering which cost £24k which I now pay £180 a month out of my pay for the next 25 years to pay it off. So, roughly five years paying for every year at Uni. Now with tuition fees at £9k from £3k an Engineer course would cost £51k with maintenance included....and as they have jacked up the payments to 9% it would cost more per month....and after selling the student loans and allowing retroactive increase in the "interest" or the "money that doesn't go to the loan but is pocketed away" as I call it.......that means you will be paying off your loans forever.... not financial slavery just yet but getting there folks.

You can apply till 31 May 2013 if you are starting in Sep/Oct 2012. Even though, the earlier you apply, the greater is the chance that the university has your fees paid at the beginning of the course. If you apply too late, you have to pay the tuition fees, though up to nine months from the beginning of the course (here comes May 2013) you may reclaim the money you already paid from the English government.

@MeesterWolf99 It'd most likely be even more expensive there, not that I've researched. However I am aware if I went to the Netherlands, I could study for about 1500 pounds a year...that's missing the point though; I wasn't complaining either way, just pointing out that not every British student can afford education after the fee rise, contrary to what the video claims. Besides which, I don't want to go and live somewhere else when England is home.

when we travelled to Barnsley training, we met a large number of African students whom had acquired scholarships for finance degrees. We bonded and started conversations, mainly about the weather.. it was freezing.

@8xNinjax8 Yep they say Holland is a great place to do a MA. I'm struggling in my second undergraduate year as an over 25 independent learner, no parental/family support - doing it all on my own. Student Finance are obviously a lifeline but its a lot of debt to juggle. Competition for places might settle down, but I wonder about how many intellectuals won't enter higher education for monetary reasons - sad times ahead, & you're right... at £9000 a year many see it as far too much debt.

Does this new system also apply to international students? meaning students that come from outside of Britain to study there.

You should contact the student loans company in the UK. I would apply based on being a full time student. But seek advice. Try and contact the British government (embassy) in your country.

I am confused over one aspect of the loan. Do I get to pay 9% of the amount over £21,000. For example, £21,100 would amount to £9 for the student loan company? or £1899?

Regarding the grant, what if you are an EU student (Swedish), from what I've heard I'm not eligible until I become a British citizen. Is this true? What other options are there?
