Appraiser Martin Willis interviews one of the world's leading Leonardo experts, Martin Kemp, who helped authenticate the $450 million Salvator Mundi talks about what it was like behind the scenes exploring the authenticity of the discovery of a lifetime. The world record price of $450 million reflects the hype. This unknown work was purchased by a New York art collector Robert Simon for $10,000 through an auction house somewhere in Louisiana in 2005. The mystery buyer at auction was prince, Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud.

I know exactly what this gaze is: it's admiration. It's the look of someone intensively admiring. Admiration dissolves anything. If you admire something or someone you would look exactly like this. You would sublime anything, illnesses, insanities, sins, anything. Try it.

The hype and controversy surpassed the question whether the painting is by Da vinci or not- everyone is a winner from the two individuals who discovered the painting, the restorer, the historians /art curators and the current owner. I mean there are questions marks whether the mona lisa is the actual mona lisa and whether or not is the wife of the rich merchant.

The interviewer mentioned some oddities in the story of where this work came from. The guy who's estate this work came from in Baton Rouge, Louisiana had a Merovingian name. Clovis, and so did his mother Chlotilde. This probably means nothing, but is so highly improbable and exciting to anyone who is familiar with grail lore that I suspect it is contrived.
@daniyalg2436

Interesting name Clovis. In the early 1900s there was a Clovis gallery in Paris which exhibited a very famous Picasso Blue Period painting. As for The Mundi.. What a shame this Dilapidated panel being $1200 was recreated and fraudulently engineered into $450M for Arabs.

I went to the famed 'LEONARDO' exhibition at the National Gallery in London in 2011 and stood in line for 2 hours. I saw this painting with my own eyes. Everything about it said that this was one of the most exquisite paintings in the world. Everything about it said that this could not have gone unnoticed for centuries. And therefore everything about it said that this was too good to be true. There is no way that this is a Leonardo. It may well have been in the same room as Leonardo, he may well have painted something on that support, but what you are seeing, the painting that is in front of you, is not by Leonardo. At best it is all the embellishment of a very good restorer. At worst it is entirely the restorer's work and was never in the same room as the master. Whatever it is it is not Leonardo.

@@juniorjohnson5961 It's funny... I really want it to be a Leonardo. I'm a huge Leonardo fan and any recovered lost work is a priceless gift to be celebrated. But wishing something to be true doesn't make it true. Of course one can believe whatever one wants, and if it makes you happy, fine. But that is not the position a so-called art expert ought to take. Martin Kemp is just such a romantic. But there's no place for romanticism in factual reality. He has no credibility. I stood in front of that painting in awe. I was utterly exalted. This was absolutely in the innovative style of Leonardo. No one else could have painted this. He was the only person in the word at that time with the knowledge, the patience and the hand for such a masterpiece. It was sublime and knocked the Mona Lisa into a cocked hat... Then the realisation dawned upon me... However, in the modern age, pretty much any two-bit restorer who was being paid handsomely for their patience, would have the knowledge, and the hand. And when you see what it was restored from... even after taking off the dreadful later overpainting... you are left in no doubt that whatever it once looked like it most certainly never looked like it does today. This representation is a creation by a restorer in the style of Leonardo with the sfumato technique executed to perfection. The restorer herself (a restorer of many great masters) said she felt compelled to put this painting back together in the unfettered and unequivocal style of Leonardo. Of course it's convincing as a Leonardo. If it weren't she wouldn't have her job. What we can be sure about is that if Leonardo did paint it, his original painting never looked even remotely like this one. And it is highly questionable whether he painted upon this panel in the first place. Remember the so-called Leonardo expert who set the world on fire with his attribution, is also guilty of attributing the Bella Principessa to Leonardo. The Bella Principessa was painted by Shaun Greenhalgh in his garden shed in Bolton in 1978. He sanded down a piece of vellum to remove the ink script from a 16th century land registry document, but after sanding decided the vellum looked too new, so he did what no artist or document scribe would do... he used the wrong side of the vellum. Martin Kemp put this bizarre move down to Leonardo's genius. Greenhalgh asks the question, so how do you explain the 600 grade sanding marks on the smooth verso side of the vellum that you will find with 100% certainty if you only look? Truth is, Kemp wrote a book about his attribution to Leonardo and it would be highly damaging to his reputation if he were wrong and Greenhalgh were the true creator. So neither he, nor the owner, who also has everything to lose by looking, have advocated further examination. This shows something of the venal character of the 'expert' - he would rather be seen to be revered for his expertise than actually right. For this reason alone, The Salvator Mundi's attribution is not worth the paper it's written on. Although you can buy Martin Kemp's books about his crucial involvement in the 'finding' of not one but two lost masterpieces by Leonardo. They are on sale. He'll sign copies and go on lecture tours to get those books to fly off the shelf and cement his own name in art history for giving the world such gifts. If only they were what he tells you they are. Well they're not.

@@juniorjohnson5961 My pleasure, JJ. Exposing Martin Kemp is a passion of mine so this is a labour of love. Check out the Bella Principessa. It's also a sublime piece of work. No less sublime, I personally believe, given that the subject is not a 'beautiful princess' at all (Kemp's title after his Leonardo attribution) but is actually, as Shaun Greenhalgh says, a 1978 portrait of "Bossy Sally from the Co-op" that he did in his garden shed at the bottom of the garden on his council estate in Bolton, Lancashire. Check out Greenhalgh's other forgeries too - if you've got time watch the documentary "The Artful Codgers" - it is hilarious. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZOmZtZ1vdO2eJ8.html Of course Martin Kemp simply cannot countenance the possibility that he was duped by someone so lowly, someone so far beneath his status. Enjoy.

I have listened to the first 30 minutes and am waiting for Kemp to please explain the lazy right eye. it is not on the same line as the left and seems crosseyed. I find it distracting. so, why would da Vinci have painted this most unusual set of eyes? it looks weird. is da Vinci trying to say something about how we don't need eyes to truly see? all that aside, the rock crystal globe is fascinating.

Martin Kemp engineered this 'Fraud of The Century' Furthermore - Behind the scenes there was an uproar as a result of the attribution controversy. The Mundi was previously proven from the workshop of Leonardo and was attributed wholly to Boltraffio up to 2011. Absolutely NO EVIDENCE they can submit to substantiate or prove it has anything from the hand of Da Vinci: 'AN ABSOLUTE OUTRAGE:' The $alvador Mundi sudden new Attribution. In particular - an academic armchair expert 'Martin Kemp' Oxford and international Museums circuit lecturer whom has influence over several vertically integrated corporations. Kemps blessing enhanced the profile of the suddenly found Mundi. The subsequent Diane Modestini Makeover was an entirely significant factor further to the existing overpainted wrecked panel and painting. SHE DID A RECREATION: She even admits it was already contaminated from previous overpaintings before she even got her hands on it. PLUS In Reality 'Old Masters' private owners especially from the discreet Private Collections are astounded. Lest We Forget there are also unknown Leonardo Da Vinci artworks far far away from the prowling corrupted paws of the influential experts and auctioneers: There are several never been restored 'Old Masters' from origin in the private collections from ownerships of generations. But these owners are now annoyed due to Martin Kemp pushing up their prices up now also increases the security deposit costs and insurance annual premiums. The insurance firms and underwriters have certainly gained traction per the revised momemtum. Incidentally, 'Christies' had literally asked my friends firm to underwrite the $alvador Mundi before the 2017 auction. This was probably because Dmitry Rybolovlev was livid since unravelling he'd been fleeced by Yves Bouvier from the back to back deals via Sothebys personnel. Sothebys knew one day Dmitry would find out hence Bouvier needed parallel leverage. Incidentally Boltraffio had also been attributed to 'Madonna Litta' Hermitage Museum, St. Petersberg (Incidentally this painting is the last sudden found alleged Da Vinci before the discovery of the much dilapidated Mundi in New Orleans, Louisiana (USA). So now the Experts were raging about integrity and were heavily divided which is why the current buyer/s are holding back since the Dmitry Rybolovlev and Yves Bouvier saga runs very deep. Whilst Dmitry still hasn't been paid by 'Christies' due to the fact the payments are held back - he's also been conveniently sanctioned by the banks freezing his assets and locked out from his jetset pals of Monaco Royalty etc. Quite a Coincidence.!!! It's an absolute OUTRAGE scandal of the highest kind in the Art World.

He did not paint like that, never ever full frontal, undefined features regardless of sfumatura not his trait, lack of background not his trait, lack of depth not his trait, composition style not his trait. Then not to mention the restoration; however exquisite it may be it only covers the truth under the guise of preservation. Not a good idea. The only preservation that should be allowed is maintaining the piece in climate control environment and encase it in bulletproof glass case where air has been removed. Bottom line- not a Leonardo…

Worse, it's suffered a horrific restoration by the hands of of an art historian with no artistic eye for detail nor skill as exhibited by know Leonardo works. It's high price paid by Arab Emerits for whom money is no object doesn't prove its authenticity one bit. Nor does a panel of "experts" opinions prove authenticity. Opinions of this variety are routinely purchased. Simply put, even if you could accept this as a genuine Leonardo IT'S A LOUSY one. I'm still laughing at the Arab responsible for losing over 450 million dollars for this joke. Talk about a swindle!
