If you're working for minimum wage then you're not good at anything or you're a student supporting your grant. You're not an elite athlete for a start. To get to be a footballer, you need to be at it from the age of 8 and all the pressure that goes with it. My lad is in the system at 16, trust me he's worked his nuts off even to get a scholar. And by the way only the very best get close to the very top level.

This is the same issue Wenger, Alex Ferguson, Jose all stated back in the 90s and early 00s. Nothing has changed, the same amount of games are still played. If anything, you have bigger squads now, compared to back then. Also the pitches are a lot better now, sports science is better, diets, injury recovery. They didn't have that back in the 90s, when players like Owen, Keane and Shearer had really bad injuries. Look at the brazilian Ronaldo, he had a very bad injury, he still played on the dodgy pitches and when players would lunge in and tackle hard. What dd he think it was like in the 80s, 70s, 60s etc, These players today have it way more easier, I have no idea wht Van Dijk is talking about Family. He was out injured for nearly 10 Months, I reckon he spent loads of time at home. What does he think the normal every day person does when they work, they spend all day away from their family also. They are busting a gut just to live and provide a roof over their heads. Van Dijk will be retired in his late 30s, never having to work again. He can spend loads of time with his family, I think he is taking the p**s to be fair.

Absolutely moronic comparison to make. It's a strange trait of the British to hear that someone might have it bad and their response is to immediately make it about themselves with a "you think you have it bad, I bluddy av ter geddup at six!". Nobody cares about your apprenticeship, it has absolutely no relevance to muscle fatigue in footballers. You're assuming this is psychological issue for footballers, like they just can't be bothered playing 2-3 games a week all season. It isn't - it's a physical issue. It doesn't matter how much they are getting paid, there comes a point where your body burns out.

@garypipe1770
@garypipe1770 Жыл бұрын
Simon said one thing perfectly. You can highlight a problem all you want but unless you provide a solution to that problem your going nowhere. The solutions I think of are the following: 1. Get rid of International friendlies i.e Home Nations, friendly matches. Anything that's not either qualifucation to a big tournament or the tournament itself. This will reduce the games top players play and also allow the domestic leagues to spread their games out more. Downside is the money side of the game where whoever benefits from these friendlies will be affected. 2. A forced limit how many games a player can play domestically i.e each player is only allowed to play 30 games each season for a club. This will provide the neccessary breaks but the players, managers, clubs and sponsors will hate this. The benefit would be that it would force managers to use the full squad and maybe younger players will get chances to showcase themselves. These are the only solutions I can think of. Neither is ideal but if it is a big enough issue then the solution must be equally big enough to solve it.

Seems to me that the obvious solution would be to scrap international friendlies and tournaments like the Nations League and just play the tournaments Euros(or the equivalents for other continents), the World Cup. Every international break takes away 2 mid-week fixture dates and 1 weekend fixture date and we usually have 4-5 of the them in a season so I think that is where one can find the extra time that the players are supposedly asking for. You could reserve 4 weeks for a holiday, 4 for a pre-season, 6 weeks for a tournament (or to play qualifiers for the tournament) and leave the rest for the club season. You'd have 38 weeks left so assuming 1 weekend fixture and 1 mid-week fixture, you have 76 possible dates to accommodate 66 fixtures so you have the room in the calendar to fit in a mid-season break. Also, because there are no international breaks during the club season, you can play twice in 8 days instead of thrice in 9 days and get more of a break, while also playing fewer matches overall because there are no international friendlies. I'm not an expert on the financial and logistical details of fixture scheduling but looks like the only way to have fewer matches is to cut down on the international fixtures because the finances of club football make it impossible to cut down fixtures.

You can’t have it both ways. Footballers can actually play a game every day. It’s just that the quality would be really lacking and there would be far more injuries. The few footballers who in theory average a game a week over the course of 12 months don't actually play that many matches as they are rested as and when necessary throughout the season. Even guys like De Bruyne and Haaland have been rotated a bunch of times this season. The reality is there are 38 league games and then maybe a handful of important cup games at the tail end of the season, after which they get a complete break for a month or so. I don't think the demands on modern players are quite as punishing as Martin suggests.

Simply put if anyone csn do it everyone should be doing it. I’ve tested athletes their numbers are insane. Everyone thinks they can be a footballer. Don’t kid yourself, the pace, stamina and strength required for the sport is ridiculous and would see most people pick up an injury within a month that ruled them out for the rest of the season. Their durability is insane. For example most people think they can play in the nba till they have to play for 15 minutes then realise these guys are pure athletes, even something like f1, the corners the turn and the amount of g force produced would snap the average persons neck. They’re paid insane because they’ve been dedicated and honed their craft to insane figures.

The solution is play to get paid in their contracts. Add clauses for injuries, sickness, family emergencies, compassionate leave etc. But if someone is in the line up, on the bench, or at least prepared for 50 games, pay that player. If a player is burnt out, needs rest, wants load management or anything like that then a percentage comes out their wage. Imo it's a decent compromise.
@vincentkariuki4227
@vincentkariuki4227 Жыл бұрын
That doesn't work because for ons reason or another a player might get benched or left out of the match day squad or sent to practice with the under21 team,the player will they claim their is some kind of collusion btwn upper management and the coach to void his guarantees cos he didn't meet those markers that mightve nothing to do with his play...sounds like lawsuits waiting to happen The way it works best is through insentivising via the bonuses in the contract not pay cuts...ie if you play 90% of the game there is an extra amount you get...if we win the champions league you get an extra amount but you must've played all through the knockout stages
@Jsquadgamers
@Jsquadgamers Жыл бұрын
I hear what your saying, but that's why I said if a player is at least prepared to play that should be fine. Clauses in contracts can address a lot of what you said aswell. I'll give you an example, I'm a West Ham fan (god help me) we paid 50 million for Andy Carrol who averaged 18 games for us over 6 seasons and got paid 90k a week. 🤨. Paying 90k a week for a player who in the end needed ankle surgery and was out 80% of the 18/19 season never sat well with me. Pay in conciliation to availability in these cases should be put into contracts - Carroll should've had a percentage deducted from his wage simply because he wasn't there to do his job, say 40%. He'd still be earning 36k a week to sit on the couch! In total contrast to my job, if I'm injured or I'm sick, I have an allocated amount of sick pay but once that's over I'm not getting paid anything 😂. Some of these players are being paid a fortune, I think it's fair to be at least available to play in order to be entitled for full pay.

They should just add a cap on the number of games a player is allowed to play per season and force teams to use the squad + youth players No player can play more than 50 competitive games in total in a season (inclusive of all cups) All registered players must start at least 15 competitive club fixtures in a season unless they cannot due to injury If they don't have the first team players available then bring in youth players. No players can be called up for international duty if they have missed any club fixtures due to injury in the last 30 days. No player can play more than 3 international fixtures in a row No more long haul flights for pre season, mid season or end of season friendlies, as travel will no doubt take its toll eventually too. The issue is that clubs and players really don't actually care about playing too many games, they want as much revenue as possible and use burnout as an excuse when things don't go their way.

Basically, he uses it to fit his narrative. You either happy with amount money in the football or not. They are simply doing their job as anybody else in this world. I haven't been a listener for that long but my gauge is that Simon is a ultra capitalist above all else....maximising profit and minimising cost,I think whats hard for him to swallow with today's football economics is players are earning as much as VC of hedge funds and CEOs when for most of those teams there isn't an added value to having those players on enormous wages...with how the epl works,as long as you're average you are guaranteed over 110mil per season...I thinks he needs to change his mindset on where he sees the players in the football food chain...Good to great players are their own economies in a way...not saying they are bigger than the clubs and their supporters but if you are that player who's great and is global there is no way you are going to cap their earning potential or hold down their salaries just cos you think it's alot....for example over the last decade it didn't matter who was playing alongside Messi people both away and home matches went to see him play,they were selling out stadiums which led to a famous production company to curate a show centered around messi(they did that for global musical acts),people were going to watch shows based on the greatness of a football player so you can't tell me with that much attention that equates to dollar amounts that certain players aren't worthy of the money they are getting despite is being enormous to the common man...most of the great players aren't workers they do partnerships with their teams....for instance when PSG got neymar for 200m,do you think they were only interested in his footballing exploits or did they see him as an opportunity and their way into the Latin Market cos of who he is outside of playing football

I get they are paid ridiculously and dont make the sacrifices we do, but ultimately its in every fans interest for the best players to be fit and performing. We pay to watch the best players play their best football, and the schedule is hindering that. It's also misleading to say its 52 games over a year. It isnt a game a week over in 9/10 months, but often 2, and recovery is important. Biology doesn't care about your bank balance, so their wages are irrelevant. Only thing I will say in Keowns defence is that everyone keeps harping on about what they’re paid, but no amount of money can buy away fatigue, muscle ache, joint ache. Which then hinders top players from performing, criticism then gets given by the fans saying you’re paid to be perform at this level, so players therefore want to prove themselves so play as much as possible etc. Vicious cycle, their bank accounts don’t make the physical demand any easier, they’re bodies are human just like everyone else’s. However I agree that it’s the players choice to play the 50-60 games a season, could easily ask for a rest every now n then, wouldn’t affect the fans or clubs opinion of them
