Jimenez is completely different. He was given a yellow for the foul and then stopped the free kick so got the second yellow. Martinelli was given two straight yellows without a break.

I thought the referee made a correct decision until I read the advantage rule, which reads as follows: Advantage If the referee plays the advantage for an offence for which a caution/sending-off would have been issued had play been stopped, this caution/sending-off must be issued when the ball is next out of play. However, if the offence was denying the opposing team an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, the player is cautioned for unsporting behaviour; if the offence was interfering with or stopping a promising attack, the player is not cautioned. When you read the last part, it seems that he should have stayed on the pitch.

I loved what the ref did. There's a clear yellow to be given, but a great counter-attack is on for Wolves. He doesn't want to stop play and I always love that. Then Martinelli does another CLEAR yellow card offense, thinking he'll get a "free" foul. So he gets two yellows, I don't see anything wrong here.

@Xapa No, yellow cards exist to punish specific actions well outside the accepted parameters. There is nothing in the laws of the game that says you can't get two yellows for different offenses without a stoppage in between them. In fact, it says exactly the opposite, that two different offenses are to be given as two yellows / red even if they occur in close proximity. It was clearly two different incidents and both were clear yellow card offenses, yellow, yellow, red was the textbook call.
@mrkeithmorgan1

I think both yellows are soft, but to give two yellows before you've received one is wrong. You change your behaviour once you've booked
@ErlendFlatin
@ErlendFlatin 2 жыл бұрын
Completely the correct decision. This idea that the ref is supposed to "manage the game" and apply common sense is what leads to the inconsistency we are seeing a lot of. It doesn't matter what teams are playing, what player, or at what time in the game: a bookable offence is still a bookable offence, two bookable offences are still two bookable offences
@ErlendFlatin
@ErlendFlatin 2 жыл бұрын
@@joshc1011 I mean, most your examples are just showing that there is an inconsistency. It's rare that players are booked twice in the same phase of play, because not many players are stupid enough to commit to bookable offences in one go, but I have seen it happen. But it should be double yellow every time. A player that stops a counter attack and then kicks the ball away is grounds for two yellows, but at least here the ref as the option of adding time, so there is an alternative punishment, which is why a ref won't do a double yellow (at least this is consistent, for now..) My point is that players like Bruno, Kane etc. SHOULDN'T get away with constant fouls. If players were always given cards when they commit bookable offences, then there wouldn't be any players that got away with constant fouls. The inconsistency lies in that refs put the bar at different levels, so you'll have games with tons of nasty challenges, and no cards. And you'll have games with fewer challenges, but more cards. And Martinelli got a double yellow because he committed two fouls each worthy of a yellow. Had he already been on a booking the ref would've only needed to show one yellow.
@ErlendFlatin
@ErlendFlatin 2 жыл бұрын
@@joshc1011 Yeah, I think we agree on the principle, but just disagree on the particulars. I didn't follow the entire game, but from what I heard on another Talksport video Arsenal were doing a lot of time wasting. So I think the ref decides to let play go in order to avoid any more time wasting. I also think Martinelli suspected he was going to get booked, and therefore thought he might get another challenge in "for free", usually a player would get away with only one card

So many times nearly in every match actually a player kicks the player with the ball and that player carries on and gets away doesn’t fall and then that same player kicks him again to make sure he takes him down and gets a yellow. The first kick was also a yellow but during that same 3 second phase that player fouled him twice and only gets one yellow when technically that first attempt was a yellow too. Not once did I see a ref give that player two yellows in that phase and has every right to so now if going by the sending off logic against Martinelli as be it 20 second phase or 3 second phase that should not matter.

But he didn't stop the throw being taken. He tried to. Which is against the rules. Therfore the ref sees that wolves still have the ball and plays advantage from the throw he TRIED to block. If he had blocked it he would of gotten a yellow there and then.
@gonnaw1n
@gonnaw1n 2 жыл бұрын
@@lukebailey853 I get that but at the same time the foul for the booking comes from him attempting to stop the throw from being taken..the ball isn't in play at this point, the ref deems it a yellow and says nothing but waves play on so Martinelli believes no foul and then he does what any play on no yellows would do, a professional foul to stop the play...he wouldn't of done this had he known the first was a yellow...no player would have done that...therefor the Ref deceived the player and not only Wolves gaining advantage they also gained a player advantage. I'm sorry but there is no right here from the ref and I believe when a ref plays advantage but is going to card he should inform the player at the same time, it is a hole in the rules. @@gonnaw1n I know there are grey areas but I would counter your points with 1) The ref didn't wave play on (Play on means no foul was committed) he waved advantage. 2) Its very rare that a ref has time to tell a player he's going to be booked whilst at the same time playing advantage. It’s interesting when you all talk about the rule when it comes to Arsenal. But when it comes to multiple incidents against Arsenal, the referee turns a blind eye and you guys just shrug it aside. A clear example is when Saka was clearly kick and the ref allowed play to continue. Talking about going by the rules, if you say that, then it has to always be that way. You can’t cherry pick.

@olasmemoir 2 жыл бұрын
@@Gagefelstead and I agree with your point. As long as we can agree that there will always be inconsistencies, then we should throw out the point of going by the letter of the ‘law’. Yes, I don’t watch as much games of other teams but when inconsistencies are becoming largely skewed, then we should learn to review our approach. I don’t want to believe that no footballer has not done what Martinelli did in the last 15 years. Are we saying that of all the players, it was just that only he got penalized? Secondly, this is not speaking of only Arsenal, referees do make decisions based on player’s reputation at times. That’s why a player would get sent off for an offense and another player wouldn’t even get a yellow card. I fear that because this is unchecked, it’s beginning to extend to team level where they factor team reputations in making decisions. No matter the team, decisions should be made applying the rule to the context of the situation. It was obvious that Oliver was pissed and wanted to exert his authority which he should. However, I don’t believe it was the correct call.

So from now if a player makes two foul in one action (advantage rule) we should extract a red card..... refs are so poor everywhere (in Italy are the same).

Depends on the foul, one was an arm across to stop a throw in (blatant yellow) and the other stopped a counter (blatant yellow). If it was debatable yellows or something it would make sense

@@xyzblue4563 I think there is an argument to be made that Martinelli may not commit the second foul if he knew he was getting a yellow for the first. Stupid either way but if ref books him immediately for the first, there may be more caution thereafter. No way to predict though.

@@STROA13 Martinelli should have known he was getting a yellow card when he pushed Podence trying to throw the ball back in play. The referee did the right thing by allowing an advantage than at the next dead ball to caution Martinelli. When Martinelli carelessly takes out Semedo with no attempt to win the ball. That is a double yellow. Playing stupid games gives you stupid prizes. The referee made the right decision being 100% unbiased. Martinelli was a lot quicker than Semedo. If Martinelli got in front of Somdeo and won the ball back, the second yellow would not have happened. Stoping an obvious counterattack was stupid by Martinelli.

Raul Jimenez committed his second offence after being booked. Martinelli committed his second offence before getting any cards at all. We see so many times when a player already booked is given a second chance when he commits a certain second yellow.

@@dellboy1775 You aren't understanding the system. It isn't there to give a warning of hey, you screw up and you're gone, it's there to punish incidents that occur. Everyone that sets foot on the pitch should know the rules and what constitutes a sending off offense or a bookable offense. you're allowed one, but not two, bookable offenses as long as the ref does his job and books every bookable offense. In this case the player committed two bookable offenses without waiting to see if the ref was letting him get away with one, the ref properly didn't, and he is gone as per the laws of the game.

@@brianbates212 i fully understand I'm just not looking at it from a simplistic view of 2 fouls in the same phase of play means a red.. there are countless games where players have been booked and committed a foul after wards and the ref would give them a final warning in this instance the player wasn't given any warning also if you wanted to dig deeper into it the first foul was on a throw in the ball isn't in play so how can you play advantage are we playing advantage on goal kicks corners and freekicks now because I've never seen that the game gets stopped the card is issued and you replay it. The fact that an ex referee who was in charge of training referees came out and said it was a poor decision should indicate to you that it was a bad decision

jimenez knew he was already booked martinelli didnt know he was booked why didnt wolves get 2 free kicks?? isnt that the rules? If the referee plays the advantage for an offence for which a caution/sending-off would have been issued had play been stopped, this caution/sending-off must be issued when the ball is next out of play. However, if the offence was denying the opposing team an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, the player is cautioned for unsporting behaviour; if the offence was interfering with or stopping a promising attack, the player is not cautioned.

If traffic lights go from green to red, will you have time to stop your car? Similarly, if you don't know you're on a yellow, as not every player gets booked if advantage is played, how can you expect players to adjust their behaviour so they don't end up with a red?

I thought it was unfair because Martinelli is never informed there's a foul, the referee never motioned for advantage and never stopped the game. Martinelli wouldn't have gone in for the foul if he knew he was, or even could be, on a yellow already.

As for the Wolves fan comparing it to Jimenez, does he not realise he was actually booked and then got himself a second yellow…. Martinelli hadn’t even been booked ffs

For those saying that stopping a throw in is a yellow card...that is correct. In fact the rules state that stopping the restart of play is a yellow card. So every time a freekick or throw in is delayed by an opposition player a yellow card should be issued. The big problem is that this isn't the case and varies in application game by game, team by team, player by player and ref by ref. The time on the clock is a factor too. None of this is stated in the rules whereby discretion or interpretation is considered. If Harry Kane or Ronaldo did the same as Martinelli they wouldn't have been sent off. If you watch enough of the Prem games you'll know this to be true.

It cannot be a red card for the simple fact there was no advantage. The ball was out of play. He attempted to delay play by delaying a throwing. A bookable offence - yes. However, as the ball is still in the wolves players hands, it means that the game isn’t in actual play hence no advantage. Ref should have gave a yellow there and then.
